Mr. George Cameron Thompson passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020. George was 78 years old.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 24 at the Dahlonega Funeral Home from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
A celebration service will be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 2:00pm at the Dahlonega Funeral Home.
George was born in Dahlonega, GA on April 15, 1941 to Wesley David and Susie Brookshire Thompson. He attended Lumpkin County schools in Dahlonega, Georgia. George worked for General Motors in Doraville, Georgia for 13 years. In 1980, George started working for Farm Bureau in Dahlonega, GA. When he retired in 2006, George’s office had a book of business that exceeded $6 million.
George is preceded in death by his brothers Ollie, David and Charles Thompson and his sisters Leila Stowers, Yvonne Patton, Ann Phillips, Marion Hogwood, and Billie Woodall. Nephew and Nieces: Max Woodall, Beverly Phillips Wimpy, Tammy Phillips Martin, and Debbie Woodall Casey.
George is survived by his wife Peggy Thompson and his children Janssen Thompson and his wife Becky of Houston, TX and Vivian Street of Nashville, TN and Drew Bardenwerper and his wife Leigh of Tuscaloosa, AL and Danielle Witherington and her husband Will of Lexington, KY. George is also survived by his grandchildren Jeffery Street and his wife Shannon of Boise, ID; Kyle Street of Boise, ID; Sarah, Laura, Caroline and Andrew Witherington of Lexington, KY; Scott and Ryan Bardenwerper of Tuscaloosa, AL; Ashley Justice of Galveston, TX and Sarah Paul Thompson of Edwall, WA. George was the proud great-grandfather of George Huckleberry “Huck” Street of Boise, ID. He leaves behind a host of family and friends including nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins. He has created many memories with us all that we will treasure and remember.

Dr. John Earl Raber: Obituary

On Thursday, February 20, 2020, Dr. John Earl Raber went home to be with the Lord. Dr. Raber was born in Altoona, PA on September 13, 1938 to the late George Dewey and Agnes E. Little Raber. He is preceded in death by all of his siblings consisting of four sisters and two brothers.
Dr. Raber’s life has made an impact on this earth that has been felt far and near. He graduated from Bucknell University and Lock Haven University then went on to the University of Georgia where he received his doctorate. From there his passion for high school wrestling flourished. Dr. Raber coached young men in high school and on the collegiate level. He moved to Dahlonega, GA in the summer of 1971 and along with his precious family he brought his love for wrestling. Dr. Raber played a direct role in establishing the Lumpkin County High School wrestling program. He established and directed Dr. John’s Wrestling Camps that were hosted all over north Georgia. Dr. Raber was a head wrestling official for the GHSA, NCAA, ACC, and SEC collegiate wrestling. He recently accepted the distinguished honor as an inductee to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Dr. Raber fell in love with Dahlonega, GA. He taught Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of North Georgia. Dr. Raber retired after 23 years of educating and coaching at the college level. Even though he was retired he never felt detached from the college he loved. Dr. Raber continued to show the community he loved leadership and compassion. He served on the Dahlonega City Council, two terms as Mayor, as a Lumpkin County Commissioner, and Lumpkin County Commission Chair, and as the Director of the Regional Development Council with the State of Georgia. Dr. Raber along with many other great men established the Cooper-Green Prayer Group that still meets faithfully every Tuesday morning to pray for the needs in the community.
Along with all the compassion that Dr. Raber had he was also determined to show kindness in any way he could. One way that he did this was with his “bread and sweet route”. Dr. Raber picked up and delivered sweets and bread to various places dear to his heart such as the Rainbow Children’s Home, the Dahlonega Homeless Shelter, the Community Helping Place, and the NOA Women’s Shelter.
Survivors include his daughter Daina Raber, El Cajon, CA; sons and daughters-in-law Gregory and Lisa Raber, Dahlonega, Brian and Lynn Raber, Greenville, S.C., and Michael and Laura Raber, Dahlonega; grandchildren Easton Bajsec (Scott), Tate Justus, Jordan Moore (Jeremy), Keaton Raber, Caitlyn Raber, Lucas Raber, Daniel Wiggley (Jennifer), and Jessica Roberts (Brad); nine great-grandchildren; and his fiancé Juanita Tipton, Dahlonega.
Dr. Raber’s wishes were to be cremated and rather than having a single service to remember him by his wishes were that he be remembered every time a wrestling mat is pounded, and every time a kind deed is done in the town that he loved, Dahlonega, GA.

