UNG women’s soccer seniors announced to All-Peach Belt Conference team

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG women’s soccer seniors Renee VanHorn and Asa Thorsen were picked to the All-Peach Belt Conference First Team. The announcement was made at the tournament banquet on Thursday night.

VanHorn finished in fourth place in the league with 12 goals on the season. She added three assists as well to total 27 points. Six of her 12 goals were game winners.
Thorsen put two goals in the back of the net and assisted on three others this season as a key player in the midfield for the Nighthawks. VanHorn and Thorsen were two of just four players on UNG’s side to play and start in all 16 matches this season.

Megan Sabol tied for third in top five finish

A press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department explained that UNG junior, Megan Sabol, is now tied for third place after the UNG women’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury held on Tuesday.
Sabol scored a one-under 71, and the Nighthawks broke the single round scoring record by eight strokes in the final round with a two-over 290.
Sabol’s two-under 142 put her in a tie for third and All-Tournament honors, as well as the second best 36-hole score in program history. She finished two strokes behind Lenoir-Rhyne’s Abbey Hartsell for the lead. Sabol finished with eight birdies in the event, including birdieing three of the four par fives on the course in the final round.
The Nighthawks posted a 596 in the event, which is the best 36-hole score in program history, beating the Battle at Old South result from earlier this season by five strokes.
Jordyn Sims also scored, with a two-under round of 70, which tied her for second all-time in a single round with Sabol and Karson Stone. Sims had three birdies in Tuesday’s round to improve 11 strokes from the first to the second round.
Division II Sets Make-A-Wish Fundraising Bar Led by UNG’s Record Donation

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of North Georgia raised more money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2015-16 than any other NCAA Division II school, the NCAA released earlier this week. UNG set a new record with $34,000 raised, bettering its own mark of $21,413 in 2013-14.
North Georgia is currently in the early stages of its 2016-17 Make-A-Wish fundraising campaign that will culminate on Monday, Mar. 27 with the 2nd Annual Run with Nigel Run/Walk on the Dahlonega campus.
Earlier this year, the Nighthawk Nation hosted Alexis Mendoza as a member of the UNG women’s soccer team, marking the school’s fifth consecutive on-campus hosting of a Wish child.
Division II schools raised more than $608,000 for Make-A-Wish during the 2015-16 academic year, marking the fifth consecutive year the division has set a fundraising record.
The division has raised more than $4.7 million for Make-A-Wish since beginning its partnership with the nonprofit 13 years ago. Those funds have been used to grant more than 590 wishes for children around the country who face life-threatening medical conditions.
The Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee established the partnership with Make-A-Wish in 2003 and continues to drive the division-wide initiative. SAAC continued a model adopted last year in which money collected from championship and enforcement fines are added to institutional fundraising totals to allow institutions the opportunity to host a wish reveal party on campus. In 2015-16, five schools raised above the national average cost of a wish reveal – $9,500 – and automatically earned a wish reveal party. For an additional 21 schools, which all raised $5,000 or more, SAAC will award money from the fines to help them meet the minimum fundraising requirement for a wish reveal.
“The fundraising effort for Make-A-Wish is so important because it provides SAAC and Division II athletes the chance to realize the positive impact they can have in someone’s life,” said Christopher Pike, a former football student-athlete at Gannon University and former Division II SAAC chair. “Division II SAAC couldn’t be more pleased with this year’s Make-A-Wish efforts, and we continually hope that we as a division can keep raising the bar because together we are making a huge difference.”
UNG Athletics Make-A-Wish Quick Facts
Since 2010, UNG has raised over $107,000 for Make-A-Wish, having raised at least $10,000 in every year since 2010-2011, meaning more than 10 wishes have been granted from the efforts of the Nighthawk Nation.
UNG’s donation of $34,000 after the 2015-16 season marks the highest ever single-season donation by a NCAA Division II school.
North Georgia has finished in the top five NCAA Division II donors for six consecutive years, including being the top donor on four occasions.
UNG has won the PBC’s Make-A-Wish Award, named after former UNG student-athlete LeeAnn Noble, for five consecutive years.
UNG has hosted five consecutive Make-A-Wish events on campus with coverage by ESPN3 and WSBTV Channel 2 (Atlanta).

North Georgia Leads PBC Commissioner’s Cup Race After Fall Sports

AUGUSTA, Ga. | With all of the league’s fall sports completed, the University of North Georgia holds the lead in the Peach Belt Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings, announced on Wednesday morning by the league office. The Nighthawks earned 31.5 out of a possible 36 total points for an .875 percentage, nearly 100 points higher than second-place Flagler College. Augusta University is in third with Columbus State fourth and Montevallo fifth.
PBC Commissioner’s Cup ratings are determined by taking the maximum number of points available to each school, depending on how many sports each has, and dividing by the number of points won, based on conference finish through the regular season (except golf and cross country which are based on championship results).
The Commissioner’s Cup will be presented to the best overall athletic program at the league’s annual meetings in late May.
North Georgia finished no lower than second in any of the three PBC fall championships they compete in. The women’s soccer team was tied for second in the regular-season standings while the men’s soccer team had their best finish in the PBC in a three-way tie for second. The women’s cross country team also turned in a second-place finish at the PBC Championships.
A year ago, UNG was atop the standings following the fall of 2015, but slid to an overall finish of a tie for sixth out of 14 schools.
In 2014-15, UNG finished third in the PBC Commissioner’s Cup standings, marking the highest in school history for the 13-sport Nighthawk athletic department since becoming full-fledged members in the 2005-06 season.
