CLEVELAND, Ga. – A familiar face will take the reins as superintendent of White County Schools in July.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Laurie Burkett, who has spent nearly all of her 28 years in education in the White County School System, has been named as finalist for the superintendent position. State law requires the school board wait 14 days before voting on the new superintendent.

In addition to her responsibilities as assistant superintendent, Burkett currently serves as Director of Human Resources.

Burkett started her career in 1990 at White County High School (WCHS) as a math teacher and varsity girls’ basketball coach. Serving in various roles including athletic director, assistant principal and head basketball coach for the Lady Warriors. She remained at WCHS until 2007 when she returned to teach and coach at her alma mater, Johnson High School in Gainesville.

Burkett is a member of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL), North East Georgia P-20 Collaborative, and Georgia Professional Standards Commission Personnel Task Force. She is an active member of the White County community where she serves on several boards including Family Connections and Backpack Buddies. She has also served on the White County Chamber of Commerce Board and enjoys coaching recreational basketball.

Burkett will replace Dr. Jeffrey Wilson who was named as superintendent of the Floyd School System last month. Wilson’s resignation becomes effective June 30.
