Indians Outlast Dunwoody in Home Thriller

Dahlonega, Ga. – Lumpkin County leaned on senior playmaker Nolan Matthews Friday night, and he delivered in a big way. Scoring all five of the Indians’ touchdowns, Matthews powered Lumpkin to a 32–24 victory over Dunwoody in front of a lively home crowd.

Matthews carried the ball 32 times for 161 yards and four rushing touchdowns while also hauling in three passes for 95 yards and a score. Quarterback Mason Hester added balance through the air, completing 13 of 23 passes for 197 yards, including a 49-yard strike to Matthews late in the second quarter.

The game was a back-and-forth battle early. Matthews opened the scoring with a 1-yard plunge, only for Dunwoody to immediately answer with a kickoff return touchdown. After another Matthews run gave Lumpkin a 13–7 edge, the Wildcats surged ahead 21–13 before halftime. Hester’s long touchdown pass to Matthews briefly closed the gap, but Dunwoody tacked on a field goal just before the break to lead 24–19.

The second half belonged to the Indians’ defense and Matthews. The senior running back muscled his way into the end zone twice in the fourth quarter from inside the five, and the Lumpkin defense stood tall down the stretch to preserve the win.

With the victory, Lumpkin County improves to 2–1 on the season, extending its winning streak to two games. The Indians now turn their attention to a key region test next week against Greater Atlanta Christian, while Dunwoody (1–2) will look to rebound against Tri-Cities.
