Baseball Players Continue Success on the Field in Summer Leagues

DAHLONEGA – Fresh off a run to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, many University of North Georgia baseball players continued their seasons in summer leagues throughout the southeast. Today, we take a look throughout the summer leagues and the professionals to check in on how the summer has been going for these players.

North Georgia has four players playing professionally, while nine returning players and three incoming players are competing in summer leagues.

PROFESSIONALS
Brandon Agar – Great Falls Voyagers
Agar has had a great start to the 2017 season, posting a 2-1 record in seven starts. He has struck out 19 batters to just six walks with a 4.31 ERA in 39.2 innings of work on the mound.

Connor Hoover – Arizona League Mariners
After getting drafted in the 21st round by Seattle, Hoover immediately jumped into play and has made a huge impact. In addition to his .297 batting average, he has three doubles, a triple, a homerun and eight runs batted in. He has also posted a .545 on-base percentage.

Chris Rearick – Tulsa Drillers
Rearick has been in the pros since he was drafted by Tampa Bay back in 2010. This year, Rearick is 0-1 in five starts for Tulsa. He has 19 strikeouts over 23.1 innings of work.

Sam Tidaback – Boise Hawks
Tidaback has had a great start to 2017 behind and at the plate. He is currently hitting .314 with eight runs scored. He also had a double, three homers and eight RBI.

RETURNING PLAYERS
Kyler Allen – Florida Collegiate Baseball League – DeLand Suns
Playing in half of the Suns’ games, Allen is currently hitting .152 with three runs scored. He has recorded two doubles and five RBI at the plate as well.

Logan Burt – Sunbelt Baseball League – Norcross Astros
In four relief appearances, Burt has been a strikeout machine, recording 14 strikeouts in 9.2 innings of work to just two walks. He has recorded a save and a 4.65 ERA.

Connor Corbitt – Valley Baseball League – New Market Rebels
Corbitt has continued his success from the 2017 season by hitting .322 in VBL action this year. He has eight doubles, two homers, 22 runs scored and 21 RBI.

Jake Howard – Coastal Plain League – Savannah Bananas
Howard is another Nighthawk that is hitting over .300 in summer league play. Hitting .320 at the plate, he has also notched two doubles and six RBI.

Kyle Luigs – Valley Baseball League – New Market Rebels
In six appearances, five of which were starts, Luigs is 1-2 with a 2.05 ERA. Luigs has struck out 19 batters over 29.1 innings on the mound.

William Mapes – Sunbelt Baseball League – Alpharetta Braves
Mapes has found his way onto the base paths quite a lot this summer. Currently, he is hitting .265 with 10 runs scored, two doubles, a triple and three RBI.

Parker Morrison – Sunbelt Baseball League – Alpharetta Braves
Morrison has been used mostly in relief appearances for Alpharetta, but he does have two starts in his seven appearances this summer. He has 20 strikeouts to just seven walks in 15.2 innings pitched.

Andres Perez – Coastal Plain League – Lexington County Blowfish
In 17 games, Perez is hitting .154 with four runs scored, a homer and six RBI. He has committed just one error in 120 chances behind the plate this summer for the Blowfish.

Joshua Profit – Sunbelt Baseball League – Norcross Astros
Profit is using his quickness on the bases to help the Astros this summer, legging out two triples so far. He his hitting .235 with three runs scored, six RBI and is 1-for-2 in stolen bases.

INCOMING PLAYERS
Cade Heil – Sunbelt Baseball League – Atlanta Crackers
Heil has been used both to pitch and hit for Atlanta this summer. In his one appearance on the mound, he recorded a save for the Crackers. The incoming freshman is currently hitting .190 with two runs scored, a double and three RBI.

Chase Sudduth – Valley Baseball League – New Market Rebels
Playing alongside teammates Corbitt and Luigs, Sudduth is giving Nighthawk fans a lot to be excited about next season when he takes the field for UNG. He is currently hitting .326 with 29 runs scored, nine doubles, a triple, two homers and 25 RBI.

