Indians Perform Well In Macon

The Indians made the trip to Macon Georgia last weekend for the GHSA State Duals tournament in the 3A classification.  Having a fairly young team, Coach Brian Matthews had his team ready to compete.

Thursday saw the Indians take the mats against a very good Pierce Co. team in the first round.  In a tough fought battle, Lumpkin came out with the victory and moved forward for a second round bought with Sonoraville.  Coming in with a first-round bye, the Pheonix gave the Indians their first defeat of the tournament to push them in the consolation rounds.

Having to fight through more tough teams the Lumpkin wrestlers took the mats against Pike Co. and Cook Co.  The Pike matches had the Indians come out with the must-have win over an area champion to keep their hopes alive of continuing the journey.   In the last competition for Friday, yet another area champion in the Cook County Hornets.  Once again the Indians mixture of new and seasoned athletes came through for yet another win and proof that they belonged in Macon.  The Indians would fall to Jackson County on Saturday to end the trip.  Overall the Indians of Lumpkin went 3 and 2 on the weekend and finished in the top 6 in the state.  Sonoraville and Jackson Co. continued through the bracket to finish third and fourth respectively in the State tournament.  Congratulations to the Indians on a great run in duals and the best of luck as they turn their focus to the traditional state coming up in early February.
