Harriet McElfresh Dixon, age 98, formerly of Irwin, PA and a resident of Cumming Nursing Home, Cumming, GA, passed away peacefully Friday, July 27, 2018 at the nursing home.

Born June 28, 1920 in Irwin, Westmoreland County, PA, Harriett was the daughter of Alfred and Margaret Allen Radford.   Harriet graduated from Norwin High School. She married H.C. (Bill) McElfresh in 1943 and they resided in Irwin, PA.   Bill was deceased in 1988.

Harriet was a member of First United Methodist Church of Irwin where she taught fourth grade Sunday School for many years.   She devoted her life to her children, family, church and friends. She enjoyed family activities, cooking, and traveling later in life.   Harriet’s fondest memories are of family gatherings during holidays, reunions, and visiting friends.

Harriet married Harry F. Dixon of Roswell, GA in 2001, who preceded her in death November 22, 2016. They were residents of Chambrell Living Center and Brookdale Big Creek in Roswell, GA.

Harriet is survived by a son Ron McElfresh and his wife Marge, and their children Clint McElfresh and Cara McElfresh of Fairbanks, Alaska; a daughter-in-law Dominque Wilfong of Choctaw, OK; grandson Vaughn McElfresh of Wasilla, Alaska; a daughter Connie Cenna and her husband Robert (Bob) of Dahlonega, GA, their children and families William Cenna (Andria), Daniel Cenna (Joanna), and Kenneth Cenna, as well as her late husband’s children Elizabeth Dixon Middlemiss, Christina Dixon Page (Michael), Cynthia Dixon Finegan (Paul), and Robert Dixon (Jacki) and their families.

A celebration of life service will be held later this year.

Mrs. Jessie Mae Barrett, age 94, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018.

Mrs. Barrett was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on March 13, 1924 to the late Rosco and Maude Sheffield Lingerfelt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Cicero Odom Sr.; sons W. M. Odom and Billy Odom; and daughters Barbara Perry and Connie Gooch. Mrs. Barrett loved to travel. Her favorite place to visit was the mountains of North Carolina. Mrs. Barrett was a member of Siloam Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter Shirley Perry, Dahlonega; son R.T. Odom, Dahlonega; son and daughter in law Cicero Jr. and Cita Odom, Dahlonega; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Monday, July 16, 2018 in the chapel of Banister Funeral Home. The Reverend Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Shufford Rogers Jr., age 73, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, June 10, 2018.

Mr. Rogers was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County.  He was known to his family and friends as “P-Nut”.  He was born on August 1, 1944 to the late Shufford Rogers Sr. and Lizzie May Rogers. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer Rogers.  Mr. Rogers enjoyed being outside working in the yard and tending his flowerbed.  He also enjoyed fishing and camping.  He loved his faithful companion chihuahua, “Booger”.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Joanne Rogers; daughters and sons in law Wanda Gravitt and Jerry Moore of Dahlonega; Ann and Andy Bennett of Talking Rock; and Faye Rogers and Rocky Bennett of Gainesville; grandchildren Ralph Rogers, Patty Gravitt, Rebecca Rogers, Ashley Bagby, Melinda Bagby, Lauren Terry and April Gravitt; brother Jackie Rogers and several other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 13, 2018 in the chapel of Banister Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Tuesday.  Mr. Rogers’ wishes were to be cremated after the funeral.

Cale “Pat” Ward, 61 of Dahlonega, GA. Passed away June 6,2018. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Ward and his sister Dana Ward Graveside service will be held at 1:30pm Thursday, June 21 at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.

Mrs. Modean Hester, 81, of Dawsonville (Lumpkin County) passed away on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Northside Forsyth Hospital.