Donna Ann Thompson: Obituary

Mrs. Donna Ann Thompson, age 67, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, February 16, 2020.
Donna was born in Lumpkin County on December 15, 1952 to the late Robert Edward Conner and Frances Lorene Brookshire Conner. Loving life and laughing much was what she enjoyed. Donna also enjoyed a stroll through the outdoors. She was an amazing cook and she loved to feed her family. Donna was creative and she used her talent to paint. She also made clothes for her boys when they were children. They will forever remember her Halloween Costumes that she custom made for them. Donna was a loving mother, sister, and friend.
Donna worked as a legal secretary for many years. Deep in her heart, Donna harbored an abiding faith in the Lord Jesus. Her generous and kind spirit will be missed by her relatives and friends.
Survivors include her sons Forrest Thompson, Lawrenceville, and David Thompson, Marietta; brothers and sisters-in-law Trent and Linda Conner, Dahlonega, and Ken and Joy Conner, Hayesville, NC, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until the service hour Sunday at the funeral home.

Martha Frances French: Obituary
Obituaries February 15, 2020
Frances French was born on March 22, 1941, in Eclectic, Alabama, and passed away peacefully on February 10, 2020. She was the youngest child of the late Jason and Lucille Johnson. Frances lived in Eclectic until her meeting of and marriage to the love of her life, Harry French. In May of 1962, the newly married couple embarked upon a journey that would last fifty-eight years. During this time they welcomed two children, Shannon and Mark, into the world. They moved 17 times in twenty-three years of marriage. In the summer of 1978, they moved to Dahlonega. Out of all the places they had lived, it was Dahlonega they chose to call home.
Frances was an active member of Dahlonega Baptist Church, where she served for nearly 40 years, until her declining health would no longer allow her to do so. Frances enjoyed nearly every craft imaginable and treasured spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Harry, son Mark, daughter Shannon French (Russ) Perkins, and grandchildren Sophia Perkins, Sam Perkins, Annabelle Perkins, sister Daisy Adams and countless friends.
By those who knew her, she will be remembered as a faithful follower of Christ, devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, loyal friend and an amazing woman.
Visitation will be held on Thursday February 13th, 2020 from 4pm -8pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday February 14th, 2020 at Dahlonega Baptist Church at 11am.

Charles H. Blackwell: Obituary

Mr. Charles H. Blackwell, 92 of Dawsonville passed away on February 11, 2020 following an extended illness.
Mr. Blackwell is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Coleman and Ada Odessa Blackwell. His sons Jimmy W. Blackwell, Tim A. Blackwell (wife Sherry Blackwell).
He is survived by his wife Annette Blackwell, son Edward M. Blackwell (wife Karlye Blackwell),
son Christopher Charles Blackwell (wife Nichole Blackwell). Grandchildren (in order)
Heidi Blackwell, Brett Blackwell, Dana Blackwell, Christina Standridge, and Bridget Blackwell.
Great Grandchildren (in order) Arya, Owen, and Jade Standridge.
He is a retired bulldozer operator, he loved studying the bible, watching preaching. He loved his family, his babies, cars and working.
Family will receive friends on Saturday February 15, 2020 from 4-7 pm at the funeral home.
Graveside service will be held on Sunday February 16, 2020 at 2pm. Besthesda Church Cemetery in Ballground, GA.

(Coach) William (Bill) Ensley, Sr: Obituary

(Coach) William (Bill) Ensley, Sr. of Dahlonega, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2020. Bill was born on March 28, 1935, to Eugene and Ramie Childers Ensley in Chatsworth, GA.
Bill Ensley attended Murray County High School and earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Georgia, where he played for four years and set rebounding records. Bill Ensley became Coach Ensley at Jefferson High School and Hart County High School. While at Hart County High School, he won three state championships, being the only coach in GA history to win both a girls’ and boys’ state championship on the same night in 1963. In 1971, Coach Ensley restarted the basketball program at North GA College in Dahlonega, GA, where he never had a losing season. He served as Director of Athletics for twenty-four years, serving as head basketball coach for eighteen years. Coach Ensley led the Saints to the district playoffs eleven times, capturing district titles in 1983 and 1984. Coach Ensley was named Atlanta Tip-Off Club Coach of the Year in 1976. In 1994, Coach Ensley was named to the NAIA Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the NAIA’s Athletic Administrator of the Year in 1991.
Mr. Ensley is preceded in death by his son, William (Chip) E. Ensley Jr. and he is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Jeanette Gregory Ensley, brothers and sister-in-law, Arvil and Barbara Ensley of Roopville, GA and Gary Ensley of Kansas City, KS, daughters and son-in-law, Cary Moore of Murrayville and Leanne Ensley Condon and Tony Condon of Arlington, WA, grandchildren, Erika and Wykeman Moore, and Lauren Turner and Cara Condon, great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Langley and Gabriel Gonzalez.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 1:00 at Dahlonega Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega, GA. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 14, 2020 from 4:00-8:00 at Dahlonega Funeral Home.
