DAHLONEGA, Ga. — David Miller is eager to take his seat as one of two newly-elected officials on the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners next week. Miller has been preparing himself for his new leadership role by attending as many meetings as possible in an effort to gain a better understanding of the issues the Board will face in 2017.

“The county is in pretty good shape,” he said recently. But he recognizes there are some issues that divide city and county governments and one of his top priorities will be to resolve those issues so the two governments can work together.

“There are good people on both sides,” he said. “Right now the county is looking at service delivery strategy.”

Dahlonega contracts with Lumpkin County to provide specific services, including supplementary fire services to the incorporated area of Dahlonega, supplemental law enforcement expenses within the city incurred by Lumpkin County by virtue of the City’s use of off duty deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and a 10 percent add-on fee designated by statute for “jail construction and staffing” as an acceptable payment for housing city inmates. The city also pays for medical coverage provided to city inmates incarcerated solely from sentences entered by the Municipal Court.

Miller’s campaign for county commission was based on a three-pronged platform that included promoting the county’s agri-tourism and wine industry, improved healthcare access for county residents and high-speed internet.

He said he was gratified to see the recent opening of Northeast Georgia Healthcare System’s new Urgent Care Clinic in the county this month.
Miller said he is anxious to see the final report of the state’s Joint Study Committee on High Speed Broadband Communications Access for all Georgians. The legislative committee, headed by State Senator Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega) and State Rep. Kevin Tanner (R-Dawsonville) has held multiple town hall meetings this summer in an effort to bring high-speed cable to the rural areas of the state.

Miller is the owner of MPA Holdings, LLC, a professor in the College of Business and Mass Communications at Brenau University where he also serves as Lead Faculty for the MBA Program in Healthcare Management and teaches classes in Healthcare and Strategic Management. He was listed in the 2015 “Who’s Who in Georgia Education” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
He and wife Sue have been married for 30 years, have two children, Alex and Liz, and are members of Creekstone Church in Dahlonega.