Crews Taylor – Sunbelt Baseball League – Gwinnett Tide
The incoming freshman has been huge at the plate for Gwinnett, hitting .250 with five doubles. He also has five RBI and eight runs scored.

No. 2 UNG Baseball Rallies For 10-6 Win Over GSW In PBC Tournament Opener

FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman catcher Andres Perez dropped a two-out, two-run double into shallow center field to snap a 5-5 deadlock and spark second-ranked and top-seeded University of North Georgia to a 10-6 come-from-behind win over eighth-seeded Georgia Southwestern State University, Wednesday evening in the third game of the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament.

North Georgia (41-8) advances to play in a winners’ bracket game on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against either UNC Pembroke or Columbus State.

Perez finished with two hits as did UNG designated hitter Bill Leroy, while first baseman Trevor Sams went 3-for-3 with a double and a three-run homer.

Southpaw Dallas Deavers (2-0), the second of fourth UNG hurlers, earned the win with two and a third scoreless frames.

Georgia Southwestern junior starter Kyle Spinks (2-4) was tagged with the loss as he allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings. He fanned seven and walked six.

North Georgia took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Sams led off with a single and later scored from third when Spinks was called for a two-out balk.

The Hurricanes took a 5-1 advantage in the top fourth with a handful of runs. The outburst featured a sacrifice fly, a two-run homer, and two runs scoring on an infield fielding error.

A two-out, two-run single to right by UNG’s Devin Gearhart quickly trimmed the margin to 5-3 in the last of the fourth. A run-scoring single by Michael Bell and a sacrifice fly to the left field wall by Steven Tomlinson knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth, before Perez delivered his go-ahead hit to put the Nighthawks up 7-5.

A sacrifice fly in the seventh brought the Hurricanes to within 7-6, but Sam’s three-run homer to left center with two outs in the eighth plated three insurance runs for North Georgia. The Hurricanes put a pair of runners on base in the top of the ninth, but were unable to mount a rally.

McCrary and Hoover Lift Nighthawks To Win Over Lynn, 5-4

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Fueled by a strong pitching performance from Daniel McCrary and perfect day from the plate from Connor Hoover, the No. 27 University of North Georgia baseball team posted a 5-4 win over Lynn on Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium, avoiding a three-game sweep. McCrary fanned seven Fighting Knights in six innings of work, scattering seven hits and three runs to earn his second win of the season.

Hoover started the Nighthawks’ scoring in the bottom of the first frame when his RBI-triple bounded off the top of the fence in dead centerfield, scoring Devin Gearhart who led off the inning on a first-pitch single.

After Lynn evened the score in the top of the second, Conner Corbitt placed a Lynn offering on the walking track well above the left field fence, giving North Georgia a lead that they would never relinquish.

A two-RBI double by Trevor Sams in the fourth and a RBI-groundout by Steven Tomlinson in the sixth rounded out UNG’s scoring.

Lynn added single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings to cap the scoring for the Fighting Knights.

Defensively, a diving catch in left field by Corbitt in the fourth and a leaping snag by Michael Bell in the seventh extinguished scoring opportunities for Lynn.

NOTES

– Connor Hoover and Conner Corbitt combined to go 7-of-8 eight from the plate to lead the Nighthawk offense. Hoover was a perfect 4-for-4 and tallied his sixth multiple-hit game of the season, while Conner Corbitt was successful in three of his four plate appearances, including his third homerun of the season in the second inning.

– After allowing 34 hits in the first two games of the series, the North Georgia pitching staff held Lynn to just eight hits on the day, including just one through the first five innings.

– Michael Gouge extended his hitting streak to eight games with his single to right center in the third.

– McCrary’s seven strikeouts matched the single game high for the season that he set in a Feb. 5 win over Carson-Newman.

– Today’s game is the first all season that the Lynn was held to under five runs in a game.

