Lady Indians Headed To Second Straight State Championship

Macon, Ga- The Lumpkin County Lady Indians will be headed to Macon for the second time in as many years. The 26-4 Lady Indians throttled Cavalry Day in their Final Four matchup this past weekend, defeating the Cavaliers by a score of 78-31.
As has been the case all year long, seniors Kate Jackson, Mary Mullinax, Lexi Pierce, and junior Averie Jones led the charge for the Lady Indians vs Cavalry Day. The quartet was responsible for all but 7 of the teams 78 points in the Final Four matchup.
On their quest to repeat as champions, the Indians will face off against a Hebron Christian team that has been terrorizing it’s opponents all year long. The Lions will enter the game on Friday with an unblemished 31-0 record, and having outscored opponents by over 1,200 points. But, while the Lions may be mighty, they’ll be facing a team that has one thing you can’t teach: UNITY.
Lady Indians Head Coach David Dowse has preached all year long about his team being a family, and that was evident last weekend vs Cavalry Day.
Dowse said in an AJC interview post-game: “These girls have been playing together so long. “when you have a senior come on the floor who doesn’t play that much and she scores two baskets and our bench erupts when we are up 50 points, that’s family.”
While the journey to another state championship has not been an easy one, the Indians have made the most of their bumps along the way and have turned regular season bruises into post-season beauty.
While they were unable to repeat as Region 7AAA tournament champions and enter the state tournament as the 1 seed again, ending their regular season on a loss in that Region title game vs Wesleyan could have been the best thing to happen to this team.
Since that loss, the Purple and Gold have won 4 straight playoff games by a combined score of 279-158.
While Lumpkin will certainly be underdogs heading into Friday State Championship game, don’t count them out just yet. This is a team that has proven time and time again they are up for any challenge, and they’ll look to slay Goliath once again.

Jackson Hits Go Ahead Bucket With :30 Left To Help Lumpkin County Capture First Ever State Championship

Macon, Ga- Lumpkin County and Greater Atlanta Christian found themselves in a stalemate with 38 seconds left to go in the GHSA AAA Women’s State Championship, but a Kate Jackson layup put Lumpkin ahead 49-47, and allowed the Indians to capture their first EVER State Championship!
Greater Atlanta Christian led for 28 of the 32 minutes of gameplay in the State Championship bout with Lumpkin, and it looked like they were going to cruise to their 10th State Championship crown. But David Dowse and his Lumpkin County Lady Indians thought otherwise.
Sophomore Averie Jones scored 8 straight points late in the fourth for the Lumpkin and gave her squad their first lead of the game. Greater Atlanta Christian tied things up with less than a minute to go in the game, but a Kate Jackson layup off of an incredible in-bound pass was the game winning bucket for the Lumpkin County Indians.
The Spartans did a pretty good job bottling up Region 7AAA player of the year Mary Mullinax, holding her to only five points and 7 assists, but the other Lady Indians picked her up. Averie Jones led all scorers with 17 points, while Kate Jackson and Lexi Pierce also broke into double digits for the Indians scoring 15 and 12 respectively. Jackson also had 13 rebounds on the night.
Lumpkin Lady Indians Off To 4-1 Start, Ranked #1 in AAA

The Lumpkin County Lady Indians are living up to the preseason hype around their team. Sometimes all the pressure from high expectations can make it hard for a team to go out there and ball, but Head Coach David Dowse and his team are only worried about the next game ahead of them, not that number 1 ranking.
The Lady Indians opened up their season with big wins over Flowery Branch and Morgan County, but stumbled against Buford, who is regarded as one of the top teams in the state of Georgia- regardless of classification.
They got back to their winning ways the next week against St. Pius and Union County however, and are currently outscoring opponents 303-202.
They’ve been getting contributions from most of their roster as the season has progressed. In the win over Flowery Branch, Kate Jackson led the way with 17 points, while Mary Mullinax was right behind her with 16. The next game against Morgan County, Mary Mullinax dropped 26, while Averie Jones and Lexi Pierce poured in 18 and 17, respectively. It’s impressive the way this team is able to distribute the basketball and get everyone on the court involved in the scoring.
The Lady Indians have a tough stretch coming up, with games against East Forsyth, Dawson County, and Murphy (NC) this week. This week, we should really see Lumpkin round out into form and sharpen up before they get into the meat of their Region schedule.
