Mr. Herman Talmadge Sullens, age 69, of Murrayville passed away Friday, January 18, 2019.

Mr. Sullens was born on July 2, 1949 to the late James Edward and Betty Jane Sullens.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Tommy Stephens, daughter Cheryl Sisk, stepson Robert Wayne, brothers Sylvester Sisk and Chub Sullens, and sisters Velva Bruce and Joan Stephens.  Herman was a family man and he loved being retired and gardening and yard selling.

Survivors include his spouse Frances Sullens, Murrayville; daughters Wanda Stockton, Dahlonega, Terry Walker, Gainesville, and Patricia Ballard, Gainesville; daughters and sons-in-law Teresa and Jerry Deyton, Gainesville, and Lisa and Billy Farr, Gainesville;son and daughter-in-law Shane and Tonya Peck, Dahlonega; sisters and brothers-in-law Lucy and Jim Carrier, Dahlonega, and Virginia and Robert Gibson, Dahlonega; brother and sister-in-law Tommy and Linda Sisk; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM Monday, January 21, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home.  The Rev. Jerry Deyton and the Rev. Timmy Sullens will officiate.  Interment will follow in Browns Chapel Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5:00-9:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Jerry Lee Babb, age 84, of Hartwell, GA passed away Monday, January 14, 2019.

Jerry was born on June 16, 1934 to the late Lloyd and Nora Babb. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Faye Gooch Babb, brothers Charles Babb and David Babb, and sister Mary Warren. Jerry was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Hartwell, GA. He loved going fishing and was a loving husband, father and “Grandpa”.

Survivors include his daughters and sons in law Candice and Thomas Atkinson, Royston; and Charis and Ronnie Ard, Royston; grandchildren Melinda Atkinson, Hannah Maddox (Robert), Kelsi Ard and Nicolas Ard (Kristi); great grandchildren Aria Maddox, Everly Maddox, Alex Ard and Nathaniel Ard; brother Robert Babb, Greensboro, NC.

Mrs. Denise Renee Head, age 53, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019.

Renee was born in Hall County on July 26, 1965.  She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Reid and Virginia Greenway and paternal grandparents Elmer and Lucy Head.  Renee was a loving mother and grandmother.  Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Nanny”.   Renee loved to fish and sing.  She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son Brandon Duff (Savanna Ballard), Villa Rica; daughter Whitney Duff (April), Dahlonega; grandchildren Aubrey Duff, Ansley Rogers, Sarah Duff, and Brooke Duff; mother and step-father Janice and Billy Williams, Dahlonega; father and step-mother Dude and Pat Head, Dahlonega; boyfriend and his son Waymon Earls and Blake Earls, Martin.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home.  The Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Mr. John Benjamin Abercrombie, age 88, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, November 19, 2018.

Mr. Abercrombie was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on July 12, 1930 to the late Charles G. and Florence Bragg Abercrombie.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Martha Free Abercrombie; son Johnny Abercrombie; daughter Pamela Abercrombie; brothers Bill Abercrombie, Walter Abercrombie, C.G. Abercrombie, Jr., and Elmer Abercrombie; sisters Lou Nell McDonald, Gurlie Mae Paul, and Margaret Rogers; and son in law Anthony Waters. Mr. Abercrombie served his country honorably in the United States Army. He owned and operated Abercrombie Grocery Store and he drove a school bus for Lumpkin County schools for 14 years and 2 months.  Mr. Abercrombie loved to fish and was affectionately called “Papa Ben” by his grandchildren.  He was proud to have been the longest living member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church that spanned for more than 74 years.

Survivors include his daughters Reba Duff (Clayton), and Susie Waters (Daniel Thomas) both of Dahlonega; grandchildren Benji Smith, Kevin Waters, Colby Duff, Steven Duff, and Sam Duff; 16 great grandchildren including Harley Smith; four great great grandchildren; brothers Tommy Abercrombie (Darlene), Dahlonega, and Garry Abercrombie (Regina), Texas; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 21, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home.  The Rev. Les Fuller will officiate.  Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors.

