SSG Albert Linwood Brinson, age 89, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, August 2, 2019.
SSG Brinson was born in New Bern, North Carolina on May 18, 1930 to the late Joseph Cecil and Willie Ethel Day Brinson. Also preceding him in death are his thirteen brothers, four sisters, and three half-sisters. SSG Brinson followed his father, a WWI veteran, in wearing the uniform of his country. His service began as a teenage boy when he entered the United States Army in 1944 during WWII. He served first in England and then in the North Sea along 20 miles on the White Cliffs of Dover. From there he was among the first to enter France for combat in a battle that lasted from October 12, 1944 until April 30, 1945 and included the Battle of the Bulge. SSG Brinson quickly gained rank and joined the 173rd Air Borne Rangers. On January 23, 1951 he was called to duty in Korea during the Korean War. In 1963 SSG Brinson deployed to Vietnam where he served with the 11th Air Borne Rangers.
During his service, SSG Brinson was a Radio Sargent with 114 men under his command. He had 255 successful jumps – 11 of which were in combat. He lived through Presidents and Commanders in Chief Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. He served under General Eisenhower, General MacArthur, and General Patton. SSG Brinson would be among those who shot the 155 mm guns that had a range of over 16 miles. He proudly wore the patch of the 7th Army and taking the famous “7 Steps of Hell”. After his retirement, this soldier proudly recalled the days when he answered freedom’s call and served his country honorably.
He is survived by his wife Dorothy Brinson, Dahlonega; son Albert Linwood, Jr., Texas; grandchildren Jonah Brinson and Arrieanna Brinson; one great-granddaughter; stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law Kathy and Johnny Jones, Dahlonega, and Susan and Joel Bramlett, Ellijay; stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law Richard and Kathy Lee, Texas, and Roger and Regina Clark, Jasper; brother Samuel Brinson, Virginia; sister Lottie Lockey, North Carolina; nine step grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Monday, August 5, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until the service hour Monday at the funeral home.

Lumpkin County prepares for first day of school

LUMPKIN CO., GA
Lumpkin County Students prepare to head back to school, while school faculty and staff have already begun preparations. The pre-planning period for teachers begins on Thursday, (August 1) and will go through Monday, (August 5). The first day of school the 2019-20 school year will begin on Tuesday, August 6th. Open house for all Lumpkin County Elementary Schools is scheduled for Friday, August 2, from 3p.m. until 5p.m.
Lumpkin County Middle School will hold open house for all 6th graders and new students only, on Thursday, August 1, from 3p.m. until 5p.m., and open house for all other LCMS students will be held on Tuesday, August 13, from 3:30p.m. until 5:30p.m.
Lumpkin County High School will hold their open house for freshman, called Freshman Focus, on Thursday, August 1, from 1p.m. until 3p.m, and open house for all other LCHS students will be on Thursday, August 1, from 3p.m. until 5p.m.
School hours for students are as follows:
All elementary schools: 7:50a.m. until 2:50p.m.
LCMS: 7:50a.m. until 2:50p.m.
LCHS: 7:45a.m. until 2:30p.m.
May 22 is the last day of the school year, and students will enjoy early release at 11:30a.m.
LCSS Superintendent, Rob Brown, has taken extra precautions to ensure student safety for elementary school parents who wish to escort their child(ren) to their classrooms the morning of their first day of school. In a press release, Dr. Brown explained, “The safety of our students and staff will always remain our top priority! As a precaution, we will have district level staff on hand to help monitor the comings and going of our visitors during this time.”

