PRESS RELEASE

DAHLONEGA – Late inning scoring was the key to victory for the University of North Georgia baseball team as they swept Saturday’s doubleheader against Georgia College.

GAME 1 – UNG 11, GC 10
North Georgia scored first in the first inning as Crews Taylor came home as the Bobcats tried to catch Tim Conway stealing second. Taylor doubled the Nighthawk lead in the third on a homer to make the score 2-0. After Georgia College scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, Riley Frost got the run back in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.

The Nighthawks pushed six runs across in the fifth on RBI singles from Conway, Kaleb FreemanJorge Arispuro and Will Hardigree to take a 9-1 lead, but the Bobcats responded with nine runs in the sixth to take a 10-9 lead. Hardigree tied the game in the seventh inning on a RBI single, while Frost pushed UNG in front in the eighth with a RBI single that proved to be the difference in the game.

Pete Weil (1-0) got the win in relief, tossing 3.2 innings of shutout baseball, punching out four.

GAME 2 – UNG 2, GC 1 (9 inn.)
Neither team could get the offense going until extra innings. The Bobcats started off the first extra inning in the eighth with a leadoff homer, but the Nighthawks answered in the bottom of the inning as Frost brought home the tying run on a chopper over the third baseman’s head.

After shutting down GC in the ninth, the Nighthawks loaded up the bases in the bottom of the ninth, setting up Frost for the walkoff single to right field to complete the series sweep.

Caleb Mitchell (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, pitching a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout.

NOTES
– This is the first time UNG has swept Georgia College in a season series since 2008 and the first time the Nighthawks have won a series against GC since 2015.

– Frost went 5-for-9 at the plate in the twinbill.
