Madisyn Echols is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lumpkin Co. Lady Indians!

Echols, a senior forward, posted a trio of solid games last week for the Lady Indians (13-8, 4-5 Region 7-AAA).

She started the week with two points and solid defense in a tough, 39-37 loss to East Hall (7-13, 3-6) on Tuesday, Jan. 14, in Rabbittown.

On Friday, Jan. 17, she posted six points and good work on the boards in a 53-47 region win against Fannin Co. (13-7, 4-5) in Dahlonega.

Echols rounded out the week with another two points and solid all-around play in a 53-35 home victory over area-rival White Co. (15-7, 7-2 Region 7-4A).

For her efforts, Echols is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Dawson Co. boys defeat Lumpkin Co. 58-48

The Dawson Co. Tigers defeated the Lumpkin Co. Indians 58-48 on Tuesday in Dahlonega.

Jasper Gibson scored 23 points for the fourth-ranked Tigers (10-1, 4-0 Region 7-AAA). Campbell Reed also chipped in 16, while Eli Burruss had 15.

Jacob Cumbie led the Indians with 17 points, while Pat Jackson scored 13.

The Indians (4-8, 2-3 Region 7-AAA) scored the first four points of the game to take the early lead. The Tigers responded three consecutive 3-pointers to take a 9-4 lead. The Tigers led 13-7 after one quarter of play.

The Tigers used a 7-2 in the middle of the quarter to extend their lead. They also scored six of the final seven points of the half to take a 28-16 lead into the half.

The second half started with a 7-2 run from the Tigers to take control of the game. The rest of the quarter remained even, with Dawson Co. leading 50-33 heading into the final period.

The Indians didn’t roll over, and fought back to close the lead. They were able to cut the Tigers’ lead to only 58-48 at the end of the game.

The Indians’ next game will be Friday at 7:30 P.M. as they travel to play at Banks Co. High School.

The Tigers will return to action on Friday at home at 7 P.M. against Camp Jewell House.

Peyton Polk is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lumpkin Co. Indians!

Peyton Polk is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lumpkin Co. Indians!

Polk, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, was a constant presence for Lumpkin Co. (4-7, 2-2 Region 7-AAA) throughout two games this week.

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, Polk was a consistent threat as he scored seven points in an overtime, 65-64 win at Fannin Co. in an important road region win.

Polk followed that with a strong performance in a 67-50 loss at Greater Atlanta Christian on Friday, Dec. 13. He tallied nine points, seven rebounds, and three blocks in that game for the Indians.

For his efforts, Polk is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lumpkin Co. Indians!

Lexi Pierce is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Lexi Pierce is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Pierce, a freshman guard, was instrumental in the win against Greater Atlanta Christian on Friday, Dec. 13, in Norcross.

Pierce tied a team-high with 19 points as Lumpkin Co. (7-4, 2-2 Region 7-AAA) earned an important region victory.

The region win was huge for the Lady Indians, as the Lady Spartans are the defending Region 7-AAA champions and reached the second round of the Class AAA tournament last season. The win was also important because it came on the heels of losing a region game at Fannin Co. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 51-38. Pierce scored two points in that game for Lumpkin Co.

Pierce has been a mainstay for Lumpkin Co. this season, surprising many with her effort and talents as a freshman.

For her efforts, Pierce is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Makenzie Caldwell is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Caldwell, a junior post player who is good in the open floor, had an all-around strong performance in a 53-42 win at Cherokee Bluff on Tuesday, Dec. 3. She scored seven points, had six assists, pulled down five rebounds, and added three steals in the win for Lumpkin Co. (6-3, 1-1 Region 7-AAA).

She followed that by chipping in nine points in a tough, 46-43 loss to East Hall on Friday, Dec. 6, in Dahlonega.

Caldwell is one of two juniors on a team that has just one senior, making her experience and leadership a necessity for a team that has been consistently ranked in the top-10 in Class AAA since the season began.

