Snowfall Less Than Expected in Lumpkin Co.

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Lumpkin County EMS Director David Wimpy reports that the county dodged a bullet last night regarding the weather.

A warm layer of air from the Gulf of Mexico kept precipitation liquid longer than expected resulting in less snow accumulation. Lumpkin County averaged about 2.5 inches with higher amounts in some locations.

While the precipitation has all but ended, we will see a flurry or two for the next few hours. Temperatures are not expected to get above 32 today so we may have some travel issues, especially on secondary roads. Primary roads seem to be in good shape, but hazardous to travel.

Now, it gets very cold. We were at 29 degrees at 3 a.m., which is the high for today. We drop to 12 tonight with a wind chill of -2. Sunday night, the temperature will be 16 and up to 36 on Monday.

Any snow or melting snow will certainly refreeze and could cause black ice.