Mr. Ralph Edward Littlejohn, age 84, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019.
Ralph was born in Walker County on March 3, 1935 to the late Ralph Russell and Ruby Wallin Littlejohn. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Kathleen Cantrell Littlejohn, brothers Harold Littlejohn, and Charles Littlejohn, and son-in-law George Brown. Ralph served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. He owned and operated Littlejohn Drywall and he was a member of the Fortress Church of Dahlonega.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Eddie and Pam Littlejohn, Dahlonega; daughter Tammie Brown, Dahlonega; grandchildren Heath and Ashley Brown, Kelli Brown, and Stephanie Littlejohn; great-grandchildren Aidan Brown, Brody Littlejohn Tanner, and Skylar Brown; sister and brother-in-law Sue and Dewey Harris; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Mrs. Joyce Jenkins Sullens, age 70, of Dahlonega went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 7, 2019 with her family by her side.
Mrs. Sullens was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on December 9, 1948 to the late David “Buck” and Ruth Abercrombie Jenkins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her grandson Scotty Lingerfelt and her siblings Kenneth Jenkins, Buddy Jenkins, Mary Westbrook, Little Annie and Baby Douglas. Mrs. Sullens was a loving mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren affectionately called her “Nanny”. Mrs. Sullens was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Some of the things she loved were bird watching, gardening, and canning. One thing “Nanny” made sure of was that everyone was going to eat. Mrs. Sullens loved the Lord Jesus with all her heart and even in her courageous battle with cancer she never stopped praising Him.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years William Fred Sullens, Dahlonega; daughter Cathy Wilson, Dahlonega; son and daughter-in-law Greg and Frana Sullens, Jacksonville, FL; daughter and son-in-law Cindy and Vance Voorhees; daughters Michelle Abercrombie, and Tona Loggins, all of Dahlonega; brother Bill Jenkins, Dahlonega; brother and sister-in-law Gene and Gerri Jenkins, Gainesville, FL; grandchildren Stacy Nail, Zachary Wilson, Tavia Sullens, Jake Voorhees, Kiefer Voorhees, Sydney Voorhees, Joshua and Bobbie Abercrombie, and her special caretaker Jordan Abercrombie; seven great-grandchildren including her newest Eveleen Ann Abercrombie that she waited for; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Whitmire and the Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
The family wants to extend their appreciation to the nurses of Northeast Georgia Medical Center 2nd Floor South Tower, Dr. Tanna and the Infusion Center at the Diagnostic Center, and Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center for their care of Mrs. Sullens during her illness.

Mr. Gaines “Ro” Etheridge, age 86, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, May 19, 2019.
Mr. Etheridge was born in Uriah, Alabama on January 27,1933 to the late John Roan and Ethel Wilson Etheridge. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Thompson Etheridge, brothers Ralph Etheridge, and Lamar Etheridge, sisters Jewell Lowery, Mary Nell Norsworthy, Hazel Phillips, and Helen Sargent. Mr. Etheridge was of the Baptist Faith. He was retired from Prime Pump. Mr. Etheridge was affectionately called “Pa” by his family. He loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his children Kenneth R. and Reatha Etheridge, Suches, Teresa Turner and Byron Blackburn, Dahlonega, Keith E. and Denise Etheridge, Dahlonega, and Margaret Etheridge, Murrayville; brother and sister-in-law Johnny Steve and Vera Etheridge, Dahlonega; sister Thelma Phillips, Alabama; sister and brother-in-law Margie and Richard Bohr, North Carolina; twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Mrs. Ruth Ward, age 88, of Dahlonega passed away Friday, May 17, 2019.
Mrs. Ward was born in Fannin County on June 5, 1930 to the late William and Nancy Kendall Hughes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Freeman Ward, sisters Chloe Culley, Odell Hicks, Dean Dean, and Owa Allen. Mrs. Ward retired from Pinetree/Burlington Industries with 36 years of dedicated work. She was a member of Sugar Hill Baptist Church in Fannin County and she attended Philippi Baptist Church. Mrs. Ward was deeply loved by her family and her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Granny Ruth”. She loved quilting and bird watching. When her health allowed, Mrs. Ward loved gardening.
Survivors include her children Roger and Shirley Ward, and Charles Randall “Randy” and Joanne Ward, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Lisa and Clark Rider and Michelle and Shane Whitehead; great-grandchildren Chelseay and Chris Frith, and Avery Whitehead; great-great-grandson Austin Frith; and brother Clyde Hughes.

