Lumpkin County Coroner announces plans to run for reelection in 2020

LUMPKIN CO., Ga. — Lumpkin County Coroner Jim Sheppard announced to Fetch Your News Friday that he will run for reelection in 2020.
Sheppard has helped put Lumpkin County on the map during his current term as coroner by earning prestigious accolades for his outstanding performance while in office, which earned him the honor of being named the 2018 Coroner of the Year for the State of Georgia by the Georgia Coroners Association.
Sheppard told FYN that being named 2018 Coroner of the Year was, “A fantastic honor, but the cool thing about it was the partnership we’ve created with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, the Lumpkin County District Attorney’s Office, the fire department, and so many other players who were involved.”
Sheppard served 28 years with the Dekalb County Police Department and when he was asked about his current term as county corner, he expressed his deep gratitude to the community, “I’m incredibly grateful that the people of Lumpkin County elected me as their coroner…It’s not my office, I’m just the one who holds it. It’s the public’s office – I serve these folks.”
When asked what goals he wished to accomplish if he is reelected in 2020, Sheppard explained, “I’d like to work with the state somehow, some way, to expedite autopsy reports.” Sheppard further explained that he makes sure that he is available 24-7 to the families who have experienced loss. The 2020 primary election is May 19 with a runoff (if necessary) set for July 21. The general election is Nov. 3.

Shooting death reported in Lumpkin County Saturday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Sheriff Stacy Jarrard reported today that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the shooting death last night (April 20) of Mr. Jason Burnett, 43, of Lumpkin County.
The shooting took place at a residence off Bill Anderson Road between 6:30 and 7 p.m.
Authorities have arrested Axel Willis, who is in his early 20s in connection with the shooting.
No other details are available at this time.
Sheriff Jarrard said his prayers go out to the families who are affected by this tragedy.

Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Offices locates runaway juveniles

According to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Michael Gravely met with two complainants at the LCSO, regarding two runaway juveniles on March 3.
Complainant one explained that his fourteen-year-old daughter had her fifteen-year-old-friend staying with her for a sleepover at his Dahlonega residence. Sometime between 8:00PM and 11:30PM, they left the residence, and the complainant was unaware of where they had gone, since the two juveniles did not have permission to leave. After the information was confirmed by complainant two, they both told police that they had spent the night/early morning looking for the missing teens.
Officials searched the known areas and people who might know the juveniles, in an attempt to locate them. A Missing/Lost Persons Report was filed for both teens, and a BOLO was sent out for the local area/surrounding counties. The juveniles were also put on the LCSO media page, with guardian permission.
Investigators learned from an informant, who was the boyfriend of the runaways, that both girls were at the birthday party around midnight and were in good spirits during the party. About 15 minutes after their arrival, both girls left, (presumingly on foot), but returned to the party after some time, in a gray, four-door, passenger vehicle, (possibly a Honda Civic), with a Georgia tag.
They were with two white males, whom he had never met. He noticed the males acting suspicious, by hiding every time a car drove by. The informant further explained that the two males had revealed that they were on probation and had warrants out for their arrests.
The white males also stated that the juveniles had told him that they had run away, and were scared of getting caught, due to the potentiality of juvenile court.
Further questioning led investigators to a Dawson County residence, where the missing juveniles were possibly hiding. Deputy Gravely reports seeing a gray, four-door, passenger sedan with a Georgia tag at the residence, but they could not locate any individuals at the residence.
On March 3, at exactly 8:00PM, Deputy Gravely received text messages from the original complainants, stating that they both believe they had new information on the teen’s whereabouts, and at 8:22PM on March 3, the LCSO posted on their Facebook page that the missing teens had been found, “Both teenage girls have been found safe. I would like to thank everyone for your assistance and prayers during the search. Thanks! Sheriff Stacy M. Jarrard”

Arrests are made after motor-vehicle pursuit

According to a press release from the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, LC deputies were involved in a motor vehicle pursuit, starting in Lumpkin County and ending in Hall County.
The pursuit occurred after an LC deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop on a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee that contained four occupants, for defective equipment. The Cherokee failed to stop after the deputy initiated their emergency equipment, and the occupants appeared to be trying to hide items within the interior of the vehicle.
The pursuit ended in Hall County on the block of 5800 Cool Springs Road after the driver lost control of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, leaving the roadway and striking a wooden fence. The occupants all fled on foot, but Hall County deputies apprehended two of the suspects. A Lumpkin County Deputy, along with his K-9, caught the other two suspects, after engaging in foot pursuit.
The suspects arrested were Samantha Woody, Brandon Flanagan, Herman Dover, John Rodgers II. They have been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Related Objects. The driver, Samantha Woody, was also charged with traffic violations.
LCSO released a statement of gratitude for help in apprehending the suspects, “The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Hall County and the Georgia State Patrol, for their assistance in the pursuit and capture.”

