Cagle campaign brings out the big guns

Lt. Colonel Oliver North was met by large crowds as he hit the campaign trail supporting Casey Cagle in becoming Georgia’s next Governor.
Gainesville, Ga. – “There’s only one candidate who’s been endorsed. There’s only one candidate for Governor’s office who actually meets the standard of what we need and that’s Casey Cagle,” retired Lt. Colonel Oliver North enthusiastically spoke to the large crowd gathered in Gainesville, Ga. this weekend.
Lt. Governor Casey Cagle has been the center of controversy for several weeks after the release of a secret recording in which Cagle speaks candidly to former gubernatorial candidate Clay Tippins about politics over policy.
Regardless of this recent smear on Cagle’s bid to be Georgia’s next Governor, one fact remains and cannot be disputed, Cagle is the only candidate for governor in Ga. to receive the coveted endorsement from the National Rifle Association (NRA).
With this point being perhaps one of the largest differences between Cagle and his opponent, Brian Kemp, Cagle’s campaign decided it was time to bring out the “big guns”.
President elect of the NRA, North, hit the campaign trail with Cagle on July 14 making three stops across the state to share with constituents why Cagle is the only candidate that will uphold the values of the NRA.
“I’m here because there is only one candidate for governor who has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association,” North said explaining his stance on Georgia’s heated gubernatorial race.
According to North, Cagle has “sterling record as supporter of the Second Amendment”. North went on to say that Cagle “is going to make sure that your gun rights and others are going to be defended when he’s in office as your Governor.”
Doting on Cagle’s record of fighting for the rights of gun owners in Ga., North also brought attention to Cagle’s support of firearms manufacturing and the jobs that have created in this field.
“He’s created the best, pushed through the best legislation, I think, in the country for giving you the right to defend yourselves,” North was met with cheers from the large crowd as he presented Cagle’s record on the Second Amendment.
North added, “I’m just reassured by what he’s already done, and what he’s committed to do.”
Constituents also got a peek into the private life of North as he shared personal stories of how the fight to defend the Second Amendment hits close to home threatening a long standing family tradition.

North, grandfather to 17 grandchildren, shared this tradition, “I get to give them a present. The only present I get to give them. Everything else comes from Betsy (wife) and me.”
This present given by North when each child turns 14 is a box containing three items, a Bible, a map and compass, and a 20 gauge shotgun.
North labels each box with “There are three things in this box that you have got to learn how to use, and if you do learn to use all three things, you’ll never go hungry, you’ll never be lost and you need fear nothing, but you have to learn to use all three.”
Each child is then told to read Proverbs, one Proverb per day for a month. After this task is completed and understood, North teaches the children how to use the compass and map. The final item that the child can then master is the use of the shotgun.
North told of how each child must learn to take apart, put together and clean the firearm before they can tackle the task of learning to shoot.
A bonding experience for a grandfather and a grandchild, one which his family holds dear, North joked, “The kids call me by my first name…Colonel.”
But according to North this tradition is threatened and he pointed to the fact that a couple of states have already passed laws where it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to possess or purchase a firearm.
Speaking of Virginia, the Lt. Colonel’s current state of residence, North said, “If that happens in Virginia, you know where I’m moving? I’m moving right here.”
North concluded his endorsement with a request, “I want each one of you, if you would please, go out and find a family member and a co-worker and a neighbor and a friend. So now you’re talking four of each one that you know that’s not here today and get them to the polls on the 24th of July so that this man….”.
Upon saying this North turned to Cagle and was drowned out by cheers from the audience.
Cagle briefly shared his thoughts on North’s personal endorsement: “I just value, not only what he has done in his life but also what he is doing by standing up for the Second Amendment.”
Referring to North as a good friend and speaking of the encouragement that North has given him, Cagle simply added, “This man is a real patriot.”

Georgians begin early voting next week

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Advanced voting for the July 24 General Primary runoff starts Monday, July 2 and will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. until July 20 with the exception of July 4 when all county offices are closed. All votes can be cast at the Lumpkin County Elections Office, 56 Short Street.
Most elections offices around the state are bracing for a larger-than-usual runoff turnout because important state offices remain undecided. Republicans are still seeking their party’s nomination for governor, lieutenant governor and secretary of state.
Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp are seeking the Republican nomination to replace two-term Governor Nathan Deal. The winner will face Democrat Stacey Abrams in the November general election.

