Marshall Jackson, 84 of Dahlonega, GA. Passed away May 28, at 4:25pm, with his wife, son, daughter, son in law, grandson, Shihtzu, and kitty by his side. He had suffered for 5 years with Parkinson’s disease and complications from radiation for prostate cancer.

Marshall was born in West Palm Beach, FL on March 4, 1934, the son of Wesley Benjamin Jackson and Nellie Clark Jackson. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald Jackson, and by his dearest friends Roy Sanders, David Wolcott, Larry Christensen, Bob and Virginia Pickelseimer, and John Stockard. He is survived by his wife, Jenni, son Dan (Donna) Jackson of Dahlonega, his daughter Kelley (Harry) Henderson of Lumpkin County, sister Margie (Bill) Funk of Fl., sister Mert (Eddie) Hall of Fl., sister Crystal (Brent) Wenkstern of Fl., as well as grandchildren Shawn Fink, Melonie (Matt) Stanton, Dani Carter, Jasmine (Jerry) Young, Jordan Jackson, Jack Jackson, Cody Jackson, great grandchildren Levi Carter, Wesley Marshall Stanton, and Ellie Stanton, a host of nieces and nephews, and a huge extended family in Vermont.

Marshall enjoyed growing up in West Palm Beach, his young years being a time when the area was peaceful, and uncrowded. He spent many days in the swamp with his friends, the Swamp Demons, hunting and trying to find Nyoka, the swamp ghost. He was flying his airplane almost before he could ride a bicycle. He enjoyed fishing, sailing, diving, camping, The Florida Keys, Everglades National Park and the beach. He was an avid catamaran sailor, and served as Commodore of Hobie Cat Fleet 34 in Palm Beach County. His love of critters lasted all his life until his last breathe.

Marshall attended the University of Florida, worked as a commercial pilot, then for many years as an aerospace design engineer at Pratt-Whitney Aircraft until his retirement in 1994. His brilliant mind led him to be a member of Mensa. He spent many happy hours solving mechanical problems at Commercial Pictures, a professional photography studio owned by his friend, Roy Sanders in West Palm Beach. Many of those sessions he called “a two and two”-two cigars and two bottles of Mateus. He could anything that needed fixing. If he didn’t have a tool to fix something, he would make a tool to do the job. He proudly passed that on to his son Dan.

It seems that WINGS were always a part of Marshall’s life, from flying airplanes, to working in avionics to building and flying remote control airplanes. After his retirement, Marshall and Jenni raised exotic birds in Loxahatchee, Fl. Where he also enjoyed chickens, turkeys, swans, and peacocks-all of them peacocks of course. For the past 3 ½ years being confined to his bed, he spent his days watching the many dozens of birds feeding on the back deck. He got his own wings on Memorial Day.

There will be no services in Dahlonega, following his cremation by Dahlonega Funeral Home, his ashes will be spread as he wished-from a burlap bag into the Palm Beach inlet in the out-going tide.

In his memory, please adopt a rescue pet. Enjoy every sunrise. Think of him when you hear an airplane flying overhead. Live each day with a sense of humor. Tell your family and friends how much they mean to you. Hold tight to the ones you love, and treasure every moment you have with them.

Mrs. Bonnie Lee Holloway, age 85, of Suches passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018.

Mrs. Holloway was born in Anderson, SC on July 31, 1932 to the late Axel and Minnie Jones Olson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Russell Holloway and daughter Kristel Holloway.  Bonnie loved to dance and play music, especially her banjo. She was employed as a cook at Dipper Dan’s, TWO, and Union County High School.  Bonnie was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches, GA.

Survivors include her sisters Jean Tritt, Mineral Bluff; Barbara Watts, Dalton; brother Wayne Olson, Suches; grandson Tyler Holloway; and granddaughter Destiney Holloway, both of Suches.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, June 1, 2018 in the chapel of Banister Funeral Home. Dr. Don Pruitt and the Rev. Fred Whitley will officiate.  Interment will follow in Zion Baptist Church in Suches, GA. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Douglas Goode, age 76, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, May 21, 2018.

Douglas was born in Dawsonville on May 23, 1941. He was preceded in death by his mother Effie Goode.  Douglas worked as a tile setter with his brother.  He loved his hobby building small table top houses.

Survivors include his wife, of 36 years, Veronica Goode, Dahlonega; brother Huey Goode; sisters Eunice Reed and Patricia Goode.

