Four Nighthawks Named NFCA All-Region

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced the 2017 NFCA Division II All-Region teams with the No. 3 University of North Georgia placing five players on the honor roll which was the most in the Southeast and tied for the fifth-highest total of any team in the nation. Kylee Smith, Sydney Sprague and Stephanie Hartness were all named to the first team while Alishia Frierson was tabbed a second team honoree.

The first team All-Region honor is the second consecutive for Hartness as a Nighthawk. The All-Conference first team selection currently leads UNG in batting at .429 and sits atop the Peach Belt Conference in slugging percentage by more than 40 points.

Smith led the Peach Belt in earned run average, strikeouts, and wins en route to a first team All-Conference selection. The freshman, who went is 27-4, was named the PBC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Sprague was a second team All-Conference selection and currently leads the team in homeruns with 13 to go along with her .371 batting average.

Frierson joined Sprague as a second team All-Conference honoree and is the Nighthawks’ second leading hitter with a .382 average with 16 doubles.

This year’s All-Region squads are comprised of 210 student-athletes from 116 programs.

The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s eight regions with first and second team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to the 2017 NFCA Division II All-American squads.

The 2017 NFCA Division II All-American teams will be announced on Wednesday, May 24 at the NCAA Division II National Championship Banquet in Salem, Va.
