Dahlonega prepares for annual Farm To Table experience fundraiser for local Holly Theater

Every year since 2016, Kimberlee Graham organizes the annual Farm To Table experience, held in Hancock Park right off Dahlonega’s historic square. This year the event will be held on June 29 and will service 130 guests; tickets are being sold for $36 per person, according to Graham.

Graham explained that she buys all of the food from local farms, beginning in Lumpkin County before expanding to local counties. The menu is crafted with the help of Deb Rowe, owner of Shenanigans and Bourbon Street Grille in Dahlonega. According to Graham Rowe, “Graciously offers Shenanigans and Bourbon Street Grille to create my menu based on what I can get fresh.”

This year, a portion of the funds will be given back to The Holly Theatre for their fundraising project that THE FOX will match so the Holly can get upgrades. This is also the first year that wine will be sold at the dinner. Graham told FYN, “The Holly will be allowed to sell wine by the glass to also raise more funds. They will sell Gin Creek Vineyard wines through the CANVAS AND CORK art gallery…After dinner, we will go across the street to Canvas and Cork for dessert more wine offers and coffee.”

Graham expressed that she was still in need of volunteers and it is also something that she has wanted to do in her private home, but she decided to take it downtown instead. “I am proud to have brought the dinner to our area in 2016 and this will be the 4th one.” Tickets are currently on sale through the Farm To Table Experience Dahlonega Facebook page.

NGHS opening new emergency room and building new hospital in Lumpkin County

Northeast Georgia Health System announced in February that they were opening an emergency room in Lumpkin County, in the facility that was formerly Chestatee Regional Hospital. The new facility will open July 1, 2019 and will offer emergency services, as well as some inpatient beds, imaging equipment and other services; however, the emergency room will be open temporarily. NGHS is also currently developing plans for a new hospital facility that will be located along GA-400, near the intersection with Hwy 60. It is expected to be designed in the same fashion as the NGHS Braselton hospital, and will be called Northeast Georgia Medical Center Lumpkin, or NGMC Lumpkin for short.

Offering services at the existing hospital site will preserve the Certificate of Need authority to operate a hospital in Lumpkin County, while also meeting the healthcare needs of Lumpkin and surrounding counties. The anticipated open date for the new hospital is 2022, and it will provide emergency services, inpatient medical/surgical care, imaging services and a focus on outpatient surgery.

NGHS currently leases the former Chestatee Regional Hospital property from The University System of Georgia Board of Regents, so once NGMC Lumpkin is in full operation, the University of North Georgia (UNG) will utilize the former Chestatee Regional Hospital facility for their highly competitive nursing program, as well as other educational purposes. “These positive changes in our local healthcare landscape create exciting opportunities to enhance the way we teach and prepare our students,” says Dr. Bonita Jacobs, president of the University of North Georgia (UNG). “We look forward to the potential to collaborate with NGHS and other local providers.” Dahlonega resident and former executive director of Lumpkin County’s Development Authority. UNG sophomore named PBC pitcher of the week

LUMPKIN, GA

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG sophomore, Nick Clarno, was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came after Clarno hit a homerun all three games against Palm Beach Atlantic.

Clarno his .455 against Palm Beach Atlantic over the weekend, driving in six runs as the Nighthawks ran their record to 6-0. Clarno had a 1.364 batting percentage, and he opened with a solo shot in the first game before going for 2-for-4 in the second and third games. He also added a double during the finale, scoring a total of four runs and striking out only once in 11 at-bats.

Clarno leads the PBC in slugging percentage, is tied for second in home runs and is seventh in total bases. This is his first weekly honor of his career.

UNG Athletics releases 2019 track and field schedule

DAHLONEGA, GA
Tom Williams, head coach of the University of North Georgia track and field team, has announced the 2019 Nighthawks schedule of events.

The Fifth Annual Cougar Invitational will kick off the season on February 23 and will be hosted by Columbus State. The Nighthawks will then travel to Berry College for the Victor Icebreaker Duals held on March 2.

UNG will then go to Columbus for the Adonica Ferguson Classic on March 9, before going to Emory the weekend of March 22-23 and also March 29-30. The final regular season meet will be in Jacksonville, Alabama, at the JSU Invitational on April 6.

The Nighthawks will then head down to Daytona Beach for the Peach Belt Conference Championships from April 17-19.

UNG women’s soccer seniors earn all-region honors

DAHLONEGA, GA

According to press release from the University of North Georgia Athletic’s Department, UNG women’s soccer seniors, Renee VanHorn and Asa Thorsen, were announced as the newest members of the United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region team. VanHorn earned second team honors, and Thorsen was named to the third team.

VanHorn finished in fourth place at the Peach Belt Conference, with 12 goals for the season. She also added three assists, bringing her collective total to 27 points and six game-winning goals.

Thorsen scored two goals, assisted on three other goals, and was a key player in the midfield for UNG.

UNG will host 32-team high school basketball showcase

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, UNG and Adrian Penland Basketball are coming together to host the North Georgia High School Showcase that will be held on Saturday, December 1 in two facilities across campus.

North Georgia Medical Center’s Orthopedic Services is sponsoring the event, which will feature a face-off between 32 of the state’s highest ranking high school programs in the state. There will be 16 games, of which wight will be held in the new Convocation Center, and the additional eight will be held in UNG’s Memorial Hall.