For her efforts, Caldwell is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

 

To be considered for the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week, a player must play in all games the team plays during that week and must not have any unsportsmanlike conduct (ejections, etc.). Stats considered for Player of the Week run from Monday through Saturday, with Player of the Week being selected Sunday each week.

Lumpkin County boys escape East Hall 67-64

The Lumpkin County Indians defeated the East Hall Vikings 67-64 on Friday in Dahlonega. Pat Jackson led the way for the Indians with 28 points and 7 rebounds. Jacob Cumbie also had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Indians picked up their first region win. Lumpkin moves to 3-6 on the season and 1-1 in the region.

The Indians opened the game with a 6-2 run to start the game off fast. The Vikings then scored back to back buckets to tie the game at 6, and the rest of the first quarter was just as even. Lumpkin led 14-13 after one period of play.

The second quarter was just as back and forth as the first until the very end. Jackson scored the final 11 points for the Indians, including a last second three, to help his team take a 31-26 lead into the half.

The third quarter was high scoring, with Lumpkin outscoring East Hall 23-17 in the period. This gave the Indians a 54-43 lead with only one quarter remaining.

East Hall started the 4th quarter off strong with a 6-0 run to open it up. Lumpkin responded with back to back buckets, but the Vikings followed that with an 8-0 run to cut the lead to one. The teams traded a few buckets and some free throws through the rest of the fourth quarter.

Jackson eventually iced the game with 2 free throws with 13 second remaining to give them a 67-62 lead. The Vikings responded with a lay-up, but there wasn’t enough time for them to get the ball back. Lumpkin held on to win 67-64.

The Indians next game will be Tuesday at Fannin County High School at 7:30 P.M.

Gus Faulkner is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Indians!

Faulkner, a junior point guard, played well in two games last week for Lumpkin Co. (5-8, 2-3 Region 7-3A).

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, Faulkner distributed the ball well and played good on-the-ball defense for the Indians in a tough region loss, 58-48, to Dawson Co. (11-2, 4-0). He also added three points.

In his best game of the season Friday, Dec. 20, Faulkner scored 20 points, pulled down six rebounds, and added five assists as the Indians handed the Banks Co. Leopards (9-1, 3-0 Region 8-2A) their first loss of the season 85-67.

For his efforts, Faulkner is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Indians!

Lumpkin County girls fall to East Hall 46-43 at home

The Lumpkin County girls suffered their first region loss of the year on Friday. They hosted East Hall and lost 46-43. Isabel Davenport lead the way for the Lady Indians with 23 points. Makenzie Caldwell also scored 8 for Lumpkin.

The Lady Indians got off to a slow start. They were down 3-0 for the first couple minutes of the game. They eventually woke up with a 7-0 run and led 8-5 after the first quarter.

East Hall opened the second quarter with back to back threes to take the lead. The rest of the quarter was back and forth until the end. Lumpkin ended on a 10-3 run to take a 20-17 lead into the half.

The second half started off slow scoring-wise. Lumpkin eventually broke it open with a 7-0 run to nearly get their lead to double digits. The Lady Vikings responded with a 4-0 run to end the quarter to cut the lead to 28-24.

After Lumpkin opened the 4th quarter with a bucket, East Hall took the lead with a 10-0 run. Lumpkin responded with a 5-2 run to get the game within a point. The Lady Vikings then hit a pair of free throws to make a three point game. Davenport responded with a big three to tie the game at 38.

The teams traded free throws and baskets, with East Hall having a three point lead late. The Lady Indians fired up a three and got the offensive rebound, which was scored to cut the deficit to one. After another pair of free throws from East Hall, Lumpkin had to go the length of the court to tie. They failed to get a shot off and lost the game 46-43.

The Lady Indians’ next game will be Tuesday at Fannin County at 6 P.M.

Kate Jackson is the TeamFYNSports Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Jackson, a freshman post player, scored in double figures in two games last week as Lumpkin Co. (8-5, 2-3 Region 7-3A) split a pair of games.

