Clayton State spoils UNG’s home opener, 2-1

DAHLONEGA – An early second half goal by the visiting Lakers would be the difference as the No. 17 University of North Georgia men’s soccer team dropped its 2022 Peach Belt Conference home opener, 2-1, to visiting Clayton State at the UNG Soccer Field at Lynn Cottrell Park.
Clayton State’s Isaac Pimenta powered a shot into the top right corner in the match’s 57 minute to provide the match’s final separation.
The Lakers opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Geo Rios found the back of the next after an assist by Alexis Iturria.
North Georgia equalized less than three minutes later when Santiago Gimenez converted a penalty kick.

• Clayton State was one shot shy of doubling up the Nighthawks in the shot column, holding a 15-8 advantage.
• The physical game featured eight yellow cards including four for each side.
• UNG’s Hazel Ley tallied eight saves in goal matching his single highest turn aways of the year (8).

MORROW, Ga. – A late goal in the first half is all Clayton State needed as they held on to defeat the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team, 1-0, Saturday evening.
The Lakers scored in the 40th minute as Marie Devillers found Kamila Mroziewicz for the game’s lone goal. North Georgia had 11 shots in the second half while holding CSU to just two, but couldn’t find the back of the net to equalize.
NOTES
– Peyton Satterfield had three saves in her 2021 debut between the posts.
– Taylor Malasek took five shots on the day, three of which were on target.
– North Georgia now needs a win and a Clayton State loss Saturday at Young Harris to host the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt tournament.

Clayton State outlasts UNG, 3-1

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Clayton State jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on to defeat the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team, 3-1, Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex at Lynn Cottrell Park.
The Lakers had Isaac Pimenta and Geo Rios score in the 16th and 23rd minutes, respectively, to take the early 2-0 lead. After halftime, UNG came out with a lot of pressure, resulting in a Gustavo Alencar free kick goal in the 63rd minute.
With UNG pushing numbers forward, Clayton State took advantage with a counter attack that gave Alexis Iturria his fifth goal of the year to bring the match to its 3-1 final.
NOTES
– 36 fouls were called in the match.
– The Lakers put 11 shots in the air, nine of which were on target. Ben Kempffer made six saves on the night.

Nighthawks coast to 106-81 victory in PBC Tournament semifinal

DAHLONEGA – After a nip-and-tuck first half, the No. 6 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team scored 64 points in the final 20 minutes to earn a 106-81 win over Clayton State in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinal inside the UNG Convocation Center. In the process, Caroline Martin and Lacie McCoy each recorded new career highs.
The Nighthawks jumped out on a 9-0 run, but the Lakers battled back into the game, never letting the lead get too far out of reach throughout the first half. Every run that North Georgia had, Clayton State found an answer to trim the lead down to a possession until the halftime horn saw the Nighthawks lead, 42-40.
The second half was all North Georgia as the Nighthawks shot over 61 percent from the floor, stretching the lead out to as many as the final 25 point margin.
NOTES
– Martin netted 35 points in the game, matching the single game high in the conference this season. Her 14-for-14 performance from the charity stripe is a PBC tournament record while her 14 makes ties a PBC tourney record. The scoring output was just two points away from the league tournament record as well.
– McCoy netted 25 points off the bench in 31 minutes of action, by far surpassing her previous career high of 15 points against Young Harris earlier this season.
– North Georgia’s 106 points is the most scored against Clayton State in the all-time series and is the second most points scored in PBC Tournament history in a single game, falling behind Lander’s 107-point outburst in the quarterfinals in 2019.
– There were 53 fouls called in the game between both teams, resulting in 65 free throws. UNG was 31-for-33 (93.9%) from the stripe, finishing just 0.5 percent behind the program record for a single game free throw shooting percentage.
– In the other semifinal, No. 2 Lander defeated Georgia Southwestern, 72-52, inside Finis Horne Arena.