NEXT

North Georgia continues its stretch of 10 consecutive home games when the Nighthawks host the Nighthawk’s Nest Classic on Feb. 24-26 at Bob Stein Stadium. The three-day event features six games between the Nighthawks, Albany State, Florida Tech and Qunicy. UNG will open the Classic with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch against Quincy on Friday, Feb. 24 at 1:00. Morrison, Perez Earn D2CCA Second Team All-Region Honors

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – After being named to the NCBWA All-Region Second Team earlier this week, University of North Georgia baseball players Parker Morrison and Andres Perez earned D2CCA All-Region honors as announced by the association Friday evening.

A redshirt freshman from Cumming, Georgia, Morrison is the second team All-Region reliever after recording 10 saves and a 4-2 record and posting a 2.01 ERA in 53.2 innings of work on the mound for UNG. He had 62 strikeouts against just 27 walks, with opponents hitting just .164 against him this season.

A sophomore from Duluth, Georgia, Perez earned second team All-Region honors as a catcher, hitting .330 with a Peach Belt best 23 homers to go along with 68 RBI and a .699 slugging percentage. He also caught 20 of the 28 base runners that tried to steal a base against him this season.

Both Nighthawks are on the D2CCA All-Region list for the first time in their careers.

Baseball Snaps WSSU’s Winning Streak With 4-2 Win

DAHLONEGA – Despite a ninth-inning threat from the Rams of Winston-Salem State, the University of North Georgia baseball team was able to hang on to a two-run lead as Parker Morrison struck out the side with runners on the corners to win game one of the series, 4-2, Friday night at Bob Stein Stadium.

Winston-Salem jumped on the Nighthawks in the third to get a lead. A lead off single from Wellington Guzman followed by a sacrifice bunt from Nick Williams, then a homer over left center from Randy Norris put the Rams up 2-0.

Behind in the score, North Georgia fought back in the bottom of the frame. William Mapes led off with a bunt to the first baseman, diving safely into the bag to board a runner for UNG. Chase Sudduth drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Andres Perez, whose RBI single to left scored Mapes and cut the lead in half, 2-1. A wild pitch would allow Sudduth to score and tie it up.

A RBI double from Nick Clarno to score Jake Arnold, who reached on a double to left, clinched the lead for the Nighthawks in the fourth frame. Then in the sixth, Arnold’s hot bat sent a shot over left to add an insurance run and extend the lead, 4-2.

The Rams were not through as they fought back in the ninth. A leadoff single from Emilio Abreu brought the tying run to plate for WSSU, Cole Parks. Parks blasted a ground single through the right side to board the go-ahead for the Rams, as Abreu advanced to third on the play. But despite the effort, Morrison sat the following three batters down in order to close it out for the Nighthawks.

NOTES
– Arnold went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, and one run scored. Clarno went 1-for-4 with a double and a RBI as well.

– With this win, Cade Heil improved to 6-5 on the season, WSSU’s Seth Reeves (3-3) drew the loss, and Morrison earned his 10th save of the year. Heil also had three pickoffs in the contest.

– UNG disrupted WSSU’s eight-game winning streak, and improved their streak to five.

North Georgia will be back at The Steiner tomorrow for game two of the three-game series against Winston-Salem State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

No. 8 Baseball Edges Lander in Pitchers’ Duel to Tie Series

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – After a rough outing in the series opener, the eighth-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team got a more than quality start out of Steven Bower and used a pair of home runs to take down Lander, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Dolny Stadium. The Nighthawks move to 11-4 on the year with the win and are now 1-1 in Peach Belt Conference play.

For the second straight day, Connor Hoover provided an early lead for UNG with a solo homer in the top of the first to give the Nighthawks a 1-0 edge out right out of the gate. That score would stick for the next seven innings until North Georgia scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth that was answered with the Bearcats’ only run of the game in the home half of the inning after back-to-back one out doubles.

Michael Bell provided a little extra insurance in the ninth with a solo shot of his own to give the game its final score, 3-1.

