Development Authority will hear update on StruXure when it meets Tuesday morning

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga — The Development Authority of Lumpkin County will meet Tuesday, Jan 21 at 9 a.m. in the County Administration Building, 99 Courthouse Hill.
There will be a project update on StruXure Outdoor, formerly Arcadia, a presentation by Ivana Pelnar-Zaiko, Chairman of the historic Holly Theater, and staff and associate member reports.
StruXure is undergoing an expansion made possible, in part, by bonds issued by the Development Authority and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs’ Georgia Agribusiness and Rural Jobs Act (GARJA).
StruXure manufactures adjustable louvered roof systems for outdoor living spaces. Fast-paced growth has necessitated the need for more space so, when StruXure wanted to purchase the building next door, it approached the Development Authority for help. The Authority issued Industrial Revenue Bonds for the purchase and now leases the facility back to StruXure for the cost of the financing.
Company officials say the new building should be operational this fall. They expect 40 new jobs to be created in the next three years.

Development Authority to discuss Gateway Corridor Monday
News November 16, 2019DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Development Authority of Lumpkin County will present draft Gateway Corridor Regulations & Design Guidelines when it meets Monday Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. in the Lumpkin County Administration Building, Courthouse Hill.
Development Authority Executive Director Rebecca Mincey said planning for the corridor has been underway for many months. It has been a collaboration of city and county officials based on the input provided by citizens during stakeholder meetings
The Carl Vincent Institute at the University of Georgia has spent months collecting input from everyone about what they want to see. Citizens’ comments dealt primarily with transportation, zoning and aesthetics.
Because it will be such an important presence on the corridor, representatives from North Georgia Health Systems have also been involved in planning.
The architect firm of TSW has presented details about design guidelines with examples of previous projects they have worked on.
Members of the authority will also review financials for Sept. and Oct. 2019 approve minutes of the Sept. and Oct. meetings as well as a draft 2020 budget.

Dahlonega man faces charges of aggravated child molestation

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — A 36-year-old Dahlonega man is in the Lumpkin County Detention Center today, facing charges of child molestation and aggravated child molestation.
A female student at Lumpkin County High School told Alan Hogan, a counselor and tennis coach at the school, that Jason Bittinger had molested her and her sister for years, starting when they were five years old until the time they reached the age of 13.
The counselor brought the information to School Resource Officer Nichols Parrish who conducted an interview. The girl said Bittinger lived in the same home and that when she told her mother, they argued about it.
She said she didn’t come forward because she feared retaliation. Hogan also made a referral to the Department of Family and Children’s Services.
The incident was turned over to Lumpkin County CID and after an investigation, Bittinger was arrested Sept. 29.

4-H Director Jailed on Child Pornography Charge

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – A joint investigation conducted by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, and University of Georgia Police led to the Wednesday arrest of the director of the Lumpkin County 4-H Center on a charge of possession of child pornography.
Paul Travis Williams, 48, was arrested in Dahlonega following a month-long investigation.
4-H is part of the UGA Extension in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Deputies with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the Lumpkin County 4-H Center based on a cyber tip showing that suspected child pornography had been uploaded from a location inside the camp. The search included 17 Cloverleaf Trail, the residence of the Director of the 4-H Center.
The search produced a hard drive that contained one of the uploaded images of suspected child pornography
Authorities say the investigation is continuing.
Amicalola EMC presents Lumpkin County Development Authority a check for $20,000

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. – Amicalola President/CEO Todd Payne presented the Development Authority of Lumpkin County a check for $20,000 during the authority’s monthly meeting today (Sept. 24).
Payne said since 2010 the non-profit company has given more than $1 million to a scholarship fund for high school seniors in Lumpkin, Dawson, Cherokee, Pickens and Gilmer counties. Amicalola also gives about $50,000 a year to fire departments they serve and $50,000 a year to teacher grants.
“This year, we had a little extra money and that is why we’re here,” he said. “We’ve got a check here for $20,000 for the Development Authority of Lumpkin County. We’re glad to be able to help.”
The authority approved the financial report as read by Director Rebecca Shirley.

On Sept. 28-29 — The Six Gap Century’s ultra-challenging route takes cyclists up and down six of the steepest climbs in the North Georgia Mountains. The 104-mile course takes cyclists on a vertical climb of more than 11,200 feet. The Three Gap Fifty’s alternative route offers half the gaps over a course of 58 miles.
On Monday, Oct. 28 there will be a candidate forum for the three city council seats that are being contested at 5 p.m. in the Parks and Recreation Department.

Spring Career Expo Scheduled April 11

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Employment is making a come back in many north Georgia counties, including Lumpkin where the Spring Career Expo is planned for April 11 from 1-4 p.m. in the Parks and Recreation Department, 365 Riley Road in Dahlonega.
State Senator Steve Gooch said recently, “Just about every employer I’ve talked to has jobs. Arcadia Louvered Roofs, Wahoo Docks, Refrigiware all these companies are looking for employees and can’t seem to find candidates. Hopefully the job fair will take care of that.”
Many employers offering a variety of jobs have registered to participate in hte event, including Amicalola Falls State Park and Lodge, Piedmont Automotive Products Inc., PolyPortables, Lumpkin County School System, State Farm Insurance, TruGreen, University of North Georgia and Wahoo Docks. Several other employers are expected to register.