Tickets are available for $10 for general admission, $5 for ages 6-17, and free to children five and under. One ticket is good for all 16 games, and it also includes admission into both facilities.

Lumpkin County records 7,395 votes in early voting

Pollsters say Republican Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, will need a large turnout in rural counties, in the race against Democrat Stacey Abrams to become Georgia’s next governor, to offset what is expected to be a large turnout in metro Atlanta and the suburbs.

Early voting ended on Friday November 2, and Chief Registrar and Elections Manager, Ashley Peck, reports that during the three-week advanced voting session, Lumpkin County received a total of 7,395 early votes, compared to 9,063 in 2016. Peck also said there is a total of 19,574 active voters in Lumpkin County, which shows an increase of almost 4,000 new registered voters, compared to the 15,618 active voters who were registered in 2016.

Also, 429 absentee ballots have been returned, compared to 569 in 2016. However, Peck confirms that more absentee ballots are being received.

The final election day is Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Nine UNG cross-country runners chosen for All-Academic team by Peach Belt Conference

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the Peach Belt Conference named nine UNG cross-country runners to the All-Academic team on Friday, October 26. The nine Nighthawks are a part of the 36-runner team. UNG had the most runners honored, followed by Georgia College with eight.

The Nighthawk honorees are: Emma Brown, Sarah Buckler, Maria Coughlin, Makayla Ellis, Bree Hammond, Aleah Johnson, Jordan Mund, Kenedi Rodney and Olivia Terwilliger.

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.

UNG women’s soccer team endures loss to No. 3 Columbus State

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the women’s soccer team lost 4-1, to No. 3 Columbus State Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex. The game was broadcast as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase.

Columbus State junior, Riley Clark, netted her first two goals within two minutes of one another starting at the 24th minute, when she took a cross from Kimmy May to put CSU up, 1-0. Clark struck with her second in the 26th minute with a back heel kick after Annie Mayo sent a low cross into the box.

In the 52nd minute, Clark capped off her hat trick with another goal off a May assist. Three minutes later, Columbus State scored their final goal of the contest when Brooke Nail beat her defender one-on-one and pushed the ball to the back of the net to put the Cougars up, 4-0.

North Georgia got on the scoreboard when Bailey Swindell, just seconds after checking into the game for the first time, headed in a corner kick from Rosie Embley.

UNG cross country runner earns top six

DAHLONEGA, GA

Nighthawk Cross-Country freshman, Kaylee Haake

According to a press release from the University of Georgia Athletic Department, Nighthawk Cross-Country freshman, Kaylee Haake, earned 20th place out of 292 runners at the Sand Shark Invitational on Saturday, October 20.

The UNG cross-country team finished in sixth place, beating out every southeast region team. They also finished in third place in the Division II category. Savannah College of Art and Design won overall, followed by Embry-Riddle and Florida Southern.

Haake is a Union Grove High School graduate, and she ran a 19:04, pacing the Nighthawks in the 5k race. UNG sophomore, Aleah Johnson, finished in 26th, with a 19:15. Sophomore Bree Hammond, was only three seconds behind Johnson, finishing in 29th. Nighthawks, Maria Coughlin and Makayla Ellis, also scored for UNG; Coughlin finished in 33rd, and Ellis finished in 45th, respectively.

UNG will travel to Redcliffe Plantation on Beech Island in South Carolina on November 3, to race in the PBC Championship.

Lumpkin County BOE approves application for new JROTC/Science facility funds

LUMPKIN, GA

The Lumpkin County Board of Education approved the Capital Outlay Project Application submitted to the board during the Regular Session on Monday, September 10.

According to the Lumpkin County School System website, Superintendent, Dr. Robert Brown, submitted a recommendation, which states, “making [an] application for funds to construct a JROTC/Science facility with the Georgia Department of Education for State Capital Outlay funds as earned for Lumpkin County in the amount of $595,183”

The board also decided to make the Science wing of the new facility two-stories instead of one, with two new Science classrooms. The board also found a way to save building costs by designing access to the second level either via the stairs or elevator that was included in the previous blueprints, instead of installing a second elevator.

Suspects of Lumpkin County home invasion have been arrested

LUMPKIN, CO.,

Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office have apprehended four suspects of a home invasion that occured on August 17.

The report indicates that Lumpkin County Communications received a 911 call from a resident stating that someone was beating of the door and windows of their home. Upon arrival to the scene, Lumpkin County Deputies discovered the person beating on the door and windows was a victim of home invasion that had occured moments prior. Although the victim was not injured, they were in obvious distress.

The suspects of the home invasion fled the scene of the home invasion by foot when they noticed that deputies had arrived. After canvassing the area, Lumpkin Deputies apprehended the four suspects. Charges are still pending, and an investigation is underway; location of the home invasion has not yet been released.

Sheriff Jarrard thanked the citizens who assisted with information leading to the arrest of the four suspects, as well as the hard work of the deputies that resulted in the arrests, in a statement on Friday, August 17.

The four suspects are: 18-year-old Preston Andrew Anderson, 18-year-old Quintin Chase McConnell, 17-year-old Blake Mitchell McKinzie, and 17-year-old Gavyne Anthony Sowell. All four suspects are residents of Dawson County.
