Dist. 2 Commissioner Mayfield will run for re-election

News

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — Commissioner Bobby Mayfield has announced his intent to run for re-election to the Board of Commissioners District 2 Seat. He was elected in 2016 with an agenda of economic development along the highway 400 corridor. Since that time, the county has produced regulations that will ensure that any development on the corridor will reflect the spirit of our community and will provide a very appealing and “pleasing to the eye” experience for all who enter Lumpkin County from the south.

Among some of the accomplishments, he is most proud of during his term is the soon-to-be-built hospital at the end of the 400 corridor, extension of water to the county line, and a sewer system poised to be implemented. Commissioner Mayfield has also been instrumental in getting our new library constructed as well as in seeing the completion of a fire station that was approved by the voters over ten years ago.

During his tenure, Commissioner Mayfield has voted to lower the mill rate every single year and this past year voted to roll property taxes back an entire mil. It has been a goal of Commissioner Mayfield to grow our tax digest and, for the first time in years, the tax digest is indeed growing again.

When asked why he wanted to run again, Commissioner Mayfield was very direct – “Because there is more to do in the service of Lumpkin County, the job is not complete.” Mayfield stated that the Board of Commissioners is currently working on plans to build a swimming pool, expand park and rec facilities, upgrade some of our single lane roads, put more firefighters in more stations, and to continue to cut property taxes as our digest grows.

Commission Chairman Dockery will seek third term

News

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. – Lumpkin County Commission Chairman Chris Dockery today announced his intention to run for a third term.

PRESS STATEMENT

“After careful consideration and conversation with family and community members, I am announcing my candidacy for re-election as Chair of the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners.

“I am truly humbled by the encouragement that I have received almost daily over the past few months to continue to serve. We have accomplished many objectives over the past few years and I want to be a part of that continued momentum. I am proud to have been a part of completing several SPLOST projects mandated by the voters that were never completed due to budget constraints, These projects include expansion of water infrastructure, completion of Fire Station 7, creating new industry through the Development Authority and the soon to be completed Library.

“We have worked diligently to update our local land use codes as well as improve relationships with the City of Dahlonega. While the news of Chestatee Hospital’s closing was a devastating blow, we were able to bring the community together and with the help of our state lawmakers, find a solution for local health care. The result of these efforts have led to top quality health care provided by Northeast Georgia Health Systems with a commitment to start construction of a new hospital beginning summer of 2020.

“The recently passed Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax not only allowed us to lower the millage rate a full 1 mil, but also will allow funding for much needed road improvements, to include the joint project with the City of Dahlonega to improve the intersection of Hwy Bus 19N and Oak Grove Road.

“While there is still work to be done, we have enhanced fire protection by staffing more stations with funding through SAFIR grants. In cooperation with the City of Dahlonega, we replaced our ladder truck to provide much needed fire protection in and around the City. The list of accomplishments continues with the addition of the Splash Park through a partnership with the Dahlonega Sunrise Rotary, Expansion of the Senior Center with a Community Development Block Grant and much needed upgrades to various public works and road department equipment.

“The future for our community is bright. As demonstrated during my past two terms, it is important that we preserve what makes us unique while continuing to grow economically so Lumpkin County can prosper. I humbly ask for your support to allow me to continue to serve the best community that exists anywhere.”

David Miller to run for re-election – Lumpkin County Commission

Election, News

***PRESS RELEASE***

After much prayerful consideration and encouragement from family and friends, I have decided to run
for re-election in District 1 of the Lumpkin County Commission. Over the past several years we have
seen the successful completion of many things. First, the establishment of Northeast Georgia Medical
Center – Lumpkin. Quality and accessible health care is critical for the citizens of any community and we
were at risk of losing both emergency services and inpatient medical beds. The plans for a new facility
on the Gateway Corridor on GA400 will be a needed shot in the arm for our local economic
development and provide an opportunity for our children to work and stay here in Lumpkin County. As
Chair of the Lumpkin County Board of Health and member of the Northeast Georgia Health System
Advisory Board, I know what it will take to maximize the opportunity this presents and will work towards
ensuring we have quality healthcare in Lumpkin County for decades to come. The #LUMPKINMATTERS
community grant has shown all the wonderful opportunities we have for the care of friends and
neighbors through our numerous non-profit organizations. We have also completed the long awaited
Frogtown Fire Station and were successful in our application to the state for staffing through the SAFER
grant. The citizens entrusted us with the passage of the T-SPLOST which will see much needed road
improvements and a much safer intersection at Oak Grove Road. Last, but certainly not least, we have
been able to continue the numerous services provided by the county – and last year, rollback the tax
rate by a full 1 mill. We have established a good working relationship with the city and will have a
wonderful opportunity over the next 4 years to continue the positive changes we have seen. As a small
business owner, I know the challenges that exist in the current economic environment and will work
towards three goals; 1) Maximize the opportunities created by the Gateway Corridor – both in terms of
business opportunities and jobs for our friends and family, 2) Continue to grow the “Wine, Weddings
and Song” theme to preserve the rural nature of the unincorporated areas, while at the same time
providing opportunity for quality economic growth, 3) Finally. emphasize workforce development with
the school system and current employers to enable our children to have the skill sets necessary for them
to stay in our community. Finally, it is an honor to have the endorsement of both Commission Chairman
Chris Dockery and City of Dahlonega Mayor Sam Norton. I covet your support in the primary election on
May 19. Let’s keep Lumpkin County moving in the right direction.

*Currently, Professor of Healthcare Administration in the School of Business at Brenau University in
Gainesville and owner of a real estate and consulting firm, MPA Holdings, LLC. Dr. Miller is the Vice Chair
of the Board of Commissioners and Chair of the Lumpkin County Board of Health. He is also on the
Board of Enotah-CASA, Northeast Georgic Health System Advisory Board and the Sunshine Rotary. In his
spare time, he runs trails (you can often see him at the Lumpkin County Reservoir), plays golf and has
recently been in a production at the Historic Holly Theater. Being married to his wife for 35 years and
the father of two adult children, he knows what assets a stable family life brings to any community.