Dillard James Armstrong, age 73 of Dahlonega, Georgia went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hall County, Georgia on July 8, 1944, he was the son of the late Dillard and Kate Armstrong. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Annelle Armstrong, brother Dennis Reeves and father in law Alvin Self.  Mr. Armstrong attended Lumpkin County High School and was self-employed as a masonry contractor for over 40 years, leaving his mark on many homes and business throughout Northeast Georgia.

James devoted many years to the youth of Lumpkin County as a volunteer coach in the baseball programs. He also supported his sons, nieces, nephews and granddaughter in a variety of sporting events all over the country.  He also spent many hours watching NASCAR with his family. Mr. Armstrong was a member of The Torch-Dahlonega and volunteered with the There’s Hope for the Hungry program.  He was avid gardener and took pride in the variety of flowers in his yard.   James could be found most Wednesday and Saturday mornings eating breakfast with his brothers at local restaurants, inspiring many with their close bond and love for each other.

Mr. Armstrong is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sue Armstrong of Dahlonega, his son David Armstrong of Dahlonega, son and daughter in law Neil and Jill Armstrong of Blue Ridge, daughter Missy Norrell of Dahlonega, his granddaughter Neilie Jace Armstrong of Blue Ridge, and mother in law Faye Self of Dahlonega. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters in law Henry and Claudine Armstrong, Frank and Barbra Armstrong, and Larry and Lynn Armstrong all of Dahlonega, sister in law Mary Ruth Reeves, mother in law, Faye Self, brothers in law and sisters in law, Bobby and Deborah Self, Gina and Terry Fields, Phillip and Gaylena Self and Michael and Julie Self all of Dahlonega. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family members as well.

Funeral services will be held at Dahlonega Funeral Home, Friday May 18^th at 1:00 pm.  Visitation will be on Thursday, May 17^th 2-4 and 6-8 pm, and on Friday, May 18^th 10-12 pm.  Rev. David Masters and Rev. Quentin Self will officiate.

Mrs. Clara Nell Smith, age 77, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018.

Mrs. Smith was born in Hall County on September 7, 1940 to the late Charlie and Carrie Hopper McDonald. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Odell Smith; sisters Henrieta Grizzle and Grace McDonald; brothers James McDonald, Junior McDonald, Dennis McDonald, and Roy McDonald.  Mrs. Smith retired from Fieldale as a lab tech.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. James Dillard Miller, age 63, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, May 12, 2018.

James was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on July 8, 1954 to the late Willis R. and Lois Gilstrap Miller.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents Dillard and Martha Gilstrap; aunts and uncles Inez and Glenn Head; Lily Mae and Claude Ferguson; Nancy Gilstrap; Frances Gilstrap; and John Thompson.

James was a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.  He was very active in AWANA and had received recognition for perfect attendance two years running. James was active in Connectabilty where he made many cherished friends. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.  James loved people and wanted to help them any way he could.

Survivors include his twin brother, who he rarely spent a day apart from, Archie Miller, Dahlonega; sister and brother in law Margie M. and Jerry Pocock, Dawsonville; uncles Claude Gilstrap, Dahlonega; Carlton Gilstrap, Gainesville; and J.C. Gilstrap, Dahlonega; aunts Ruby Gilstrap, Dahlonega; and Opal Thompson, Gainesville; nephew Heath Coleman, Cumming; niece Heather Ethridge, Suches; numerous other relatives and friends.

Luther David Justus, age 86, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, April 28, 2018.

Mr. Justus was born March 8, 1932 in Lumpkin County to the late Luther J. and Elsie Jones Justus. He was a Veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Mr. Justus worked for the Federal Prison System and was a member of Blue Mountain Lodge # 38 F&AM. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Sandra Casteel Justus; son David Justus, brothers Edward Justus, Eldo Justus, Daniel Justus and sister Ruth Justus.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and Jerry Moon, Dacula; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Crystal Justus, Dahlonega; Robert and Betty Justus, Winston; daughter, Janet Smallwood, Eatonton; brothers and sisters-in-law, L.J. and Marie Justus; Johnny and Joan Justus, all of Dahlonega; brother in law and sister in law Tommy and Robbie Casteel, Murrayville; 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Jason Monroe Caldwell, age 40 of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Jason was born in Hall County on October 17, 1977. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Bud Davis, paternal grandparents Poole and Hazel Caldwell, and uncle Harmon Davis.  Jason was a 1996 graduate of Lumpkin County High School.  He was a supervisor for Fieldale.  Jason loved to hunt, fish, and camp. His best buddy and faithful friend was “Rowdy” his dog.  He was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include his parents Stanley and Mildred Caldwell; brother and sister in law Brett and Kim Caldwell; maternal grandmother Velvia Davis; nephews Griffin Caldwell, Landon Caldwell, Henley Caldwell, Dallas Gaddis; nieces Kindal Whitlock and Kinleigh Whitlock; uncles and aunts Rev. Lyman and Sandra Caldwell, Lyndal and Mimi Caldwell; and Bonnie and Jay Cantrell; cousins Jody Caldwell, Josh Caldwell, Robin Davis, and Jamie Rider.

