Goldin Woody

July 03, 1940 – June 10, 2019

Goldin C. Woody, Age 78. Senior Chief Petty Officer, US Navy (Ret).
Departed this earth on June 11th 2019, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. In his last days, he was surrounded by his loving family and grandchildren, which were the pride and joy of his life.

Mr. Woody was born and raised in Lumpkin County, GA. While in high school in 1957, he joined the US Army Reserves and then entered the US Navy in 1959, retiring in 1977. After his military service, he was employed at Scientific-Atlanta Inc. He held degrees in in Industrial Engineering and Business Administration, retiring in 1997 as a Senior Quality Engineer with certifications as Certified Welding Inspector (American Welding Society) and Certified Quality Engineer (American Society for Quality Control).

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Drucilla J. Woody, six children and their spouses: Gordon & Karen Woody (Dahlonega GA), James & Rosa Woody (Rio Grande Costa Rica), Elizabeth & Arthur Brown (Dawsonville GA), Dr. Paul C. Woody, D.O. (Dahlonega GA), Michael & Natalie Woody (Venice FL), and John & Jarka Woody (Round Rock TX). Also among his surviving family are 17 grandchildren.

Mr. Woody was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Hunt R. Woody Sr. and Grace Marie Goldin Woody, brothers Rogers and Wayne Woody and their grandson Tyler A. Woody. He was the grandson of Gover Cleveland Goldin and Mae Jemima McBrayer and Willis Rabun Woody and Adalizer Rogers.

The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick Connaro, M.D. for his expert medical advice and services. Also appreciation to Dr. Ronald Steis and Barbara Burke, PA, of Atlanta Cancer Center, and for the love and care provided by Homestead Hospice.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 13th from 5:30 pm -8:00 pm at Dahlonega Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 14th, at 4:00pm at St. Luke Catholic Church in Dahlonega. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega.

Damaris Corrigan

April 04, 1961 – May 28, 2019

Dr. Damaris Moore Corrigan, 58, passed away on 28 May 2019 after a 25-year battle with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH). The granddaughter of Chester A. ‘Ted’ and Pauline Bell and daughter of Nicky R. and Maurice Moore of Opelika, Alabama, Damaris was a graduate of Opelika High School in Alabama. She went on to take her B.A. from Newcomb College in New Orleans, Summa Cum Laude, in 1983, Honours from St. Andrews University, Scotland (Latin), J.D. Tulane School of Law (Legal History), M.A. Tulane University (Classics), Ph.D. University of Texas-Austin (Classics) before accepting a position as professor of Latin, Ancient Greek, Roman Law and Ancient Military History at the University of Georgia, Athens, Department of Classics. She studied under some of the world’s leading thinkers and educators, spoke Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian, German, and French and was the author of a book, Riders on High: The Cavalry of Alexander the Great, as well as several journal articles. An accomplished and exceptionally knowledgeable horse woman and equestrienne, Damaris won many Western riding competitions and was a lifelong member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Foundation Quarter Horse Association. Her finest personal accomplishment may have been her marriage, which began 6 August 1986, for she and her husband were inseparable, devoted, content and, owing to her life-threatening disease, lived every day to the fullest. They truly lived as ‘happily ever after’ as the good Lord allows. Dedicated to a life of learning, Damaris traveled extensively with him through the United Kingdom and Italy, where she leaves many friends, and made a second home of Windsor, England. Her friends and family will remember her as an extraordinarily intelligent woman whose profound knowledge and phenomenal memory was equaled by her quiet kindness, extraordinary wit and sense of humor, and unfailing consideration of others. She lived every day up to her personal code of honesty and integrity and was truly incapable of telling a falsehood or bracing a lie. She practiced the art of compassionate and diplomatic silence better than anyone. In short, she knew the secret of a happy life, shared it with a loving husband and earned his admiration, pride, and love with every precious breath she took. She leaves behind countless students bettered by her skill and dedication, a wealth of friends, two beloved brothers, Jeff and Peter Moore, their wives who were like her own sisters, Wanda and Joan Moore, three cherished nieces, Victoria Spates (Paul), Tiffany Sanders (Jason), and Taylor Moore, and a sister as well as a father- and mother-in-law whom she loved as her own parents, Sheldon and Constance Bernstein of Leawood, Kansas, and her husband of thirty-three years, Dr. Brian Jay Corrigan, who is her soul mate for whom another thirty-three years would have still been all-too-short a time to spend in her extraordinary, admirable and deeply loved company. Her ashes will reside at her home until her husband can join her, at which time they will be scattered together at their home in England.