GBI investigates officer involved shooting in Lumpkin County

According to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office:
On Friday, March 15, 2019, the GBI was requested by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an Officer Involved Shooting (OIS)investigation involving a Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Deputy. The initial investigation revealed that the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office was called to 155 Pecks Mill Creek Road, Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia, at 7:19 p.m. concerning a report of a residential alarm.
Upon arrival, a deputy located a subject, identified as Valery Michelle Barron, age 33, of Cleveland, GA, at the residence found to be in the process of burglarizing the residence. As the deputy attempted to arrest Barron, she resisted and entered a vehicle she drove to the residence. While trying to flee the scene, Barron struck the deputy with her vehicle. The deputy fired on the vehicle during the incident. Barron was able to flee the scene, driving in an erratic manner. She was subsequently arrested at her residence by the Lumpkin and White County Sheriff’s Offices. It was determined that Barron was not injured as a result of the incident.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Once complete, the investigation will be provided to the Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Jack Jones, a private business owner who has been in and out of law enforcement in both Hall and Lumpkin counties since 1998, has announced he will run for Lumpkin County Sheriff in 2020.
Jones worked for the Hall County Sheriff’s Office until 2010 when, he said, politics intervened.
“I received a slap in the face when I stopped the wrong person and tried to charge him with two felonies and a misdemeanor,” Jones said. “I went from a hero to a zero as the result of a traffic stop on a politically-connected subject. I took him to jail and he ended up not being charged and turned over to his dad.”
Jones said he worked there for two more years but was miserable until he transferred to Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office. The plan, he said, was to fulfill the number of years required to qualify for retirement then run for sheriff.
“I came here to run for sheriff and to be firm, fair and consistent and to change the atmosphere for the employees,” he said.
Jones said he worked as school resource officer (SRO) in Lumpkin County until 2016 when he was moved to the night shift and submitted his resignation.
Jones has run his own pool company for nearly 20 years. He and wife Tonya have four children and attend The Torch church in Dahlonega.

Arrest made in GBI rape investigation

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jose Luis Amaro Vazquez, 33, of Mexico, in Dahlonega.
In October 2018, the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI initiate an investigation into allegations of rape, cruelty to children, and false imprisonment. The case agent was able to corroborate the allegations through an exhaustive investigation with assistance from a bilingual Gainesville Police Department Detective.
As a result, Vazquez was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of child cruelty, and one count of false imprisonment. Vazquez is currently housed in the Lumpkin County Jail.
Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be provided to the Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney for prosecution.

Dawsonville woman charged in domestic dispute

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Briana Seay, 22, of Dawsonville was arrested last week and charged with battery, interference with a call for emergency services and criminal trespassing following a domestic dispute at her ex-husband’s residence in Lumpkin County.
Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic violence call at 691 Grindle Brothers Road on Sept 1. According to the incident report, Kevin Lee Black, 27, who has custody of the couple’s infant daughter, allowed Seay to visit and spend time with their daughter.
After a two-hour visit, Black said Seay refused to leave without her daughter. He told deputies he had arranged a ride for Seay and it was waiting outside. When she refused to go, he attempted to call 9-1-1. He said she grabbed the phone from him, threw it against the wall and began to slap him while he was holding the girl.
He said he retrieved the phone and successfully called 9-1-1 but when deputies arrived, Seay was already gone.
Following a brief investigation, deputies took out a warrant for her arrest and she was taken into custody at her home in Dawson County and transported to the Lumpkin County Detention Center.