NOTES
– Steven Bower (3-1), the reigning PBC Pitcher of the Week, followed the best start of his career last week with another solid outing, allowing just three hits in 7.1 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.

– Jacob Jones earned his second save of the season allowing just two walks while striking out two in his 1.2 innings of relief.

– The win sets up an opportunity for North Georgia to take the series tomorrow. UNG has not earned a series win over Lander since 2011. The Nighthawks are 18-20 all-time against Lander with a 7-11 mark in games played in Greenwood.

Late Rally Falls Short As No. 27 Nighthawks Fall to No. 1 NSU, 9-7

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – A ninth inning rally came up just short as the No. 27 University of North Georgia baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, 9-7, to visiting Nova Southeastern on Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium. Despite the loss, the Nighthawks were able to claim the series from the nation’s top-ranked team and defending National Champions.

The Sharks got on the board first on Sunday afternoon following a solo-home run. As they have done all weekend, the Nighthawks quickly responded with a three-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, thanks to a three-run home run by Michael Gouge.

Nova Southeastern (6-2) trimmed the lead to a single run in the top of the third with a RBI double and went on to take a 4-3 lead an inning later thanks to a two-run homer.

The seventh inning saw NSU push the lead to 7-3 on three hits, but North Georgia claimed one back in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Steven Tomlinson.

Trailing 9-6 heading into their final at-bat, the Nighthawks mounted a late charge. After a RBI-double by Devin Gearhart, the Nighthawks loaded the bases putting the tying run in scoring position and the winning run at first, but were unable to break through for the equalizer.

NOTES
– After averaging over 12 hits per game in the series’ first two games, the Nighthawk bats were held in check with just seven hits with two hits coming in both the first and ninth innings.

– Steven Tomlinson was the lone Nighthawk to record multiple hits with a 2-for-3 day that included a RBI. Michael Gouge finished 1-for-4 with three RBI’s and a run scored.

– Daniel McCrary was tagged with the loss on the mound for North Georgia.

– Four different Sharks hit homeruns on the day.

– NSU’s Joe DiBenedetto earned the win tossing eight innings of work scattering five hits while striking out three. The win is his second of the season.

North Georgia (6-1) opens another three-game set at home on Friday, Feb. 17 when Lynn (Fla.) comes to Dahlonega for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.

Lumpkin baseball finishes summer league season strong with win

The Lumpkin County Indians baseball team closed their summer league season with an 8-5 win over White County at home yesterday.

This game was a bounce-back for the Indians, who lost 6-0 the day before in a home game against the Chestatee War Eagles.

Lumpkin County broke out with a four run lead in the bottom of the first. A single by Andrew Segars and Caleb Childs each along with a triple by Harris Taylor assured the Indians a comfortable lead early on.

The Lumpkin County Indians finished out their summer league season with an 8-5 victory over the White County Warriors on Thursday.

Dalton Caldwell started on the hill for the Indians, and closed out two innings before the Warriors got two runs on the board in the top of the third.

Those two runs were from a deep drive out to center field by Warrior Kyler Mayo, earning him two RBIs and the first runs of the day for White County.

Lumpkin got the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, thanks to another single by Segars and a double by Nick Turner. From there it was a matter of getting runners across the plate, and singles from Harris Taylor and Caleb Childs brought the score up to 8-2.

The White County Warriors fell to the Indians 8-5 on Thursday at Indian Park.

White County brought in three more runs in the top of the sixth, but in the end the Indians triumphed to finish out the summer.

“Today was a big confidence builder for these guys,” said Head Coach Jonathan Gastley. “We gotta just keep working and doing the little things that we’re doing.”

 

 

Three Baseball Players Named All-Conference

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Three University of North Georgia baseball players were named to the Peach Belt’s All-Conference teams Thursday night at a banquet prior to the start of the PBC Baseball Tournament at Flagler College. Andres Perez was named to the first team, while Cade Heil and Parker Morrison were named to the second team.

