Body found in Chestatee River today has been identified
News April 17, 2019DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Alan Roach confirmed just moments ago that the body found in the Chestatee River around noon today has been positively identified as that of Belinda Butterfield, 34 years old of Canton.
Ms. Butterfield was reported missing Monday morning. Authorities said at the time that she had last been seen swimming in Tesnatee Creek, which flows into the Chestatee River.
Roach said a canoeist who read about the missing woman on social media found the body shortly before noon.
Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, White County Sheriff’s Office, Fire-EMS and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources conducted the recovery operation at noon today. The body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy.

Body discovered by canoeist in Chestatee River today

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Alan Roach reported that a canoeist discovered the body of an unidentified female just below the surface of the Chestatee River around noon today near Lewis Grindle Road in Lumpkin County.
Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, White County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were conducting a recovery operation at noon today.
The body was located below the area where authorities in both counties have been searching for 34-year-old Belinda Butterfield who was reported missing on Monday, April 15. Ms. Butterfield was last seen swimming in the waters of Tesnatee Creek in White County. The creek runs into the Chestatee River.

White County woman charged in shooting

CLEVELAND, Ga. — A White County woman is charged with shooting her neighbor following an argument that took place at 251 Backpacker Drive in the Tray Mountain community last Friday.
White County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the area of Tray Mountain in reference to a shooting. At the bottom of the mountain, they made contact with Leah Marie Sandusky, 42, who had been shot in the buttocks. She was transported by EMS to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Investigators learned that the alleged shooter, Tina Nix, 47, who lives at 800 Mule Branch Road, went to the victim’s residence and an argument started in the driveway. During that argument, Sandusky was shot in with a small caliber handgun.
According to the statements made by participants, the argument was over a misunderstanding between the victim and the offender’s husband.
Deputies along with Investigators located Nix at her residence where she was taken into custody. Early the next morning Investigators executed a search warrant at 800 Mule Branch Road in an attempt to recover the firearm that was used in the incident. The firearm was not located at that time, however, during the search, marijuana was found.
After investigators learned some additional information, a second search warrant was executed on the same residence on Monday, Sept. 9. During this search, the firearm was recovered.
Nix is charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes and possession of more than an ounce of marijuana.
William Christopher Nix, 56, was charged with possession of more than an ounce of marijuana.
Tina Nix is currently in custody with a $25,000 bond. The victim was treated at the hospital and released. The investigation is ongoing.

Deputies Arrest Man with Weapons and Heroin

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The report of a suspicious truck left abandoned with a dog inside led to a foot chase, an arrest and the confiscation of 19 grams of heroin and a sawed off shotgun Tuesday.
The incident began when a resident reported a Dodge pickup truck parked and seemingly abandoned on Chestatee Shoals Drive off Cavender Creek Road. The truck was parked on the single-lane in a way that caused other vehicles to have to drive off the road to get around it.
The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office who responded contacted the owner by phone and learned the truck had been taken under suspicious circumstances.
While the deputy was investigating, another vehicle arrived and stopped further down the road. As the deputy drove towards the vehicle, he spotted a male walking down the road carrying a bag that was discovered to contain a sawed off shotgun, 19 grams of heroin and a pistol.
Deputies with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office, Georgia State Patrol and White County Sheriff’s Office participated in the foot pursuit that resulted in 27-year-old Steven Smith.
UPDATE: Smith has been charged with multiple felonies, including possession of a certain type of prohibited weapon, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, sale and manufacture of a controlled substance and criminal use of an article with altered identification. He is also charged with one misdemeanor, possession of drug related objects.

White, Lumpkin authorities search for missing woman
News April 17, 2019DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lt. Alan Roach in the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office issued the following press release:
On April 15 at approximately 6 a.m. The White County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service involving a missing person near the White/Lumpkin County line on Sandy Flats Road and Dugas Road. Once on scene, The White County Sheriff’s Office requested The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office to assist with the call. The missing person is 34-year-old, Belinda Butterfield from Canton Georgia. Belinda was last seen wearing white shorts and a pink tank top swimming in the waters of the Tesnatee creek in White County. This creek runs into the Chestatee River.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources also assisted with this call and will be conducting future searches from the air along the waterways and shoreline associated with this incident. These flights will continue until the Georgia DNR feels that they are no longer needed. Please if anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact Inv. Lumpkin County Man Apparently Shoots Himself Following Standoff With Police

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — A Lumpkin County man allegedly shot himself to death this morning after a tense standoff with White County and Lumpkin County law enforcement officers.
The incident began shortly after 7:15 this morning when White County authorities attempted to serve a bench warranty on Roy Carr of 1036 Rock House Road in Lumpkin County for failure to appear in court on theft charges out of White County.
Carr immediately barricaded himself, his wife and two children inside the home and refused to surrender. He repeatedly went in and out of the residence brandishing a gun and threatening to shoot officers. The White County officers called Lumpkin County officers to the scene at approximately 7:20.
Shortly thereafter, the wife and children were allowed to leave the residence unharmed. Lumpkin County officers quickly escorted the wife and children out of the area to safety. A single gunshot was heard from inside the residence and when officers made entry, the found Carr located just inside with a single gunshot to the head.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was contacted and asked to investigate the incident.