Ms. Goldia Loretta Reece, age 86, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018.

Goldia was a native and life long resident of Lumpkin County.  She was born on January 21, 1932 to the late Clarence Albert and Gertrude Essie Anderson Reece. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother in law J.T. Staton.  Goldia retired from the Lumpkin County school system as a worker in the lunch room.  She cared for each child she served and made sure they had plenty to eat.  Although Goldia had no children, she loved her nephews and nieces as her own.  She loved to spend time in the garden and grow food for her family and friends.  Goldia was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sister Sylvia Staton, Dahlonega; nephews and nieces Randy and Nancy Staton, Murrayville; Trent and Marty Staton, Dahlonega; Keith and Tanya Staton, Orlando, FL; great nephew K.C. Staton and great niece Kate Staton.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The Rev. Les Fuller and the Rev. Stephen Gerrells will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church #2 Cemetery with the Rev. Franklin Grant officiating.

She was the Drill Sergeant, Navigator, and Boss of her sisters. Ms. Burt is preceded in death by her mother Lillie C. (Jarrard) Burt. Barbara (Joan) Mitts Chancey–our “Granny” and to her beloved friends, warmly “Barb” daughter of the late Lloyd and Olive (Johnson) Mitts of Pennsylvania was born in Connellsville, PA on September 23, 1942. She was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Suches, GA. She has lived in Suches, GA for the last 19 years and Jupiter, FL for 40+ years prior. Barb was a talented cosmetologist, serving clients/friends in Florida and Georgia for over 30 years. She touched many lives through her love of people and hairdressing. She was a graduate of the Legal Career Institute in West Palm Beach, FL and worked as a paralegal for nearly 10 years before her retirement. She was devoted to family, and played a very important role in raising all four of her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, shopping, travel, music, and time with family. She peacefully left this temporary home to join her Heavenly Father on March 5, 2019 following a swift and valiant battle with Leukemia.

Granny’s warmth, humor, kindness, tenderness, strength, loyalty, and fiery spirit will be fondly remembered by all blessed to know and love her. Her legacy of love and light will be carried on through her son Lawrence A. Chancey, Sr. of Suches, GA, her grandsons Christopher Chancey of Suches, GA, Lawrence A. Chancey, Jr. of Cleveland, GA, Matthew A. McCutcheon and wife Sarah McCutcheon of Cleveland, GA, her granddaughter Amanda L. Bales and husband Cory Bales of Yulee, FL and her 6 great grandchildren: Champ and Ansley McCutcheon, and Lindsay, Madison, Sam, & Lily Bales, as well as her siblings Ronald Mitts of PA, and Jeannie Woodfin of FL, and her nieces and nephews as well.

A viewing service will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 4 p.m at Dahlonega Funeral Home 20 Gibson Rd. Dahlonega, GA 30533. Connie Putman Hancock

May 28, 1948 – January 27, 2019

Connie Putman Hancock passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, January 27^th, 2019 after an extended battle with multiple medical issues and illnesses.  She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and grew up in Lighthouse Point, Florida.  She moved and raised her three children in St. Petersburg, Florida and Lilburn, Georgia.  For the last 20 years she resided in Panama City Beach, Florida and post hurricane was in hospice care at her daughter’s house in Dahlonega, Georgia.

A true Putman at heart, Connie was stubborn, loving, generous, caring, and had the ability to persevere through any hardship or obstacle with grace and dignity. She had a kind heart and an ability to put a smile on anyone’s face.  Her strength of character enabled her to raise three amazing children nearly single handedly (albeit sometimes that hand had a wooden spoon attached).   She was her children’s’ world and was a lighthouse upon which every quality they possess came from and they will carry on her legacy in how they live their lives with the same tenacity and love for life as she possessed.

