Dahlonega, Ga.- The City Council approved the Ordinance 2021-09 and a Resolution for a Special Referendum to add issuing licenses for the sale of distilled spirits to the November ballot for the election.

During their work session, Sally Trapnell brought the idea of adding Pickle Ball courts to the swim beach at Yahoola Creek Reservoir before the council, and Dudley Owens proposed a new crosswalk and sidewalk for Chestatee Street. Lastly, the council bid farewell to Finance Director Melody Marlow and welcome a new director Allison Martin.

Ordinance 2021-09 confirms the 2021 Municipal General Election, appoints consistent with the IGA Lumpkin County to conduct the elections, sets time and dates for the qualification, appoints a qualifying officer and an alternate, identifies qualifying fees, identifies that the positions to be filled are the Mayor and Council Post 1, 2, and 3. It also sets the qualifications for candidates that are running and other matters regarding the election.  The qualifying dates for the November election are August 17, 18, and 19.

The resolution for a special referendum authorizes the city to issue licenses for the package sale of distilled spirits if the citizens vote for it in the election. The resolution puts the matter on the ballot for the citizens to vote on.

“Obviously the reason we are able to do this is that the state laws have changed so that opens it up for able to do the referendum, I think it should go out to the people to vote everybody has an opinion,” commented Councilman Johnny Ariemma.

Sally Trapnell North Georgia and Lumpkin County Pickle Ball Ambassador came to the council with a request for six pickleball courts to be added in when the new swim beach at Yahoola Creek Reservoir is finished. She presented a video featuring what pickleball is the link for the video is here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqLRRNOpe8U

The cost for the courts would be $85,000.00. With another $35-40,000 for twelve light fixtures. At this time the council took no action but they did say if the project is to move forward there would need to be cooperation from the County.

“Park and Rec are through the county and we share things back and forth but try not to do duplicate things and that seems only natural your organization would approach the county with our support and partnership to get this going forward,” explained Councilman Ron Larson.

The Proposed Crosswalk and accompanying sidewalk

Lastly, Dudley Owens came before to ask the council to consider adding a fifth crosswalk to South Chestatee Street at the intersection with Arcadia. The council and staff are looking into the visible options to take on this project.