Betty Morgan Kelley

September 26, 1935 – June 01, 2019

Mrs. Betty Morgan Kelley, age 83, of Dahlonega, formerly of Cave City, AR., went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her beloved family on Saturday, June 1, 2019.

Betty was born on September 26, 1935, to Ray and Ione Morgan. After her marriage to Sid Kelley in January 1953, they moved to Coloma, Michigan, where they lived until returning to Cave City in 1965. She resided in Cave City until 2012 when she moved to Dahlonega, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Sidney (Sid) Kelley and brothers, Junior and Wilson Morgan and her sister, Mary Morgan Jones. Betty was a member of First Baptist Church of Cave City. She was a strong and loving mother having raised up four children after the death of her husband. Betty was deeply loved by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved cooking for friends and family. Betty also loved working outdoors, enjoying the things of nature, and drawing.

Survivors include her son, Stan (Sally) Kelley of Dahlonega, Georgia, daughters Fran (Paul) Matthews of Cave City, Sharon (Doug) Davis of Searcy, AR, and Lisa (Greg) Crabtree, also of Cave City. Betty’s grandchildren are Brandi (Mark) Turner of Cleveland, GA, Lindsey (Hank) Haynes of Dahlonega, GA, Matthew Kelley of Salisbury, NC, Josh (Amy) Matthews of Cave City, AR, Zach Hunter of Toronto, Canada, and Rachel (Colton) Dunbar of Jonesboro, AR. Great-grandchildren include Logan and Cooper Turner of Cleveland, GA, Sarah Grayce and Rhett Haynes of Dahlonega, GA, Samuel and Kate Matthews of Cave City, AR. Betty was also survived by her brother, Ted Morgan of Sitka, AR.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at the Qualls Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City with funeral services immediately following at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Betty’s son, Stan Kelley, will officiate the service. Interment will follow in the Parsley Cemetery.

Mr. James Martin, age 93, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, September 30, 2019.

Our devoted husband and father passed from this world early in the morning of September 30, 2019 to join his beloved wife of 70 years at the Trianon Dance Hall in Toledo where they met to start a brand new dance card with his favorite polka partner.  He was a retiree of DuPont where he worked for 43 years serving in refinish sales, training, and education.  He was proud to say that the checks were “still coming” from DuPont for the last 31 years, after he said “adios!”

Mr. Martin attended Bowling Green University of Ohio, “Ziggy Zaggy, Ziggy Zaggy, Oy Oy Oy!” and he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.  He and his wife Dorothy raised seven children living in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Florida, and last but not least, Georgia.  Mr. Martin was a lover of stories and words and there was not a person who was a stranger to him.  He shared stories of summers in Tutor Key, Kentucky at his grandfather’s apple orchards and also of the many jobs he held from the time he was 13 starting with cleaning railroad engines and ending with training and education of people at DuPont.

Mr. Martin was an avid reader who loved a good book especially if it was about the Civil War.  He would let you borrow a book, but he kept close tabs on them.  Mr. Martin was a true servant volunteering for many positions at St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the Dahlonega community.  He always said “keep your sense of humor to get through life’s adversities” and “getting old is not for sissies”.

Mr. Martin was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 18, 1926.  He was preceded in death by his parents Edna Van Hoose Martin Sparks and Clarence Martin.  His step-father was the great Ralph Sparks and was affectionately known as “Sparky”.