She was a lover of nearly every show on the Food Network, Turner Classic Movies, Lord of the Rings, dogs, panda bears, chocolate ice cream, full moons, sunshine and the sea. She never missed a chance to belt out the lyrics to Simply the Best, Babygirl, Goodbye Earl, or any Neil Diamond song no matter the company or the place.  Her smile was infectious and she left a lasting memory on all those she interacted with no matter the circumstance.

She was preceded in death by her father, Meredith “Putt” Putman and mother Dorothy “Dot” Putman, her late husband Sidney Prescott Rowe, and one brother. She is survived by her adoring children, Danielle Dickinson, Deb Rowe, and Michael Rowe, her ex-husband of 18 years, James Hancock, 2 sisters, 1 brother, and a host of other extended relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mildred Elizabeth Grizzle, age 83, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2018.

Mildred was born October 23, 1935 to the late Edgar Clinton and Etta Lee Young Mitchell.

Mildred was preceded in death by her sons William Grizzle and Billy Grizzle; sisters Ruby Dyer and Opal Rush; and brothers Junior Mitchell, Charles Mitchell and Gene Mitchell.

She was known as “Granny” and “the greatest mother in the world”.  She had an immense sense of humor and found joy in others laughing.  Mildred found pleasure in putting everyone else first and her desire was to make sure everyone had plenty of food and rest.

Survivors include her daughter Brenda Kenimer, Pensecola, FL; son and daughter-in-law David and Teresia Grizzle, Dawsonville; son Jeff Grizzle, Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law Chuck and Debbie Grizzle, Suches; grandchildren Dusty Kenimer, Patricia and Jason Sanford and Delaney Grizzle; great-granddaughters Dakota Kenimer and Jessie Burnett; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Dennis Craig Yeager, age 64, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, November 5, 2018.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Rosena Gogle Yeager; brothers Howard “Skip” Yeager and Thaddeus Theodore Yeager; and sister Roseanne Ralston.

He was a loving husband, father and “Pepaw”.  Dennis was unconditionally loved by his family and friends.  He loved to operate his heavy equipment.  One of his many joys was getting his hair cut with his grand boys.   Dennis’s favorite hobby was go-kart racing and his kart number was 2K.  He saw the checkerd flag on Monday and won his race of life.

William O. Hampel Jr. age 82 of Dahlonega passed away on March 6, 2019. Mr. Hampel was a longtime member of Maranatha Baptist Church and loved model trains and fishing.

Mr. Hampel is preceded in death by his first wife Edith Ray Hampel, second wife Brenda Holland Hampel; Survived by children, Bill Hampel, Carnesville, GA Paul (Tammy) Hampel, Dahlonega, GA; Alan (Lisa) Hampel, Dahlonega, GA; Michelle (James Tolbert) Hampel, Dahlonega, GA; Eric Hampel, Dahlonega, GA; Troy (Karen) Hampel, Gillsville, GA; and step son John C. Carol Ann Bowers

June 24, 1946 – February 13, 2019

Carol Ann Bowers, 72 passed away peacefully in her home on February 13, 2019. A celebration of her life will be 4PM, Saturday, February 23, 2019 in the Chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. She was born in Scranton, PA on June 24, 1946 to the late Daniel V. and Crystal L. Cordelli. Carol was a graduate of Richard Montgomery High in Rockville, MD. She started her career as a reservationist for United Airlines where she met her husband Daniel E. Bowers of 51 years. She went on to become a flight attendant and recently celebrated 52 years flying for Delta Airlines based out of Atlanta, GA. Carol was passionate about animals. She and her husband Daniel were active in the Dahlonega Animal Shelter and adopted 10 cats and dogs over the years. Her parents, two brothers, Ronald J and Daniel V. Cordelli, Jr (Kathy) predeceased her in death. She is survived by her husband Daniel Bowers, sister Melanie Page (Rocky), brother Gregory Cordelli, nieces Amber Cordelli, Amanda Cordelli and nephews Justin Cordelli and Gregory Cordelli, Jr. Carol and her family would like to thank Pam Wright for the loving care she provided to Carol through her illness.
