Holly Theatre to get Fox Theatre Institute grant

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The historic Holly Theatre in Dahlonega will receive a $6,600 grant from Fox Theatre Institute (FTI) to undertake a project to study the structural areas of the stage and supporting backstage areas.

FTI announced last week that it will award $479,465 in grants to 2018-2019 recipients of the historic preservation, urgent/emergency fund, historic structure studies or planning grants.

Habersham Community Theatre in Clarkesville will receive $48,400 in financial aid. Partners at the Habersham Community Theatre will use FTI grant funding for a project that includes the stabilization of the façade of the building and exterior repair, a potential beam installation and historic brick and stucco repair.

As part of its ongoing commitment to Georgia’s historic theaters, the 2018-19 FTI grant program seeks to provide significant economic and cultural impact to local communities across the state, as well as considering partnership funds in Alabama. FTI’s Preservation Grant Program and Historic Preservation Services to date supported 47 projects totaling more than $1,370,800 in maintenance and physical improvement efforts over the past nine years. FTI is part of the nonprofit’s overall strategic plan to further increase its impact and outreach.

The historic Holly Theatre was constructed as a movie theater in 1948, and is currently operated as a non-profit theatrical venue.[2] It puts on performances of musicals and straight plays, generally five main stage productions a season, and a varying number of children’s shows.

Between shows, it hosts concerts and community events, and can be rented for events. Additionally, it provides acting and dance classes for children and adults. It seats 256 on the main level and an additional 50 in the balcony. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
