Gunfire, two-hour standoff with police ends with arrest but no injuries

Michael Eugene Morgan

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – This normally tranquil Lumpkin County erupted in gunfire last night as a despondent man held deputies off for more than two hours, firing shots inside and outside his residence on Pilgrim Road.

Sheriff Stacy Jarrard said, “Myself and seven officers responded to a call from neighbors at around 7 or 7:30 p.m. about shots being fired.”

According to Jarrard, “47-year-old Michael Eugene Morgan was intoxicated and very despondent over the death of his wife in November and wanted to end his life. He kept going inside and outside firing shots. He wanted us to end his life.”

Jarrard said there were two or three females inside the residence. Two of them came out voluntarily but one stayed inside trying to talk him down from his depression.

He added that the man was finally subdued with the use of non-lethal weapons.

Morgan was first transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Dahlonega for treatment then to the Lumpkin County Detention Center where he is charged with felony obstruction of an officer and aggravated assault on an officer.

“It’s my hope and prayer that he gets out of his depression,” Jarrard said. “Our officers did a great job last night. I’m thankful that no one lost their life. It was a situation that had a high potential for loss of life.”

  • You need to make a correction on who was transported to the hospital....it wasn't JARRARD.
