Tax Commissioner arrested on felony drug charges

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. – The Lumpkin County Tax Commissioner, Michael David Young, 57, was arrested yesterday on felony drug charges after he turned himself into the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office to ‘investigate allegations that Young was utilizing the influence of his office to obtain illegal drugs’.
Young is also a local pastor and ordained minister in Lumpkin County.
FYN also received a tip regarding the alleged process in exactly how Commissioner Young was able to utilize his office in order to obtain these illegal drugs.
We have reached out to Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard for more information regarding the above statement.
Although the GBI stated they were unable to establish the use of his office to obtain the drugs, the GBI did establish that Young was illegally obtaining and using prescription pills.
Young was given until yesterday to turn himself in to the Sheriff’s Office, where he was then booked and charged with possession of schedule II-controlled substance, use of communication facility to commit a felony and conspiracy to purchase controlled substances.
He has since been released on bond and awaiting trial which will be handled by the Enotah Judicial Circuit upon competition of the case.

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. –The Lumpkin County Tax Commissioner’s Office will reopen for limited in-person visits on Thursday, May 7, 2020. Only individuals who need to complete title transfers will be served. Please continue to process all other transactions on line. The Tax Commissioner’s Office hours are 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office is located in Suite E in the Administration Building, 99 Courthouse Hill, Dahlonega.
Access to the Administration Building will be through the North entrance (old library side). Patrons should be prepared to stand in line. Only ten (10) visitors will be allowed in the facility at a time and everyone will be required to maintain social distancing standards as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We ask that only one person per family enter the facility to complete the transaction.