Cagle won 39 percent of the vote in the primary to Kemp’s 25.6 percent. But the margin was not as large as it may have appeared because there were five candidates who split the vote. The candidate who wins the runoff will be the one who has more success attracting voters who cast a ballot for Clay Tippins or Hunter Hill.
In the race for Lt. Governor, David Shafer and Geoff Duncan are competing for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Democrat Sarah Riggs Amico in November.
Another key race that should help attract voters is the secretary of state race between Republicans Brad Raffensperger and David Belle Isle. John Barrow has already secured the Democratic nomination.
The local race that should attract voters is the race for the District 4 seat on the Board of Commissioners between Republicans Clarence Grindle and Jeff Moran.

GA State Senator, (R) Josh McKoon, has announced he will be running for Secretary of State in the upcoming election. In his interview this morning McKoon states that one of his primary focuses will be to safeguard the state’s future elections. He believes that because the voting machines are due to be replaced soon that if up to him he would consider going back to the optical scan type of voting machines rather than the electronic ones used now. This would lessen the chances of malfunctions, data issues and hacking abilities. Senator McKoon, if elected would like to work more with small business owners and individuals with aspirations of starting their own company. Lastly McKoon states if elected, he would like to implement an open online database where the tax payers can go to this site and see exactly how their tax money is being spent.

Pro-English voters should ask questions

A December 2015 Rosetta Stone poll showed that a bipartisan 76% of Georgians support making English Georgia’s constitutional official language. The idea is English as official, not “English only” as goes the portrayal by dishonest opponents.
Policy differences for candidates in the race for Georgia governor may not extend to allowing Georgia voters to decide if the state constitution should be amended to make English the official language of government.
According to an AJC report last week, Democrat candidate Stacey Abrams promised to oppose constitutional official English in the General Assembly as governor and boasted of fighting against allowing voters to answer a ballot question when she was in the legislature.
We thought it surprising that the AJC did not include a quote or position from Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp on the voter-popular issue, so Wednesday, October 3, this writer sent a policy question and request for a quote to the Kemp campaign.

“Do you support allowing Georgia voters to decide on a ballot question that would amend the state constitution to make English the official language of Georgia government and which would end current practice of offering the written road rules portion of the DDS drivers license exam in (eleven) foreign languages?
If so, will you use the power of the governor’s office to promote that cause for the 2020 election?”
We have not received a response from candidate Kemp. Curious voters should ask him.
All concerned should be aware that Georgia has a 1996 statute in place that makes English the official language, but also says officials can ignore that directive:
“State agencies, counties, municipal corporations, and political subdivisions of this state are authorized to use or to print official documents and forms in languages other than the official language, at the discretion of their governing authorities.”
The concept of allowing voters to have a voice on the matter is quite popular in the Georgia senate. Introduced by state Senator Josh McKoon, in 2016 SR 675 passed the Georgia senate with every Republican member voting “YEA,” But it was not allowed a vote on the House floor.
McKoon’s Resolution created a ballot question voters would have considered that year which read:
“Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended so as to provide that English is the official language of the State of Georgia?”
All persons desiring to vote in favor of ratifying the proposed amendment shall vote “Yes.”
All persons desiring to vote against ratifying the proposed amendment shall vote “No.”
If such amendment shall be ratified as provided in said Paragraph of the Constitution, it shall become a part of the Constitution of this state.”
Most conservatives would like to have the chance to answer that question in November, 2020.
Readers who are not closely involved in Gold Dome politics are likely asking why they have not already been permitted to vote on making official English part of the state constitution. It helps to know that the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce are vehemently opposed to that idea.
It may also help to know that in metro-Atlanta’s DeKalb School District alone, administrators are dealing with students from 180 different countries who speak 140 different languages.
Without a constitutional mandate that English is the official language of government, readers can make their own predictions on how long it is before the angry marches in the streets begin with the demand that government in Georgia accommodate every imaginable language with the cry that “diversity is our strength.”
It seems like something a Republican candidate for Georgia governor would comment on. Comprende?

