Lumpkin Co. advances to Region 7-3A semifinals

The Lumpkin Co. Indians defeated the Gilmer Bobcats and the White Co. Warriors to advance to the Region 7-3A semifinals. The Indians won both matches 2-0 in the tournament that was hosted at White Co. high school.

The 5th seed Indians played the 4th seed Bobcats in the first round of the region tournament. The first set started off with the teams trading scores. Neither team gained any separation on the scoreboard until Lumpkin Co. used a 7-0 run to take a 15-7 lead. The remainder of the set remained close at Lumpkin won 25-20. The second set went similarly to the first. It started off close with Lumpkin gaining an 8-7 advantage before the Indians won 17 of the final 22 volleys to win the set 25-12 and the match 2-0.

After advancing to the next round, the Indians faced off against the top-seeded White Co. Warriors. The entire match had an intense playoff atmosphere as both teams scored back and forth. A 5-0 run by the Indians helped give them an 18-12 lead that they held onto to win the set 25-20. The second set was even more tightly contested than the first. A 5-0 run halfway through the set gave Lumpkin Co. an 11-5 lead. However, the Warriors fought hard and clawed their way back to make it a 21-20 game in favor of the Indians. After excellent volleys by both teams, Lumpkin Co. held on to win the set 25-23 and the match 2-0.

With the win, the Indians advanced to the Region 7-3A semifinals, where they will face Cherokee Bluff at 4 p.m. tomorrow at White Co. high school.

Senior #2 Isabel Davenport sets the ball aganst Rabun Co.

On Thursday, August 27th, the Lumpkin Co. Lady Indians (12-1, 1-0 Region 7-3A) celebrated their senior volleyball players. The athletes that were celebrated were:

#2 Isabel Davenport

#3 Savannah Phines

#8 Makenzie Caldwell

#18 Victoria Crotzer

The Lady Indians’ first match of the day was against the Rabun Co. Lady Tigers. The first set of the match was a back and forth affair. After trading points for most of the set, Lumpkin Co. took over. Tied at 15, the Lady Indians scored four straight points and outscored the Lady Tigers 10-3 to win the set 25-18.

The Lady Tigers came out firing in the second set. They jumped out to a quick 5-1 win. Lumpkin Co. responded with a 12-2 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Lady Indians followed that with a second 12-2 run to win the set 25-9 and win the match in a dominant fashion.

Lumpkin Co.’s second match of their senior night was against the Fannin Co. Lady Rebels. Both sets were full of runs from both teams. The Lady Indians struck first by jumping out to a 5-1 lead. The Lady Rebels nearly took the lead as they cut the Lumpkin Co. lead to only one. The Lady Indians responded with a 7-2 run to take a 15-9 lead. Fannin Co. stormed back again to make the score 17-15 before Lumpkin Co. scored the final eight points of the set to win it 25-15.

The Lady Indians picked up where they left off in the first set by starting the second set with a 8-0 run. Lumpkin Co. remained in control as they took a 20-10 lead. Fannin Co. made one final push with an 8-1 run as they forced the Lady Indians to take a timeout. The timeout proved to be effective as Lumpkin Co. finished out the set by scoring 4 of the final 5 points to win the set 25-19 and the match 2-0.

The Lady Indians’ next matches will be next Tuesday, as they take on West Hall and North Hall at North Hall high school.

Lumpkin County Indians Volleyball off to historic start

Head Coach Haley Dibble led the Lumpkin County Indians to their best season ever in her first season as head coach last year. In 2019, the team racked up a 22-21 overall record, and became the region runner-up. This year with coach Dibble at the helm, the Indians are poised to make a deep run into the playoffs if they stay at the pace they are on, as they are off to a historic start, posting a 10-1 record through their first 11 games. The Indians are riding a 9 game win streak heading into their next contest on Thursday night, where they face the Fannin County Rebels.

Seniors Reagan Spivey and Mackenzie Caldwell seem to be the heart and leadership of this team, leading hem on and off the court.

Juniors Addie Rucker and Kiersta Trammel are also playing a big part in the Lady Indians successful season.