Perez, a sophomore out of Duluth, Georgia, leads the PBC in homers with 20 headed into the conference tournament. His 20 bombs is also tied for the UNG single season record. He has caught all 50 games for the Nighthawks as well.

Heil, a freshman from Suwanee, Georgia, has been the Friday starter for the Nighthawks this season, going 6-7 this season with 55 strikeouts across over 93 innings on the mound. Morrison, a redshirt freshman from Cumming, Georgia, leads North Georgia in appearances with 30, garnering a 4-1 record with 10 saves.

The Nighthawks will take on UNC Pembroke tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the PBC Tournament. UNG will also take on Lander and Georgia College in pool play on Saturday with the winner of the pool advancing to the championship game Sunday.

Late Rally Falls Short as No. 9 Cougars Hold On To Beat Baseball, 3-2

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia baseball team had the game tying run on second base with two away but could not bring him home as No. 9 Columbus State held on Saturday night for a 3-2 win at Bob Stein Stadium.

The Cougars struck first in the second inning as Gunar Drinnen singled to plate Robert Brooks and give CSU a 1-0 lead. Columbus State extended its lead to 3-0 on a Drinnen two-run homer in the fourth before the Nighthawks struck back.

With one out in the fourth, Chase Sudduth singled up the middle and moved over to second for Conner Corbitt to double off the wall in left center, plating the Nighthawks’ first run of the night.

From there, both Perez Knowles and Jack Fleming, on in relief, settled in and didn’t allow a single run. The Nighthawks put up a rally in the ninth inning on Cougar closer Payton Phillips, starting with back-to-back one out walks to Andres Perezand Corbitt. After a Cougar error allowed a run to score, the Cougars were able to escape the threat with the win.

NOTES
– Sudduth, Corbitt and Nick Clarno each had hits for North Georgia in the game. Eight of the nine Cougars in the starting lineup had hits.

– The Nighthawks turned three double plays in the game to keep Columbus State at bay. All three were inning ending.

– North Georgia will either be the fifth or sixth seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament, depending on the result of tomorrow’s game.

The Nighthawks and Cougars will wrap up the regular season with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Bob Stein Stadium. Fans are asked to get to their seats by 1:40 p.m. for Senior Day festivities as UNG honors Logan Burt, Dallas Deavers, Fleming and Steven Tomlinson prior to first pitch.

No. 7 Baseball Takes Down Anderson, 7-1

ANDERSON, S.C. – The seventh-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team cruised past Anderson (S.C.), 7-1, Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium after scoring four runs in the first three innings. The Nighthawks improve to 13-4 on the season with the midweek road win.

Devin Gearhart led off the game with a triple to center field and came in to score just moments later on a wild pitch. The Nighthawks tacked on another run in the second with a two-out RBI single down the left field line by Kal Dempsey to plate Connor Corbitt all the way from first. UNG would add two more in the top of the third highlighted by an RBI double to left center by Michael Gouge.

Dempsey would knock in another run in the sixth and the Nighthawks went on to score two more in the seventh including Michael Bell‘s second RBI of the night to take a 7-0 lead.

Anderson’s Stephen McKnight hit the only home run of the game in the eighth to give the game its final score, 7-1.

NOTES
– Junior Gabe Moore (1-0) picked up his first win as Nighthawk in what was also his first start for UNG. Moore tossed five innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts all without issuing a free pass.

– Devin Gearhart and Joshua Peterson each hit a triple in the game. It marks the first-time UNG has hit multiple triples in a game since Eason Spivey and Joey Cecere both tripled against Truett McConnell on April 8, 2014.

– North Georgia improves to 28-5 all-time against Anderson and currently have the series’ longest win streak, having won the last 10 straight games over the Trojans. Anderson will make a return trip to Dahlonega on Wednesday, April 12.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks return home to the friendly confines of Bob Stein Stadium this weekend hosting Armstrong State in their PBC home opener with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Saturday’s twin bill – the first of just two at home this year – is set for a 1 p.m., start.
