JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 24 University of North Georgia women’s golf team bested the field in the Jekyll-O-Lantern Intercollegiate, taking home the tournament title after a 296 in the final round, good for a tie for the third best 18-hole team score in program history.
Megan Sabol finished in second place with a 1-under 143 for the tournament, tying the fourth-best 36-hole total in UNG women’s golf history along the way. Sabol now holds each of the top five spots in the 36-hole scoring records.
The Nighthawks’ two-day total of 22-over 596 is the third best team total in a 36-hole event in program history as well. North Georgia shot five shots better than the field Tuesday to win by seven strokes over Montevallo. West Georgia finished in third place, followed by Columbus State and West Florida.
The win marks the fourth time in UNG’s history that the women bring home a tournament title, and it is the first time since the Full Moon BBQ Invitational in the fall of 2018 that the program has claimed first place.
Carson Roberts also earned a top 10 finish, coming in at a tie for ninth with a score of 6-over 150. Miranda Rich finished tied for 12th two shots back of Roberts while Alexis Whitney (t20, +11) and Karson Stone (t23, +12) also earned top 25 finishes in the 83-player field.

More UNG records fall at LeeAnn Noble Memorial tournament
Sports, University of North Georgia October 16, 2019
DAHLONEGA – Every program scoring record fell Tuesday as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team shot their lowest 18 and 36 hole scores in program history on their way to a runner-up finish at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial at Achasta Golf Club. Senior Megan Sabol also shattered the 18 and 36 hole individual records as she won individual medalist honors.
Sabol shot a 6-under 66 in the final round, two shots better than her previous program record set back in the Patsy Rendleman Invitational in 2017. Her tournament total of 9-under 135 is four better than her total in the same tournament, also the previous best in the record book.
After starting with bogey, Sabol went on to eight holes, including going 6-under on the back nine after an even front. Sabol’s 66 and 135 both broke the LeeAnn Noble Memorial individual scoring records as well.
As a team, the Nighthawks shot 1-under 287 for the final round, marking the first time in program history that the women’s golf program has had a team round under par, besting a 2-over performance at the 2018 Patsy Rendleman Invitational. The two-day total of 7-over 583 is 13 shots better than the program’s best from the same tournament.
Columbus State edged UNG for the win after a back-and-forth battle all day, setting a new tournament record for 18 and 36 holes with a 7-under 281 for Tuesday’s round and 6-over 582 for the tournament. No. 14 Lee finished in third, followed by Montevallo and Catawba.
Other top-finishers for North Georgia included Alexis Whitney in 11th, while Carson Roberts and Miranda Rich finished as part of a four-way tie for 12th.
The Nighthawks will wrap up the fall schedule with a trip to Jekyll Island, Georgia, in two weeks for the Jekyll-O-Lantern Intercollegiate.

DAHLONEGA – Megan Sabol finished in a tie for third individually as the University of North Georgia women’s golf team placed second in the Fourth Annual LeeAnn Noble Memorial at Achasta Golf Club. Lee set a new 18- (290) and 36-hole (586) record on the final day to finish as the tournament champion.
“I thought we played quite well,” said head women’s golf coach Leigh Anne Hunter. “I was very happy to get some wins over some regional opponents which are crucial at moving us up in the region rankings as we push toward the postseason.” The Nighthawks (605) finished one stroke ahead of Young Harris (606) for the tournament runner-up. North Georgia’s two-round score tied the program’s best set earlier this season at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational. Lenoir-Rhyne (617) and Lincoln Memorial (620) rounded out the top-five teams in the tournament. Sabol shot a three-over-par 147 in the tournament, finishing four strokes back of Lee’s Haverly Harrold for the individual title. Carson Roberts finished in a three-way tie for fifth at 148. North Georgia will next compete at the Newberry Fall Invitational on October 30-31 in Elgin, S.C. That tournament will serve as the end to the fall season. |