Dahlonega man charged with simple battery

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 30-year-old Ian Vickery of Dahlonega on Sept. 9 and charged him with simple battery following an incident at 244 Jasmine Cove in Dahlonega.
Deputies responded to a 9-1-1 call in reference to a domestic dispute. When they arrived, Vickery’s wife Brittany said she and her husband had been arguing all day and that he accused her of cheating on him. She said he took her phone from her and when she took it back, he slapped it out of her hand and shoved her. As she attempted to retrieve it, she said he shoved her again and she fell into the shower stall.
Brittany advised that her husband had been taking medication for cancer and that she didn’t want him to be arrested. She further stated he had a scan scheduled for noon the next day. The arresting deputy checked with his supervisor who stated Vickery would be released in time for his appointment.
He was then transported to the Lumpkin County Detention Center.

Suspects of Lumpkin County home invasion have been arrested

Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office have apprehended four suspects of a home invasion that occured on August 17.
The report indicates that Lumpkin County Communications received a 911 call from a resident stating that someone was beating of the door and windows of their home. Upon arrival to the scene, Lumpkin County Deputies discovered the person beating on the door and windows was a victim of home invasion that had occured moments prior. Although the victim was not injured, they were in obvious distress.
The suspects of the home invasion fled the scene of the home invasion by foot when they noticed that deputies had arrived. After canvassing the area, Lumpkin Deputies apprehended the four suspects. Charges are still pending, and an investigation is underway; location of the home invasion has not yet been released.
Sheriff Jarrard thanked the citizens who assisted with information leading to the arrest of the four suspects, as well as the hard work of the deputies that resulted in the arrests, in a statement on Friday, August 17.
The four suspects are: 18-year-old Preston Andrew Anderson, 18-year-old Quintin Chase McConnell, 17-year-old Blake Mitchell McKinzie, and 17-year-old Gavyne Anthony Sowell. All four suspects are residents of Dawson County.

Big Easter Egg Hunt at R-Ranch March 31

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office has joined with R-Ranch and Lumpkin County Family Connection to host the second annual community Easter Egg Hunt Saturday, March 31, starting at 2 p.m. at R-Ranch.
There will be egg dying, bouncy houses and a petting zoo. The hunt begins at 3 p.m. More than 50,000 eggs will be hidden for the kids to find. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Lumpkin County man charged with aggravated stalking

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Deputies from the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Christopher Lee Ingram, 39, of Dahlonega, last week and charged him with aggravated stalking, a felony.
Deputies were called to 2992 Duffy Grizzle Road by Jerrell Lee Ingram, 66. Jerrell Ingram reported that the suspect was at the home in violation of a criminal bond and that he had locked himself in a bedroom.
Cpl. Frank Hughes and Sgt. John Simpson attempted to have Christopher Ingram unlock the door. When he refused, they received permission from Jerrell Ingram and kicked the door in and placed him under arrest.
As they were transporting him to the Lumpkin County Detention Center, the suspect began banging his head on the cage, splitting his forehead open. Lumpkin County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was contacted. After they bandaged Ingram’s head, he was booked into the jail.
Commissioners to Meet in Work Session Tuesday

DAHLONEGA — Sheriff Stacy Jarrard will request the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners approve a budget amendment of $36,700 for his office due to the disbandment of the Special Services Division when the Board meets in a work session Tuesday, April 4 at 4 p.m. in the Administration Building Boardroom, 99 Courthouse Hill.
Special Services, which is comprised of the K-9 unit, school resource officers, drug agents, victims services, records and community relations programs, was disbanded earlier this year to allow consolidation and a reduction in the number of divisions and command structure. The services provided by the unit will not go away. The 14 employees who worked in Special Services have been reassigned to other Divisions.
Commissioners are also expected to discuss:
⦁ The appointment of a representative to the Upper Etowah Alliance;
⦁ The appointment of a representative to the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Advisory Planning Board;
⦁ The appoint of a member to the Planning Commission;
⦁ Abandonment of Shadowstone Subdivision Road;
⦁ An amendment to the Animal Control Ordinance;
⦁ Recommendations for Hospital Authority Board appointment;
Commissioners will also review a number of contracts and agreements, including:
⦁ The intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with the City of Dahlonega & Lumpkin County regarding municipal elections;

Several law enforcement agencies combine in drug bust

CLERMONT, Ga. — The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, Hall County Multi Agency Narcotics Squad (MANS), and Appalachian Regional Drug Enforcement Office (ARDEO) combined forces in a drug investigation and arrest that took more than $61,000 worth of methamphetamine off the street Wednesday.
Justin Pacer Smith, 44, was arrested at his home on Fieldstone Court in Clermont.
Lt. Don Scalia with the Hall said in a press release, “This person had been on and off our radar – in fact, this location had – for a pretty good while now. “Then, we got recent information that there was some increased activity there.”
With that information, Scalia said agents obtained search warrants for the house in Clermont.
In addition, agents confiscated digital scales, packaging materials and drug paraphernalia. They also found $1,100 in cash at the residence. Scalia said Smith was charged with trafficking methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and possession of methamphetamine.
No other arrests are anticipated.