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law William and Janet Martin, Cleveland; son James V.H. Martin II, Dahlonega; daughters and sons-in-law Jacqueline and Alan McDonald, Charlotte, NC, Edna and David Guntert, Germantown, TN, and Barbara and Marc Shanberg, Tampa, FL; son Matthew Martin, Nashville, TN; daughter and son-in-law Suzan Martin and Dominic Cianciola, Tampa, FL; sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Michael Mahovlich, Dade City, FL; grandchildren Hannah Largacci, James III and Ashley Martin, Heather and Adam Stockstill, Brendan McDonald, Christopher and Megan Guntert, Alexandra Guntert, Elizabeth Shanberg and Patrick Van House, Andrew Shanberg, Savannah Martin, Scarlett Martin, Ava Cianciola, and Ryan Backmann; great-grandchildren Emma and Margaret Largacci, Thaddeus, Guy, and Anya Martin, and Austin and Blake Stockstill.

A funeral mass is scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, October 4, 2019 at St. Luke’s the Evangelist Catholic Church.  Father Matthew Dalrymple and Father Edward Danneker will officiate.  Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.  A Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday following visitation hours.

Mr. James “Boy” “Spider” Edward Smallwood, age 53, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019.

James was born in Hall County on October 5, 1965.  He was preceded in death by his dad L.D. Smallwood, sister-in-law Ann Smallwood, and uncle Roger Smallwood.  James was a beloved “Papa” to his two granddaughters.  He loved to fish, hunt, and camp with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Michelle Smallwood; son and daughter-in-law Roger and Quaneshia Smallwood; daughter and fiance Melissa Smallwood and Lee Jarrells, all of Dahlonega; daughter Brianna Smallwood, Clarkesville; son Steven Evans, Dahlonega; son Jesse Loudermilk, Cumming; granddaughters Ava and Kleo Smallwood; mother Frances Smallwood, Murrayville; sister and brother-in-law Janice and Joe Stringer, Dahlonega; brother Willis Smallwood, Ellijay; brother and sister-in-law Doug and Sandra Smallwood, Dahlonega; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Jason Chambers, Dahlonega; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Douglas Robert Manning, 79, of Dahlonega passed away at Northeast Georgia Medical Center on August 17, 2019 following a brief illness.  Born on February 7, 1940 to the late Percy and Olive Manning, Mr. Manning grew up in Birmingham, United Kingdom. He was predeceased by his father, mother, and sister-in-law Sandie Manning.  He is survived by his wife Anne Manning of Dahlonega, son Nigel Manning and his wife Heather, daughter Anne Hall and her husband Stan, son Nearing Adams and his wife Sara, daughter Athley Wear, daughter Caroline Eltringham and her husband Burke, brother Roger Manning and his wife Enid, sister Valerie Harder and her husband Hans, brother Keith Manning, grandson Matthew Hall, grandson Daniel Manning, grandson Peter Manning, granddaughter Sophie Hall, granddaughter Amy Thompson and her husband Jamie, granddaughter Rollins Wear, granddaughter Julia Adams, grandson Pace Eltringham, grandson Samuel Eltringham, grandson Sterling Eltringham, great-grandson Charlie Thompson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Manning moved to the United States in 1985 to work as an executive for a hygiene services company.  In 1998, he was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his contribution to business relations between S.E. United States and United Kingdom.  After retirement, he founded Wellbeing Hygiene, and worked there until it’s sale in 2016. Mr. Manning was an active member of the Dahlonega United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir.  He was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his family.

A Celebration of the Life of Mr. Manning will be held at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.  A reception and tea will be held in the fellowship hall after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wesley Foundation at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church at 107 S. Park Street, Dahlonega, GA 30533 or the Community Helping Place at 56 Camp Glisson Road, Dahlonega, GA 30533.

Jacqueline Sare Shuler age 72 of Gainesville, Ga passed away on August 9, 2019. She was born in Riverside CA to Jack and Wanda Sare and a graduate of Norte Vista HS. Mrs. Shuler was a member of Berea Baptist Church where she was an active part of (as her family stated)… literally everything! She loved her Yorkies, her beautiful lakehouse, and all of her kids, but more than anything she loved her soulmate Harry. She was so kind, generous, and was loved by all. She will be deeply missed.