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – Secretary of State of the U.S. State of Georgia and Republican Governor hopeful Brian Kemp accused the Lieutenant Governor of Georgia Casey Cagle of a political stunt and pandering for endorsements.
As the the Georgia Gubernatorial race heats up so do the accusations and claims of who really represents the people and who is running a self-serving campaign.
One such accusation came earlier this week as Kemp sent an email to top NRA lobbyist Christopher Cox telling Cox that the NRA has been “Casey Cagled”.
On Feb. 26 Cagle released a tweet firmly stating, “”I will kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with @NRA.”
Cagle then added, “Corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back.”
A mere two days later, a state Senate committee removed the jet fuel perk from the broad tax bill, and on March 1, the Senate passed a tax bill, with a 44-10 vote that still eliminated this jet fuel tax break.
According to Kemp’s letter, Cagle’s Tweet and the action taken in the state Senate are nothing more than a political show: “That sounds real good. But there’s one big problem with it. The NRA is getting played.”
Recent legislation passed by both the House and the Senate of Georgia paint a different picture of Cagle’s true stance, according to Kemp.
Kemp urged the NRA to look into HB930: “Please have your team review HB930 from this past legislative session. It passed on the last day (aka Sine Die). It is a legislative package to expand mass transit in Georgia, especially in the metro Atlanta area in which Hartsfield-Jackson Airport is located. ”
As promised by Cagle, this bill does not include the jet fuel tax break that Delta Airlines had hoped to recieve, but it does include a tax break of another kind that could greatly benefit the airline company.
Kemp claims the new legislation grants airlines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport an exemption from a local transportation sales tax, known as Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST).

“As those of us involved in Georgia politics like to say…..you’ve been “Casey Cagled”. He tells you one thing while cutting secret deals to help Delta down the line,” Kemp stated of his opponent.
Cagle’s campaign manager Scott Binkley replied to these alligations, “The only way this helps Delta is if it lands a 747 in Gwinnett or Cobb County regional airports.”
The Cagle campaign says that the legislation only extends exemptions for sales tax on jet fuels if Cobb and Gwinnett counties were to raise sales tax to join MARTA. According to Cagle’s campaign this in no way affects the Delta Hub located in Clayton County.
With Cagle tweeting one agenda and passing another, Kemp feels that there is only one conclusion: “The facts are the facts. Delta benefits in the near future from this legislation that Cagle supported.”

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp visit Dahlonega Tuesday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. –The Wagon Wheel restaurant is a popular gathering spot, especially with locals who enjoy good southern-style cooking and hot political talk. There is sure to be plenty of both starting Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 a.m. when Secretary of State Brian Kemp brings his campaign for governor to town.
Kemp is on what he calls his “Putting Georgians First Bus Tour,” which has him making stops in 50 counties in 10 days. The tour started Monday with stops in Clarke, Madison, Jackson, Barrow, Walton and Morgan counties.
Kemp, who announced his campaign for governor in March 2017, served in the Georgia Senate from 2002-2006. He has been the state’s top election official since he was appointed in 2010 by then Governor Sonny Perdue.
He was a key architect in the structuring of the SEC primary where voters in six southern states went to the polls on March 1, 2016, for the presidential preference primary.
On his campaign website, Kemp has pledged to “fundamentally transform state government, take a chainsaw to job-killing, anti-growth regulations, stand firm against healthcare reform that punishes small business owners, give rural communities the same opportunities as Metro Atlanta, defund sanctuary cities and campuses” and stop taxpayer-funded subsidies for illegal immigrants.
Following his visit to Lumpkin County, Kemp will visit Fannin, Gilmer, Whitfield and Walker counties on Tuesday.

Lumpkin County votes for Kemp, Duncan, Raffensperger; Moran elected to Board of Commissioners

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – In Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff, Jeff Moran has defeated Clarence Grindle in the race for Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners Post 4. Moran will now turn his attention to the November 6 general election where he will face Democrat Teresa Gay.
Moran, a U.S. Army veteran and Junior ROTC instructor at Lumpkin County High School, received 1,893 votes to Grindle’s 1,172.
Lumpkin County also proved to be Brian Kemp country as the Republican Secretary of State easily defeated Lt. Governor Casey Cagle 2,030 to 1,191 in the race for governor.
Republican State Senator Geoff Duncan of Forsyth County was the favorite among Lumpkin County voters. Duncan defeated David Shafer 1,571 to 1,476.
Brad Raffensperger defeated David Belle Isle in the Republican primary race for Secretary of State.
All results are unofficial until certified by the Elections Supervisor.