Mr. Douglas Garland Bass, age 84, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018 with his wife and children by his side at his home that he loved in Dahlonega.

Douglas was born in Black Creek, NC on July 5, 1933 to the late William Garland Bass and Dixie Lois Williamson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Sue and brother Billy. Douglas was called upon by his country to serve and he did so faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Affectionately known by his grandchildren as “GDad”, he was loved and cherished by his family very much. Also known by family and friends as “Dougie-Fresh”, Douglas knew what it was to live, to laugh, and to love. He taught his family this every day. He was a charming and generous man who never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, his everything Wanda Bass, Dahlonega; daughter Kym Janasov (Joseph), Duluth; son David Bass (Dede), Birmingham, AL; daughter Diane Kesler (David), Dahlonega; son Terry Bass, Buford; daughter Sherry Griggs (Bob), Dahlonega; daughter Cindy Bass, Duluth; sister Carolyn Casey, Annapolis, MD; brother Butch Bass Cookeville, TN; sister Dixie Lynn Slebzak, Lewes, DE; brother Wayne Sterago, Annapolis, MD; sweet cousin Evelyn Price (Eddie), Wilson, NC; thirteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two more on the way. Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at the chapel of Banister Funeral Home.  The Rev. Thomas Brookshire will officiate.  Mr. Bass will receive military honors at his service and his wishes were to be cremated. The family will receive friends before the service from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.  Following the service the family will have a reception and celebration of Doug’s life at the funeral home.

Mr. Carney was born in Blairsville, GA on March 18, 1936. He is preceded in death by his parents Jethro and Ethel Dover Carney, first wife Martha Carney, second wife Charlsea Mason Carney, step daughter Nancy Maness, step son Ricky Duckworth, and step son Larry Duckworth.  Mr. Carney was a faithful member of Enon Baptist Church.

Mr. Danny Lee Kerns Sr., age 62, of Dahlonega, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018.

Mr. Kerns was born in Lumpkin County on December 29, 1955 to the late George and Mary Jane Kerns. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother George Kerns.  Mr. Kerns was retired from Panduit and he was a very simple man.

Survivors include his son Danny Lee “D.J.” Kerns Jr., Murrayville; brother and sister in law Charles and Diane Kerns, Demorest.

Joyce “Faye” Whelchel Abercrombie age 82 of Dahlonega passed away on March 8, 2018 following an extended illness. Faye was born September 23, 1935.  She was a native of Dahlonega and member of Etowah Baptist Church.  Mrs. Abercrombie was a retired secretary from the State Rehabilitation Office Of Georgia. She also worked alongside her daughter at Long Branch Day Care; where all the children knew and loved her and called her Granny. She will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Abercrombie is preceded in death by her parents Loye Whelchel and Ruby Wilson Whelchel; and her brother Earl Whelchel.

Mrs. Abercrombie is survived by her loving husband Clarence Abercrombie, son Scott Abercrombie and daughter Rhonda Abercrombie. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jeremy (Brittani) Abercrombie, Daniel (Crystal) Abercrombie, great grandson Carson Abercrombie, and niece Jan Otter.

Funeral Service will be held on Sunday March 11 , 2018 at 3pm in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. Rev. Les Fuller and Rev. Roger Dunagan will officiate.  Family will receive friends on Sunday from 11am until service time.

Interment will follow at Etowah Baptist Church Cemetery 789 Auraria Road, Dawsonville, GA 30534.

Donald Martin DeHart, age 76, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018.

Mr. DeHart was born May 20, 1941 in Robbinsville, NC to the late Fred James DeHart and Rosie L. Prince DeHart. Donald was a former crane operator and was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Michael DeHart, sisters, Dorothy Holland, Eulah Alley and Beulah Conn.

Survivors include his wife, Louise DeHart, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Jacki DeHart, Dahlonega; daughter-in-law, Jackie DeHart, Cumming; grandchildren, Kayla DeHart, Shannon DeHart, Leah DeHart; brother, Ray DeHart, Dahlonega; sisters, Gladys McClain, Ashville, NC; Joyce Ray, Ashville, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at the Chapel of Banister Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
