LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — Republicans won the battle for two U.S. Senate seats in Lumpkin County Tuesday but may have lost the war to maintain control of the Senate.
In Lumpkin County Republican Sen. David Perdue defeated challenger Jon Ossoff 10,300 to 1,734 and Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler outpolled Rev. Raphael Warnock, 9,370 to 1,765. The outcome was small consolation for the statewide results.
Late in the evening Perdue held what appeared to be a commanding lead of about 118,000 votes but that was before 171,000 votes in heavily Democratic DeKalb had been counted. When they were, the lead evaporated.
At 5 a.m Wednesday, Ossoff led Perdue 2,208,717 to 2,192,347 and led Loeffler 2,227,296 to 2,172,866 with 99 percent of all precincts reporting. Although Warnock declared victory, the Perdue vs. Ossoff race was too close to call. However, most of the remaining votes appear to be in heavily controlled Democrat counties.
