Trump, Isakson, and Echols Win in Lumpkin

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — There were no individual county elections on the ballot in Lumpkin County Tuesday but that didn’t keep voters from turning out in large numbers to cast their vote for President of the United States.

About 80.4 percent of the 15,618 registered voters, voted either by mail-in ballot, or during the advanced voting period or on Election Day Tuesday.

Lumpkin County voters gave 9,613 votes to Republican billionaire Donald Trump and 2,216 votes to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. While Trump’s resounding victory in winning the White House may have come as a surprise to the pollsters and pundits, his margin of victory in this Republican stronghold was not at all surprising.

Meanwhile another Republican, U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson rolled up a convincing victory over his Democrat challenger Jim Barksdale, 9,189 to 1,953.
District 2 Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols won here, 9,415 to 2,133.

There were four amendments on the ballot to attract voters. Amendment 1, which essentially would have allowed a state board of education to take control of local schools it deems “failed,” was defeated 7,971 to 4,304 but the others passed overwhelmingly.

Amendment 2, which provides penalties for sexual exploitation and an assessment on adult entertainment, passed by a margin of 9,846 to 2,274. Amendment 3,which establishes a Judicial Qualifying Commission, was approved 6,892 to 4,512 and Amendment 4, which takes revenue from existing taxes on fireworks to pay for trauma care, fire services and public safety, passed 9,526 to 2,492.