Modean was born May 16, 1937 in Gilmer County to parents Jack and Flora Cantrell Edge. She had lived in Lumpkin County the past 20 years having moved here from Alpharetta. She was a homemaker, a member of Philippi Baptist Church and loved to sing gospel music. She is survived by her husband of almost 60 years (June 2^nd), Rossell Anderson “Jack” Hester, children; Ava Turner (Dennis), Cumming, Teresa Hewatt, Dawsonville, Evondia Woessner (Richard), Blountsville, AL, sisters; Diana Edge, Waleska, GA, Kathleen Wehunt, Canton, GA, brother; John Edge, Gig Harbor, WA, grandchildren; Stephen Turner (Jessica), Chris Turner (Amy), Courtney Vaughan (Allen), four great-grandchildren also survive. Modean is also survived by family by the grace of God, Tina and Rocky Burdett and Lois Thomas.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 27, 2018 in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home . Interment will follow at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery where Rev. Jason Fuller and Rev. Dilce “Dunk” Monroe Pratt age 70 of Buford, Georgia passed away on May 2, 2018.Mr. Pratt is preceded by his father Henry Pratt he is survived by his mother Katheryn Engle Burton, his daughter Kat Pratt of Conyers, Georgia, sisters Sudailya Eddington (Edgar) of Dahlonega and Patricia (Charlie) Heiron of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Mr. Douglas Wayne Loggins, age 67 of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018.

Doug was born in Hall County on December 2, 1950 to the late Henry Kelsey and Nellie Mae Martin Loggins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Larry Loggins and Rev. Dwight Loggins; and nephew Brian Loggins.  Doug was retired as a heavy equipment operator for the Georgia Department of Transportation.  His sense of humor will always be loved and cherished by his friends and family.  Doug was a member of Salem Baptist Church. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent and choir director for many years.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years Sheryl Loggins, Dahlonega; daughters and sons in law Lisa and E.J. Gedding, Dahlonega; Julie and Rev. Jason Fuller, Dahlonega; grandchildren Seth Fuller, Connor Gedding, Cassidy Fuller, Cady Gedding, Joseph Fuller and Lacey Fuller; brother and sister in law Michael and Alice Loggins, Cleveland; sister in law Wanda Loggins, Clayton; special aunt and uncle Maxie and Robert Garrett, Dahlonega; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Salem Baptist Church. The Rev. Jason Fuller, the Rev. Andy Caldwell, Mr. Mike Ferguson, and the Rev. Jamie Chastain will officiate.  Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.

Mrs. Violet Flora Barrett, age 90, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018. She has now gone home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Violet was born in Cartersville, GA on July 10, 1927 to the late Will and Mary Lou Self Lingerfelt. She loved life, meeting people, and talking to people. Violet grew up on a farm and later moved to Atlanta, where she lived with her aunt.  She worked there and later met and married John Henry Barrett, Sr. on June 30, 1950. They were married for 51 years.  When Violet was young and married with small children at home, she enjoyed helping with Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and camping trips. She taught Sunday school with the little ones and helped with the school projects. Violet enjoyed planning trips for her family and traveling was a well-loved favorite.  All trips were made to be educational and fun-packed. Violet enjoyed gardening with John.

As the children grew up Violet and John still enjoyed traveling and gardening. They enjoyed traveling to Homestead, Florida’s military base to visit with their son John Jr. while he was in the military. Violet would enjoy watching John work on projects around the house with John Jr. who lived nearby with his family. Violet and John enjoyed traveling to South Carolina to visit their daughter Patricia and her family.

Violet and John raised their family in the city of Atlanta, but the country where they both were born and raised always held their hearts. Later they built their retirement home in the country where gardening continued as well as a small amount of traveling until the loss of John Barrett Sr., her late husband, in 2001. Violet also enjoyed picture puzzles, reading, planning, organizing, and watching movies and tapes of their children’s and grandchildren’s fun lives and adventures.  Violet was a Christian and was well loved by her family. Her late husband John was also a Christian who always took good care of her and later her children continued that love and care.

In addition to her parents and husband, Violet was preceded in death by her sisters Sible Richmond, Wilma Cantrell, and Evelyn Milton.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law John Jr. and Janice Barrett, Dahlonega; daughter and son in law Patricia Ann and Frank Mitchell, South Carolina; sisters Helen Anderson, Marietta; and Dora Strain, Atlanta; brothers and sisters in law Roy and Freddie Lingerfelt, Alto; Ray and Margaret Lingerfelt, Gainesville; Bob and Sherri Lingerfelt, Montana; Lawrence and Faye Lingerfelt, Dahlonega; and Phillip and Linda Lingerfelt, Dahlonega; 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in the chapel of Banister Funeral Home. The Rev. Marty Murphy will officiate. Interment will follow in Yellow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