Mrs. Cora Kathleen Fitts, age 91, of Dahlonega passed away May 9, 2019.
Mrs. Fitts was born in Union County on January 9, 1928 to the late Homer and Mabel Wilkins Gooch. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Fitts; sister Blondene Bryan; brothers Glen Gooch, William Gooch, Tom Gooch, Ervin Gooch, and Ned Gooch.
Mrs. Fitts retired from Burlington Pine Tree Plant after thirty years of service as a spinner operator. She was a volunteer at the Lumpkin County Senior Center and enjoyed gardening, quilting and canning. Mrs. Fitts was a member of The Fountain Church of God of Prophecy in Dahlonega. She was affectionately known as “Mema”.
Mrs. Fitts is survived by her daughter Betty Fitts, Dahlonega; son Ralph E. “Buzz” Fitts, Dahlonega; sisters Inez Crook of Jackson, Clara Kidd of Gainesville, Mary Ann Mayfield of Buckhead, and Sandra Bailey of McDonough.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 14, 2019 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Reverend Bo Robinson will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

Mr. John Henry Lee, Jr., age 76, of Villa Rica, GA passed away Saturday, May 4, 2019.
John was born in Opelika, AL on April 12, 1943 to the late John Henry Lee, Sr. and Montine Harrington Lee Day. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-father Olin Day, son-in-law Jim Freeman and granddaughter Courtney Rose Anderson.
John was a successful businessman and entrepreneur. His work career started early in his dad’s hardware store in Lanett, AL. He then served his country honorably in the United States Army as a medic and medical assistant. After completing his military service, John opened a wholesale merchandise business. Later he changed to a retail business opening Lee’s Clothing and Discount Store in Douglasville, GA. His business flourished and remained successful until he closed it to retire in January of 2019. John and his wife Janice worked side-by-side every day during the entire life of the business.
John was a loving husband and father. Although he had a strong work ethic, he never sacrificed quality time with his children. That quality time included long days on the lake and four-wheeling in the mud. Following the birth of his first grandchild, John’s name quickly changed to “Granddaddy” – a name which he proudly accepted.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Janice Harrison Lee, Villa Rica, GA; daughter and son-in-law Tania and Kevin Lightsey, Cleveland, GA; son and daughter-in-law John and Leanne Lee, Colleyville, TX; daughter and son-in-law Jenny and Chris Anderson, Cleveland, GA; son Jason Lee, Villa Rica, GA; step-sister and brother-in-law Barb and Brian Niccum, Durango, CO; grandchildren Ryan and Chelsea Freeman, Alex and Brandon Ward, Jessica Lee, John Henry Lee, IV, Bailey Anderson, Jacob Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Chesnee Freeman, Emma Lightsey, Davin Lightsey, and Sydney Lee; great-grandchildren Brayden Freeman, Skip Freeman, Zane Ward, and Sawyer Ward; and several other relatives.

Interment will follow at Dahlonega Memorial Park. Jason was a fanatic super sports fan. His favorite teams were the Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Dennis Lee Blackwell, age 65, of Dahlonega passed away Wednesday, March 13, 2019.
Mr. Blackwell was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on May 17, 1953 to the late Carl and Margaret Sullens Blackwell. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson Tylor Massey, brother James Blackwell, and niece Jill Tolbert. Mr. Blackwell drove many miles to provide for his family as a truck driver and he was a member of Living Waters Church.
Survivors include his wife Janice Blackwell; daughters and sons-in-law Shelia and Brian Groves, Pendergrass, and Sirena and Clint George, Dahlonega; sisters and brothers-in-law Barbara and Randy Zidler, Savannah, and Patsy and Lewis Ford, Homer; grandchildren Tiffany Savage, Jacie George, and Keli George; niece Crystal Stephens and nephew Victor Ledford.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 PM Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Tim Sullens will officiate. Interment will follow in Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the service hour on Saturday.

Timothy Wayne Wyatt, age 54, of Dahlonega was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2019. Tim was born August 29, 1964 in Bristol, Tennessee and had lived in Lumpkin County for the past seventeen years. He was a graduate of Etowah High School and was employed by Global Electronic Services as an Electronics Technician. Tim served his country honorably in the United States Army. He was a member of Concord at Dahlonega Baptist Church.
Tim is survived by his wife of eighteen years, Carin O’Donnell Wyatt; children Kayla Wyatt, Noah Wyatt, Emily Wyatt, Sara Wyatt and Micah Wyatt, all of Dahlonega; parents Herbert P. and Karen Kirk Wyatt, Woodstock, GA; and sister Tracy Wyatt Cole, Acworth, GA. Other relatives also survive.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega with Rev. Jeff Pulliam officiating. No visitation is planned.