Mrs. Shuler is survived by her spouse of Harry Shuler, her children Michelle Adas (Jack), Bob Congrove (Cindy), step children Julie Schwausch (Steve), Russell Shuler, Mark Shuler, and Laura Johnson, her grandchildren ; Aaron (Toni) Anna, and Alyssa Adas, Hannah, Abbey, and Emma Congrove, Tommy Schwausch, Stephanie Boatwright, Jared and Austin Shuler, Savannah and Stirling Johnson, and several great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday August 17th at 1:30 pm at Berea Baptist Church. Family will receive friends from 12:30pm until service time at the church.

Mr. Walter Donald Anderson, age 78, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, August 12, 2019.

Mr. Anderson was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County.  He was born on November 26, 1940 to the late Elmer Carl and Willie Mae Early Anderson.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughters Donna Butler and Rhonda Stephenson; his sister Brenda Grizzle; and his brother Heyward Anderson.

Mr. Anderson retired as a truck driver and he was a member of Cavender Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his grandchildren Jonathan and Danielle Butler, Jade and Will Gates, Adam and Holly Ray, and Reanna and Dillion Brown; great-grandchildren Jase Butler, Kade Butler, Beau Butler, Kayton Gates, and Mason Ray; brothers and sisters-in-law Tony and Susan Anderson, Melvin and Deborah Anderson, and Dudley and Suzanne Anderson; sister-in-law Joyce Anderson; brother-in-law Tracy Grizzle; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home.  The Rev. Stephen Adams will officiate.  Interment will follow in Cavender Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour Wednesday at the funeral home.

Jack Chapman

October 19, 1924 – June 23, 2019

Jack Frank Chapman, 94 of Dahlonega, GA passed away on Sunday Junes 23, 2019. He was born in Akron, Ohio on October 19, 1924, to the late Leonard and Lela Chapman. He was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Frankie Juanita Chapman. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Bonnie J. Chapman; son and daughter in law, Bob and Dena Chapman; daughter, Cathy Garner; grandson, Cale Chapman; granddaughters, Morgan (Ty) Maxwell; Sawyer Jones; Shyloh Garner; and great-grandson, Jack Dean Maxwell. Jack worked for Tenneco Gas Company as surveyor and engineer for 35 years. He traveled throughout the United States overseeing the installation of natural gas pipeline and retired from the company as Assistant Superintendent. After his retirement, Jack returned to live in his beloved homeplace of Dahlonega, GA. He honorably served during WWII as flight engineer in the United States Navy.

Visitation will be Wednesday June 26th, 2019 at Dahlonega Funeral Home from 6pm until 8pm and Thursday 12pm until time of service. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Thursday, June 27th, 2019 in the Chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home.

David Alan Kinkaid

August 06, 1955 – June 14, 2019

Mr. David Alan “The Peanut Man” Kinkaid passed away at his home in Dahlonega, Georgia on June 14, 2019 at the age of 63.

After his birth in Illinois and living a short while in South Carolina, David grew up and lived the majority of his life in the Dahlonega, Georgia community. He graduated from Lumpkin County High School in 1974 and then went on to receive a Certificate of Electrical Wiring and began his career in construction. Many homes in the Dahlonega area have received the love of his hands. Later in life, many of us enjoyed visiting David, “The Peanut Man”, off highway 19 and his offerings of key-lime jalapeno boiled peanuts (patent pending), natural honey, watermelons, tomatoes, and intentional conversations.

David has joined his predeceased mother, Betty Kinkaid, and is survived by his father, Don Kinkaid of Gainesville, Georgia; his younger brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Susan Kinkaid of Dahlonega, Georgia; his niece, Elizabeth Kinkaid of Edinburgh, Scotland; and his nephew and niece-in-law, Daniel and Brenna Kinkaid of Charlotte, North Carolina.

A memorial service for David will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 29, 2019 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Davis officiating. The family will receive friends following the service, also at the funeral home.
