UNG rallies to 8-4 win over Valdosta St. in NCAA Division II Tournament

DENVER – Down 3-0 through four complete, the University of North Georgia softball team’s bats finally came alive as they eliminated No. 9 Valdosta State Friday, 8-4, at the 2021 NCAA Division II Softball Championship.
The Blazers got on the board in the first inning, taking advantage of a Nighthawk error to hit a two-run homer. VSU scored again in the fourth on a solo homer to take a 3-0 lead. North Georgia finally answered in the fifth, scoring their first two runs of the tournament on a Madison Simmons bomb to left field.
The Nighthawks took the lead in the sixth, loading the bases and pushing across a run on a Blazer error and two more on a Kaylyn Anthony single through the left side to make the score 5-3. North Georgia scored three more in the seventh on another Blazer error and a Shelby Hammontree RBI single to left. VSU scored one off a solo homer in the bottom of the frame, but that was all they could get.
NOTES
– Tybee Denton (4-3) earned the win in relief, allowing just one run off two hits over three innings of work.
– Valdosta State committed five errors in the game, leading to all eight runs being unearned.
– Madi Perry was 3-for-4 in the game to lead the way for UNG at the plate.

UNG wins Sunday double header in softball classic

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The No. 16 University of North Georgia softball team finished off the Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic with a sweep of Gannon and No. 8 West Chester Sunday afternoon at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Cottrell Park.
GAME ONE – UNG 10, GU 1
The Nighthawks started the scoring in the third inning, using RBI singles from Kaylyn Anthony and Shelby Hammontree to take a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, UNG kept the hot bats going, plating five in the frame. Madison Simmons had a RBI double that scored two before Anthony hit a bomb to push the lead to 8-0.
Gannon was able to scratch a run across in the fifth to avoid the run-rule, but North Georgia scored again in the seventh on a Madison Henry two-run homer that took the game to its final score.
Riley Patton (2-0) got the win, going four innings and striking out six.
GAME TWO – UNG 9, WCU 1 (6 inn.)
North Georgia wasted no time putting the No. 8 team in the nation away, scoring six in the opening inning. Kaylee Womack pushed the first run across on a RBI single. After loading the bases, Olivia Sinquefield drew a walk to double the lead before Cheyanne Mosteller hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead up to 3-0.
The Nighthawks then doubled the lead again on a Simmons single that was coupled with a Golden Ram error, making the score 6-0. UNG scored two more in the second inning on a Jenna Goodrich RBI double. West Chester got on the board in the next frame on a RBI triple to get to a 8-1 scoreline.
North Georgia was able to walk the game off in the sixth due to the run rule on a Sinquefield RBI single that scored Lexi Duncan.
Kylee Smith (4-1) earned the win, tossing four innings and striking out six.
NOTES
– In the first game of the day, No. 21 Southern Indiana beat West Chester, 5-2, in eight innings.
– Simmons went 4-for-6 on the day with four RBI and a run scored.

North Georgia travels to Barry on Thursday, starting a six-game Florida road swing.
