Jarrard wins another term as sheriff

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. – Sheriff Stacy Jarrard and District 1 Board of Education member Mera Turner both won reelection in two of the contested races in Tuesday’s Republican Party Primary but the Ninth District Congress and Ninth District State Representative races are headed for an August runoff.

Jarrard won his fourth term in office, beating challenger Jack Jones. Jarrard received 6,363 votes to Jones 827. Turner defeated Ryan Scott 4,294 to 3,791. Most other county races were uncontested. All three county commission positions were uncontested as was the coroner’s race.

In the Ninth District State Representative race Dawson County Board of Education member Will Wade received 34.85 percent of the vote to total in the two counties represented (Lumpkin and Dawson). Lumpkin County attorney Steve Leibel finished second with 20.27 percent. Former Lumpkin County Commissioner Doug Sherrill finished third with 17.81 percent

State Representative Matt Gurtler of Tiger and Athens gun store owner Andrew Clyde face a runoff in the race to replace Doug Collins as the U.S. Representative in the Ninth District. Gurtler received 22.4 percent of the vote to Clyde’s 18.6. State Rep. Kevin Tanner finished third with 15.5 percent.

The education special purpose local option sales tax (ESPLOST) passed by a wide margin of 5,257 to 2,093 and the Brunch Bill was approved 4,536 to 3,016.
