Obituaries

Mrs. Gertrude Elizabeth Bell Fitts, age 92, of Dahlonega passed from this life and entered into her home with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 with her family at her side.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 15, 1927 to parents Theodore and Anna O’Toole Bell, Gertrude had lived in Dahlonega since 1960.  She was a loved and precious wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt.  She truly loved and enjoyed her family.  She was one of the first members of St. Luke’s Catholic Church where she was active with the thrift store and White Christmas and she was a member of the church choir.  She was also instrumental in the starting of St. Luke’s religious classes.  She was a great cook and baker and was famous for her coffee cakes.  Gertrude was always ready to feed you anytime, day or night.  She loved to see you eat and enjoyed the company.  Her pretty blue eyes, hugs and “I love you’s” will be missed.  She was an angel with a servant’s heart.

In addition to her parents, Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years James Clynton Fitts, Sr., infant daughter Susan Fitts, son James C. “Jimmy” Fitts, Jr., brothers Theodore Bell, Frank Bell and George Bell, granddaughter Georgette Fitts, and son-in-law John Albert Madden, Jr.  She is survived by her children Elizabeth and Roger Mincey, Claudette Lee, Joseph Fitts, Theresa and David Voss, Arthur and Joan Fitts, all of Dahlonega, Joyce Madden, Elberton, GA, and Dorothy and Randall Brookshire, Murrayville; daughter-in-law Susan Kendall Fitts, Dahlonega; Brother Joseph and Janet Bell, New York; sister Anna May Trotto, Virginia . Ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and other relatives also survive.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 20, 2019 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church with Father Matthew Dalrymple and Father Michael Revak officiating.  Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Friday from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home and a Rosary Service will be held at 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Gertrude’s name may be made to St Luke’s Evangelist Catholic Church, 91 N Parks Street, Dahlonega, GA 30533.