LC Sheriff inducted as president of Georgia Sheriff’s Association

Lumpkin County Sheriff, Stacy Jarrard, was sworn in as the 2019-20 president of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association (GSA) on Thursday, July 25 during their annual Sheriff’s Summer Conference.
The conference is typically three days, ending with the induction ceremony. This year, the conference was located at Lake Lanier Islands Legacy Lodge and went from Tuesday, July 23 until Thursday, July 25.
Jarrard was sworn in by Lumpkin County Probate Judge, Michael Chastain. Judge Chastain told FYN that it was “certainly an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to administer the oath to the officers of the Georgia Sheriffs Association, and in particular Sheriff Jarrard…As a resident of Lumpkin County, I am very proud of what Sheriff Jarrard has accomplished during his tenure as our Sheriff and during his career in law enforcement.” Chastain also explained why he felt Jarrard was “well suited to serve as the president of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association,” with the main reason being that he was “elected to the position by his peers…As a whole, the 159 Sheriff’s of the state of Georgia chose him to serve as their representative. This shows me an incredible amount of confidence in his abilities from the people who know best what is needed to be successful in the position.”
When asked what he hoped to accomplish as GSA president, Jarrard told FYN that his main goal was to make it so that Georgia’s local jailers, dispatchers, and anyone working in public safety would be able to receive Peace Officer’s Annuity and Benefits (POAB), “Unfortunately, when people first enter law enforcement, they have to work without it counting towards their retirement. I want to make that happen….Just like with a lot of professions, the entry-level employees are the hardest working of the whole establishment…that’s what I’m working hard for; I have a year to try and make this happen.”
Before being elected as GSA president, Jarrard had to work his way through the GSA, including being president of the GSA youth homes for three years, “I was already planting bugs at that time that I was going to run for this [GSA President] and that’s what my main mission was [POAB for all public safety employees].”
Lumpkin County Coroner, Jim Sheppard, attended the ceremony with his wife, Rhonda, and their daughter. Sheppard also expressed his elation over Jarrard as GSA president, “I am so, so proud of Stacy. Him being named the president of the GSA just furthers our footprint here in North Georgia that Lumpkin County is one of the top counties when it comes to elected officials, public support, the community, and the partnerships we’ve created together…he’s [Jarrard] is going to be a major player down at the capital. He’s going to have a strong voice.”
Former GSA president, Gilmer County Sheriff Stacy Nicholson, told Fetch Your News that during his term, his number one goal was to, “restore and rebuild bridges with our state politicians.” Nicholson further explained that collectively, the main priority of the GSA is public safety. He described his experience of handing the gavel over to Jarrard as a “very rewarding experience. I was very happy to hand over the gavel to Sheriff Jarrard; I feel like he’s going to do a great job.”
The GSA was founded in 1954 and is a non-profit corporation that is limited to 159 elected sheriffs who support the law enforcement community. According to the GSA website, their mission is, “To promote and further professionalize the Office of Sheriff in order to enhance public safety throughout Georgia.”

Teenager charged with punching her stepfather

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Sarah Bender, 17, has been charged with battery, family violence in connection with a domestic violence incident on April 25 at 4946 Camp Wahsega Road.
According to the arrest report by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a 911 call at 8:33 p.m. Bender told Lumpkin County Communication, “I just beat the hell out of my stepdad.”
When deputies arrived, Bender immediately said she struck her stepfather, Chad Gilreath and stated he called her names, “So I hit him.”
According to the report, Gilreath had obvious scratches and bruises on his face. He and his wife, Carol Gilreath, said he had been arguing with Bender, calling her names and she stepped in to separate then and Bender began striking Mr. Gilreath in the face approximately five times.
Mr. Gilreath stated that he did not need medical attention. Bender was then transported to the Lumpkin County Detention Center.
