Dillard James Armstrong: Obituary

Dillard James Armstrong, age 73 of Dahlonega, Georgia went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hall County, Georgia on July 8, 1944, he was the son of the late Dillard and Kate Armstrong. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Annelle Armstrong, brother Dennis Reeves and father in law Alvin Self.  Mr. Armstrong attended Lumpkin County High School and was self-employed as a masonry contractor for over 40 years, leaving his mark on many homes and business throughout Northeast Georgia.

James devoted many years to the youth of Lumpkin County as a volunteer coach in the baseball programs. He also supported his sons, nieces, nephews and granddaughter in a variety of sporting events all over the country.  He also spent many hours watching NASCAR with his family. Mr. Armstrong was a member of The Torch-Dahlonega and volunteered with the There’s Hope for the Hungry program.  He was avid gardener and took pride in the variety of flowers in his yard.   James could be found most Wednesday and Saturday mornings eating breakfast with his brothers at local restaurants, inspiring many with their close bond and love for each other.

Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue Armstrong of Dahlonega, his son David Armstrong of Dahlonega, son and daughter in law Neil and Jill Armstrong of Blue Ridge, daughter Missy Norrell of Dahlonega, his granddaughter Neilie Jace Armstrong of Blue Ridge, and mother in law Faye Self of Dahlonega. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters in law Henry and Claudine Armstrong, Frank and Barbra Armstrong, and Larry and Lynn Armstrong all of Dahlonega, sister in law Mary Ruth Reeves, mother in law, Faye Self, brothers in law and sisters in law, Bobby and Deborah Self, Gina and Terry Fields, Phillip and Gaylena Self and Michael and Julie Self all of Dahlonega. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family members as well.

Funeral services will be held at Dahlonega Funeral Home, Friday May 18th at 1:00 pm.  Visitation will be on Thursday, May 17th 2-4 and 6-8 pm, and on Friday, May 18th 10-12 pm.  Rev. David Masters and Rev. Quentin Self will officiate.