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, Jackson scored 12 points as the top-10 ranked Lady Indians dropped a home region game 64-51 to Dawson Co. (8-5, 3-1), which is also ranked in the top-10 in Class 3A.

Jackson followed that by scoring a team-high 17 points in a 53-35 win at Banks Co. on Friday, Dec. 20.

TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week: Isabel Davenport, No. 2, junior

Lumpkin Co. junior Isabel Davenport is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Lady Indians!

Davenport led the team in scoring in two games last week as Lumpkin Co. played in the Tabo’s Tipoff Classic at Jefferson High.

The Lady Indians (5-2) went 1-2 in the tournament, but those two losses were by a combined four points.

On Tuesday, Nov. 26, Davenport scored a team-high 18 points in a 45-43 loss to Class 7A’s Etowah.

The day before, Monday, Nov. 25, Davenport scored a team-high 23 points as the Lady Indians took down Class 6A’s Winder-Barrow, 58-39, to earn their only win of the tournament.

Davenport will be an important piece of the puzzle for the Lady Indians, who are ranked in the top 10 in Class AAA.

Lumpkin Co. begins play in Region 7-AAA against Cherokee Bluff at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Flowery Branch.

Jacob Cumbie is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Indians!

Cumbie, a senior guard, had a double-double in a big region win against East Hall on Friday, Dec. 6, in Dahlonega. He posted 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Lumpkin Co. (3-6, 1-1 Region 7-AAA).

Earlier in the week, Cumbie scored seven points in a tough region loss to Cherokee Bluff in Flowery Branch.

Cumbie is one of five seniors for the Indians, who are playing better than their overall record and who should be in position to make the playoffs at the end of the season.

Junior Isabel Davenport had a team-high 21 points in a win at Cherokee Bluff on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The fifth-ranked Lumpkin Co. girls basketball team earned the first Region 7-AAA win of the season last night, Tuesday, Dec. 3, taking down Cherokee Bluff 53-42 in Flowery Branch.

The Lady Indians (6-2, 1-0) were led by junior Isabel Davenport, who poured in 21 points while adding five assists and four steals.

Kate Jackson continued to have a strong start to her freshman campaign, scoring 11 points, pulling down 11 rebounds, and adding three steals.

Fellow freshman Lexi Pierce scored 14 points and added two steals for Lumpkin Co. against Cherokee Bluff (2-5, 0-1).

Junior Makenzie Caldwell had an all-around good game, scoring seven points, dishing six assists, pulling down five rebounds, and adding three steals.

Lumpkin Co. next hosts East Hall at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, in Dahlonega.

Senior Patrick Jackson poured in points last week for the Lumpkin Co. boys basketball team. For his efforts, he’s been named the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the week for the Indians!

Lumpkin Co. (2-5) went 1-2 in the Tabo’s Tippff Classic at Jefferson High last week, losing to Class 6A’s Dacula and 7A’s St. Pius X, but earning a win against fellow Class 3A school Monroe Area.

Against Dacula on Saturday, Nov. 23, Jackson scored 19 points and pulled down four rebounds.

Two days later, he scored 28 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and tallied six steals in Lumpkin Co.’s 77-67 victory.

Against St. Pius X, Jackson scored 22 points to finish off the tournament averaging 23 points per game.

For his efforts, Jackson is the TeamFYNSports Writer’s Player of the Week for the Indians!

Senior Jacob Cumbie scored seven points in a loss to Cherokee Bluff on Tuesday.

The Indians of Lumpkin Co. took a hard region loss last night, Tuesday, Dec. 3, against Cherokee Bluff in Flowery Branch, 82-48.

Senior Peyton Polk continued to play well, scoring 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in the loss to Cherokee Bluff (4-3, 1-0 Region 7-AAA).

Junior point guard Gus Faulkner scored 10 points, while senior Patrick Jackson scored nine, and senior Jacob Cumbie added seven.

Up next for Lumpkin Co. (2-6, 0-1) is a home game against East Hall. That game is set to tip-off at 8:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6, in Dahlonega.
