Lumpkin County inmate hangs himself

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – On Thursday, June 25, at approximately 10:45 a.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to investigate an inmate death by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. The initial information was at approximately 10:38 a.m., Lumpkin County inmate Randall Thomas Hanley, 38, of Dahlonega, was found hanging in his jail cell. Lumpkin County officers performed lifesaving measures and ultimately EMS transported Hanley to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:00 p.m.

Hanley was in custody for several charges related to a domestic violence incident. Hanley was denied bond on these charges on June 18, 2020 and his case was pending trial.

The GBI is conducting an independent investigation that is currently ongoing. Preliminary investigation indicates that Hanley died from self-inflicted hanging. The autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the GBI Crime Lab.
