UNG women’s tennis team wins PBC opener

DAHLONEGA – The No. 4 University of North Georgia women’s tennis team handed Lander a loss in their Peach Belt opener in a 6-1 win Saturday afternoon.
North Georgia dominated doubles play, winning 6-2 on the top two lines and 6-3 on the third line. Vaishali Jorge and Claudelle Labonté Frey took down the 25th ranked doubles duo nationally to clinch the point.
The Nighthawks continued the momentum into singles play, winning the first five matches to close, all in straight sets. Labonté Frey had the clinching point, winning in a tiebreak in the second set to give North Georgia their third PBC win of the season.
North Georgia will be back on the courts Tuesday in Columbus, Georgia, to take on Southern Arkansas. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
UNG sweeps pair from Lander

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The No. 15 University of North Georgia softball team claimed a pair of victories Saturday over Lander to complete the Peach Belt sweep of the Bearcats.
GAME 1 – UNG 7, LU 2
The Nighthawks jumped on top early, scoring four in the first on a bases loaded walk, a Hannah Forehand RBI double and a RBI groundout to take an early 4-0 lead. After Lander scored twice in the third, North Georgia answered by having Jolie Lester steal home in the fifth and take a 5-2 lead.
Lester would bring home the final two runs on a single in the sixth to get the game to its final score.
Delaney Heaberlin earned the win, throwing all seven innings and scattering five hits and a walk.
GAME 2 – UNG 3, LU 2
Lander was the first to score in the nightcap, using an infield single to plate a run in the first inning. All was quiet offensively until Olivia Sinquefield woke the bat up for a solo homer to center to tie the game 1-1 in the sixth.
After Madi Perry scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, Sinquefield plated UNG’s third run of the game on an infield single. Lander got a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Heaberlin worked out of it to get her second win of the day.
NOTES
– Haley Cummings went 3-for-5 on the day, while Lester went 3-for-7.
NEXT UP
North Georgia will battle AUM Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader.

Nighthawks fall in second half of doubleheader

GREENWOOD, S.C. – After jumping out to an early lead, the No. 25 University of North Georgia baseball team saw the advantage disappear as Lander won the second game of the series, 8-6, Saturday.
North Georgia loaded up the bases in the second inning and scored three runs in the frame. After scoring one on a double play, Connor Frost doubled and Justin Bailey singled to score two more and take a 3-0 lead. Lander answered by plating single runs in the second and third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Nighthawks would score again in the fourth on a Frost single to take a 4-2 lead, but the Bearcats responded in a big way, scoring two runs on both a double and a single to take a 6-4 lead. Kaleb Freeman got UNG back on the board in the fifth to trim the lead to one, but Lander would extend their lead out to 8-5 on a pair of Nighthawk errors in the sixth. Garrett Hollenbeck plated a run in the eighth on a single to center, but that was all they could muster.
NOTES
– Four Nighthawks combined for eight of UNG’s 11 hits.
– UNG had three doubles, one each from Freeman, Frost and Crews Taylor.
NEXT UP
The rubber match is set for 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.

UNG upsets No. 6 Lander, 49-40

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The 11th ranked University of North Georgia women’s basketball team won a defensive struggle at No. 6 Lander Saturday, 49-40, to complete the season sweep of the Bearcats.
North Georgia never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 6-0 lead and not looking back. Lander would cut the lead to two by the end of the first, but UNG stretched the lead back out to seven by halftime.
The Nighthawks continued to extend the lead in the third quarter to as many as 13, but the Bearcats made a 7-0 run that cut the UNG lead back to six before LU trimmed it down to as few as two again at the end of the third. North Georgia ran away late, hitting free throws and limiting turnovers to secure the win.
NOTES
– Caroline Martin led UNG with 14 points, while Jamari McDavid added 10. Julianne Sutton had eight points and 12 rebounds.
– The Nighthawks held Lander to just 1-for-16 from three point range.
– The regular season sweep is the first time that North Georgia has beaten Lander both regular season meetings since the 2017-18 season.

UNG men defeat Lander at Convocation Center

DAHLONEGA – After a sluggish start from both teams, the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team hit the first bucket of the game and never looked back on their way to a 67-59 win over Lander Saturday evening inside the Convocation Center.
Neither team could find the bottom of the net until Frank Champion hit back-to-back layups nearly two minutes into the contest. The Nighthawks continued to extend their lead in the first half, including finishing the period on a 10-0 run to take a 12 point lead to the locker room.
In the second half, North Georgia stretched the lead out to 18 points at 43-25 with just over 14 minutes to play before Lander started to inch back into the game. The Bearcats trimmed the lead down to as few as seven on a few occasions and six with under 30 seconds to play, but UNG held on to improve to 2-2 in league play.
NOTES
– For the second straight game, Eric Jones recorded a double-double, tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds. Champion led the way with 18 points, while Darnell Snyers scored 12 on four made shots from distance. Malik Hardy also claimed double digit points with 10.
– Kody Shubert pulled down 11 rebounds to go with his seven points and seven assists.
– North Georgia earned a +22 rebound margin, not allowing a Lander offensive rebound until the second half.

UNG women stun No. 3 Lander, 69-68

DAHLONEGA – The top-15 matchup did not disappoint as the No. 13 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team won an instant classic over No. 3 Lander in the latest chapter of the rivalry, 69-68, Saturday afternoon inside the UNG Convocation Center.
The Nighthawks jumped out to a 10-0 advantage early on and held on to the lead for much of the contest. At one point, UNG held a 34-20 lead midway through the second quarter before the Bearcats started to battle back.
Turning up the heat defensively, Lander inched back before finally taking their first lead of the contest with 5:16 to play at 61-60. With the game going back and forth for the final five minutes, the Bearcats, leading 68-64, surrendered the last five points to North Georgia, putting a seventh straight win on the board for UNG.
NOTES
– Despite fouling out of the game, Julianne Sutton led UNG in the points column, netting 19 points. Caroline Martin added 14, 12 of which came from the charity stripe where she finished the day perfect. Kayla Massop was a rebound short of a double-double off the bench, tallying 11 points and nine boards.
– UNG hit 20 out of their 22 made free throws with both misses coming in the final second of the game.
– The Nighthawks turned 20 Bearcat turnovers into 20 points.
NEXT UP
North Georgia will hit the road for the first time in 2022 with a Wednesday evening trot down to Clayton State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
