The Lumpkin County Indians welcomed the Franklin County Lions at Cottrell Field looking to start the season off 3-0 for the first time since 2003 and they did just that. The Indians continued their dominance beating the Lions 48-0 in the contest. Head coach Heath Webb and his team have played in the rain three weeks in a row, but that has not stopped them from dominating their opponents. When asked about playing so well in the rain, coach Webb said “It’s a desire, it’s a fight you know, they wanna play, they wanna play. They wanna prove people wrong, there’s nothing within them that’s gonna get them to back down.” The Indians certainly did not back down, scoring early and often, putting up 41 unanswered points in the first half alone. The offense was electric throughout the game for the Indians. On the other side of the ball, the defense, led by #22 Will Wood and #1 Cal Faulkner completely shut down the Lion’s offense the entire game. The Lions could not find an answer for the lockdown defense by the Indians and were unable to stop their offensive onslaught. The Indians shut out the Lions 48-0 and continued their storybook season with a 3-0 record, outscoring their opponents 137-13 thus far.

The game began with the Lions receiving the ball, only to go three and out, forcing them to punt to the Indians. #18 Cooper Scott would lead the charge for the Indians with a quality drive ending in a one-yard rushing touchdown by Scott making the score 7-0 Indians within the first three minutes of the game. The Lions got the ball back, but not for long as the player of the week #22 Will Wood returned a Lions fumble for a touchdown making the score 13-0 as the extra point was no good. Immediately following the Lion’s turnover, they would turn the ball over again as #1 Cal Faulkner intercepted the ball to give the Indians possession. The drive would end in another score as running back #32 Mason Sullens rushed in for a touchdown making the score 20-0 after the extra point. The quarter would come to a close with the Indians up 20-0 on the Lions who would have the ball to begin the second quarter.

The Lion’s offensive woes would continue as they were unable to score, turning the ball over on downs on the Indian’s five-yard line. The Indians would respond by taking the ball from their five-yard line to the other side of the field, scoring on a rush by quarterback Cooper Scott, making the score 27-0. The Lions would get the ball back and were unable to score, throwing another interception with seven minutes left in the half. The Indians would quickly respond, scoring again on a rushing touchdown by Mason Sullens, making the score 34-0 Indians. The Lions were unable to score following the drive by the Indians, forced to punt, giving the Indians the ball back at their 22-yard line. The Indians would respond, ending their series with an 8-yard rush for a touchdown by Cooper Scott, making the score 41 Indians, 0 Lions. The half would come to a close after a turnover by the Lions and the Indians respectively.

The second half began with the Indians receiving the ball. Cal Faulkner was able to return the kick to their 40-yard line, setting up another potential scoring drive for the Indians. Running back #28 Gerald Walker ran the ball on the next play and made it to the endzone, however, a holding flag was called against the Indians, spotting the ball back to their 40-yard line. The Indians were not able to overcome the holding call and turned the ball over on downs. The Lions were unable to respond in the quarter and suffered multiple offside flags that would prevent them from putting together a scoring drive. The Indians would score again with three minutes left in the quarter thanks to Will Wood. Wood made an impressive run on 4th and 2, accruing over thirty yards before making it to the endzone, making the score 48-0 Indians.

As the final quarter began, the Lions would punt after failing to score their previous drive in the final minutes of the third. The Indians would have possession for five minutes before turning the ball over on downs as they went for it on 4th and 13. The Lions looked to put one more drive together in the hopes that they could avoid being shut out. The Lions were unsuccessful and punted the ball back to the Indians with four minutes left in the contest. The Indians would run the ball several times and complete a pass play within the Lion’s 20-yard line as the clock winded down. The clock ran out and for the first time since 2003, the Lumpkin County Indians were 3-0 to start their season. Coach Webb and the Indians look to continue their phenomenal season next week as they take on the Temple High School Tigers at home.