Grindle, Moran head for July runoff

DAHLONEGA Ga. – Lumpkin County voters went to the polls Tuesday and gave Republican Clarence Grindle the win by a razor-thin margin in the race for the open District 4 seat on the Board of Commissioners. However, there won’t be much time to celebrate as his victory over runner-up Jeff Moran was not enough to avoid a July runoff election.

Grindle received 1005 votes or 40.23 percent to Moran’s 956. Mark Zeller finished third with 537 votes. Now the challenge for both candidates will be to get their voters back to the polls for the runoff and an all-out effort to woo Zeller’s voters.
The winner of that race will still have some work to do before November when he will face Democrat Teresa B. Gay in the general election. Gay defeated Dennis Hoover 437 votes to 139.
Several candidates were unopposed. State Senator Steve Gooch (R-Dahlonega) did not have a primary challenger nor did District 3 County Commissioner Rhett Stringer or School Board members Lynn Sylvester and Craig Poore.
In the up ballot, statewide elections that drew most of the voters to the polls, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp will face a runoff. In a five-candidate field, Cagle won by a slight margin over Kemp by receiving 39 percent of the votes (227,170 total votes) to Kemp’s 26 percent or 150,051 total votes.
The winner of that race will face Democrat Stacey Abrams in the November General election. Abrams easily defeated her rival Stacey Evans, winning 76 percent of the vote statewide.
There will also be a runoff in the Lieutenant Governor’s race where David Shafer fell just shy of a clear win. Shafer pulled in a majority of the votes, 256,230, but it was not enough to avoid a runoff with Geoff Duncan in July. Duncan received 27 percent of the votes (140,741).
The winner of that runoff will face Democrat Sarah Riggs Amico in November. Amico pulled in 56 percent of the votes (245,325) defeating opponent Triana James who received 44 percent.
Campaigns have not ended for Brad Raffensperger or David Belle Isle as they will also face off in a November runoff for secretary of state. Raffensperger received 35 percent of the votes (178,502), moving him into top position. Belle Isle received 29 percent or 145,915 total votes.
Democrat John Barrow will face the winner of that runoff in November. Barrow was able to make a clean win with 52 percent over challengers Dee Dawkins-Haigler and Rakeim Hadley.

Casey Cagle receives NRA endorsement

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. – The National Rifle Association (NRA) announces its pick for Georgia’s next Governor, and released that the association would officially be backing Casey Cagle. Not all Republican candidates are happy with the NRA’s decision.

With more than 100,000 active members in the state of Georgia, the NRA’s endorsement is sure to pull some weight in the upcoming May General Primary.
Earning an A+ rating from the NRA for each year that he has served in office, this is not the first time that Cagle has been endorsed by the organization.
“Gun ownership is a right that Georgians take seriously, and the NRA endorsement is the gold standard in our state,” Cagle said explaining his enthusiasm for receiving this endorsement. “I’m an avid outdoorsman, and I taught all three of my boys how to hunt, shoot and respect firearms. That’s an American legacy that I want to see handed down to my grandchildren and to the generations that follow them.”
“I’m honored and excited to have the NRA’s support because its cause is one that I share and that I have fought for,” Cagle continued. “I’m a lifetime member of the NRA, and I’m proud of my unwavering record for the Second Amendment. Like the NRA, I believe the framers of the Constitution meant what they said when they wrote that the right to bear arms shall not be infringed.”
Having already received backing from Educators First and the Georgia Realtors, the NRA endorsement makes a third announcement of support for Cagle this week.
The NRA endorsement comes on the heels of Secretary of State of the U.S. State of Georgia and Republican Governor hopeful Brian Kemp sending an email to a top NRA lobbyist, Christopher Cox, concerning Cagle’s true allegiance to the organization.
In regards to Cagle’s stance on Delta Airlines and recent Georgia legislation passed, Kemp stated in the email, “The NRA is getting played.”
Kemp added, “As those of us involved in Georgia politics like to say…..you’ve been “Casey Cagled”.”
