Obituaries

Katie Mae McLain Medlin, age 86, of Dahlonega, died Monday, February 6th, 2017 after suffering a stroke the previous Monday at North Georgia Assisted Living in Dawsonville.

Katie was born in Kildav, Harlan County, Kentucky on June 24, 1930 to the late Willie Oliver and Alma Ellen McLain.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bishop William Floyd Medlin; brothers Jackie, Russell, Dennis, Garfield, Harold, Leonard and Bobby McLain; and sister Mildred McLain.

She is survived by her three children Linda and Don Munn, Woodstock, Ga., Denise and Mike Case, Dahlonega, Ga., Mark and Cheryl Medlin, Fayetteville, Ga. Grandchildren Donita and Marc Walker, Nathan and Stephanie Munn, Eric and Michele Swanson, Amanda and Will Hodge, Phillip and Amanda Medlin, Rebekah and Matt Armstrong, Emily and Jordan Horne, Olivia Medlin and Clark Medlin;  great-grand children Alexis and Ansley Walker, Mason, Carter and Mckenzie Munn, Savannah and Brenden Swanson, Madison Hofner, Jack, Aidan and Kate Medlin, Jonah, Norah and Ava Armstrong.  A sister Dorothy Tomlinson and brother Norman McLain.

Katie left home at age 14 to finish high school at BTS in Sevierville,TN.  She then attended Lee College in Cleveland, TN. where she met her husband W. Floyd Medlin (who came to Lee after serving in WWII) and “The rest is history”.  Three generations of the family have attended what is now Lee University because of Katie and Floyd. After attending Lee College (University) Katie and Floyd began pastoral ministry and faithfully served Church of God congregations for 35 years in Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Indiana, Illinois and Georgia.  As a pastor’s wife Katie served as a Sunday school teacher, ladies ministry leader, helped fund church budgets by making fried pies and dinners, was a soloist in church, ministered in nursing homes singing with her husband and children. Katie worked hard to make all the parsonages a home and then making clothes for her family as an INCREDIBLE seamstress. Later in life she made everything from curtains, costumes, church robes, to baby items for all her family, extended family and friends. Her self-appointed role as family historian and story teller, on behalf of her 11 siblings, will be greatly missed. Most of all she will be remembered and cherished by her children/grandchildren as leaving a legacy of faithful Christian service. The heritage she left taught them to love the Lord and serve others sacrificially.

Services to be held on February 9, 2017 at Dahlonega Funeral Home at 11:00 am with visitation/viewing at 10:00am in the Chapel.  Officiating ministers are Bishop Mark Medlin and Bishop Phillip Medlin

Following, Bishop Don Munn will serve at the Interment which will be at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga.
