UPDATE: Suspects in Lumpkin County home invasion currently being held without bond
Community, News September 5, 2018LUMPKIN CO., GA
Four suspects in a Lumpkin County home invasion on August 17 are currently being held at the Lumpkin County Jail without bond.
Preston Andrew Anderson (18), Quintin Chase McConnell (18), Blake Mitchell McKinzie (17), and Gavyne Anthony Sowell (17) were arrested on August 17 for a home invasion that took place in Lumpkin County.
According to Lumpkin County deputy, Kyle Rosso, he responded to reports of a prowler off Margaret Drive, where upon arrival, he reported seeing an orange Chevrolet Cobalt. When he approached the vehicle, he states, “I observed a male subject frantically exit the vehicle and run into the woods.” The owner of vehicle was later identified as James McConnell. When questioned about the whereabouts of his Chevrolet, Mr. McConnell told Rosso that, “his son and a few of his friends had taken it from the home earlier that night.”
Russo also states seeing a, “dark in color four door passenger car drive down Old Ellijay East. The vehicle stopped in the road and began to turn around at the intersection of Old Ellijay East and Margaret Drive.” During the rush to turn the vehicle around, Russo reports that it “struck the bank as it was in reverse backing up.”
The occupants of the vehicle, Steven Lewis and Eric Odum, reported to Russo that unknown, masked individuals had entered the front door of his residence, and they had were brandishing firearms. Lewis reported that he had “ran from his home and banged on the neighbors house” for help. The homeowner did not answer the door, but they did call 911, according to the police report.
Russo, along with Investigators Jason Canupp, Aaron Norrell, and Lumpkin County Deputy Sutton found McKinzie and McConnell hiding in a creek bed near the crime scene. Sowell was taken into custody and transported to Lumpkin County Detention Center later that night, after police responded to a 911 call where a citizen had reported an unknown person, dres
sed in all black walking down Highway 9 south near Siloam Church Road. Sowell admitted to participating in the home invasion earlier that evening.
Anderson was taken into custody the next day by the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office.
Items reported missing were a watch and speaker; a mask that possibly belonged to one of the suspects was retrieved from Lewis’ home.

Lumpkin officials hold special called meeting to discuss road improvements and maintenance
News, Police & Government August 28, 2018
LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — City and county officials met on Tuesday to discuss a potential single-county transportation special purpose local option sales tax (TSPLOST) to fund local road improvements and maintenance.
Association of County Commissioners Georgia representative, Kathleen Bowen, presented data regarding the TSPLOST to members of the City Council, Board of Commissioners, and other government officials.
Before the tax can be collected, however, it would have to be approved by voters in a March 19 referendum. If voters approve, a one percent sales tax could be collected for up to five years beginning in June 2019.
Officials decided to hold a public involvement meeting Sept. 25, at 5:30 p.m. to allow citizens to ask questions and offer ideas on which roads need to be repaired. The intersection at the end Oak Grove was discussed as one potential repair project.
Dahlonega Mayor, Sam Norton, explained that this would also give tourists and students at the University of North Georgia-Dahlonega the chance to “give back” to the county, because they contribute to increased sales in Lumpkin County, providing more funds available for road improvements. Norton also expressed the importance of listening to the citizens on which road projects should be added to the list.
The estimated timeline for TSPLOST referendum is as follows:
- August-September: County and City develops project lists with public input.
- Early September: Send letter to City of Dahlonega regarding official meeting in late September.
- Late September: Official meeting to discuss project list.
- October 2, and October 16: County and City vote on their list of projects.
- November 6, and November 20: Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) approved by the Board of Commissioners.
- December 4, and December 18: Resolution approved by the Board of Commissioners.
- February 6, 20198: Call to paper
- March 19, 2019: Election

Video Shows Altercation Between Teacher And Student
News August 14, 2018
Channel 2 Action News recently published a video involving an incident between a now-former Lumpkin County teacher and baseball coach and a 17-year-old Lumpkin County student in the lunchroom cafeteria of Lumpkin County’s alternative school, during school hours on April 21, 2017. The altercation allegedly began over a styrofoam lunch tray.
In the video, Tim Garner, 61, is seen putting his hand on the student’s neck, while forcing him onto a lunch table. Garner was charged with first degree cruelty to children and simple battery, which are both felonies; he turned himself in to the Lumpkin County Detention Center shortly after the charges were filed. He also resigned from his position with Lumpkin County Schools.
Garner states that he had asked the student to clean up the mess he made in the cafeteria, which escalated into a physical struggle. According to Garner, the student, whom he asserted was a troubled teen who had a history of violence, became physical with Garner and his main concern, he said, was to restrain the student to prevent him from swinging.
The event recently resurfaced after Channel 2 Action News released the video to the public, which has been available via open records request since 2017. Lumpkin County superintendent, Dr. Rob Brown, released a statement earlier today, in response to the video and the investigation, “As educators, our primary responsibility is to keep our students safe and free from harm. We expect the actions of our employees to support this mission at all times”.
Michael Seiden, WSBTV reporter, received the following statement from the student’s attorney, Zack Tumlin, on Friday, August 10.
“Coach Garner’s assertions that my client is a troubled and violent youth is absurd, as is the assertion that my client initiated any contact with him. The truth of the matter, as the video clearly shows, is that Coach Garner decided to subdue and choke a child for almost 50 seconds as a method of exercising discretionary discipline for a minor infraction in the lunchroom. We expect Coach Garner to be held accountable and take responsibility for his lapse in judgment, and for the School District to do the right thing in settling the civil claims that will follow the criminal prosecution.”
While the alternative school does provide an alternative learning environment for students who have had behavioral issues, it is also designed to help students who may benefit from the unique learning conditions due to anxiety and other issues that may hinder them from succeeding in a traditional public school setting. Garner is set to appear in court on Tuesday, August 14.

State Senator Steve Gooch Talks About Economic Development in Rural Georgia
Politics April 24, 2017
This past Friday we continued our discussion about rural Georgia with 51st district (R) State Senator and Lumpkin County’s economic development director, Steve Gooch. Our three areas of focus: rural Georgia economy, broadband access, and health care. Although the district doesn’t want to see something in the line of the KIA plant they most certainly would be open to small companies offering high paying, high tech jobs. In order to attract these types of companies; the area must provide good schools, fast internet, and quality health care. We discussed Piedmont Mountainside new stand alone emergency health care center in Gilmer County; a model for quality health care in rural areas. When our discussion turned to high speed internet for the area, Gooch was unable to say they “moved the ball” concerning Senate Bill 232, Facilitating Internet Broadband Rural Expansion (FIBRE) Act.
