Five UNG women’s soccer players named to All-Region Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five University of North Georgia women’s soccer players were named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Team as announced by the association’s office Monday afternoon.

Taylor Malasek and Olivia Dumphy were each named to the First Team, while Payton Bisso, Rosie Embley and Dani Shartouny were named Third Team Scholar All-Region.

To be eligible for Scholar All-Region recognition, student-athletes must meet the following criteria: has a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or better throughout his/her career, has started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contribute to his/her team, be nominated by his/her head coach of the current College Services member institution and be a junior or above in academic standing or, if a transfer student, in the second year at the school.

Malasek and Dumphy are each eligible for Scholar All-American status. That team will be announced Wednesday afternoon.

UNG women’s soccer lands 3 players on All-Region Team

DAHLONEGA – Three University of North Georgia women’s soccer players were named United Soccer Coaches All-Region Monday as announced by the association’s office.

Taylor Malasek was named to the first team after scoring 17 goals and four assists this season, good for 38 points. Her 17 goals ranks second in the Peach Belt Conference, while her 38 points is tied for third in the league. The junior from Peachtree City, Georgia, was the Elite 15 winner for the league as well as a first team All-Conference honoree. She is now eligible for All-American consideration.

Olivia Dumphy and Maysoon El-Shami each earned second team honors. Dumphy, a senior from Dawsonville, Georgia, earns her first All-Region honor of her collegiate career after bolstering a back line that had a program record 13 clean sheets. She also scored two goals and two assists on her way to a first team All-PBC selection. El-Shami, a freshman from Alpharetta, Georgia, was a first team honoree as well in the league after scoring three goals and an assist from her midfield position.

Malasek Highlights Women’s Soccer Awards

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Taylor Malasek won the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year to highlight the University of North Georgia women soccer team’s awards at the tournament banquet Thursday night.

Playing in her first collegiate season, Malasek was second on the team with nine goals during the year, with game-winners against Georgia College and Limestone. She is tied for eighth in the PBC in goals, she added one assist and is tied for 10th in the league in total points. The Peachtree City, Georgia, native becomes the second Nighthawk to be named the PBC Freshman of the Year, joining Kelsey Martin who received the honor in 2009.

Malasek joined Renee VanHorn (forwards) and Jessi Vaverka (defender) on the PBC’s All-Conference second team. Asa Thorsen (midfielder) and Michelle Allen were named to the first team in their first year at UNG after transferring from Armstrong State.

The Nighthawks were also given the PBC Regular Season Championship trophy during the event.

UNG will battle UNC Pembroke in the PBC semifinals tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Georgia.

Women’s Soccer Shoots Past Francis Marion, 5-0

DAHLONEGA – Renee VanHorn had two goals and the defense didn’t allow a shot as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team led from start to finish in a 5-0 win over Francis Marion Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks improve to 3-0-0 in Peach Belt play and 5-1-2 overall.

“We did exactly what we needed to do,” said head women’s soccer coach Chris Adams. “I thought everyone came in and contributed without letting the level of play drop tonight.”

VanHorn opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the fourth minute of play and followed that up with her second goal of the match in the 15th minute off a Payton Bisso pass.

Taylor Malasek increased the UNG lead with a shot from just outside the box after receiving a pass from Rosie Embley. The Nighthawks made the score 4-0 at halftime when Daizah Patterson scored her first goal of the season with seconds remaining in the half. Bisso scored the game’s final goal right at the beginning of the second half off a pass from Brynn Finneran.

NOTES
– UNG took 24 shots and allowed none for the Patriots in the contest. In the only two matchups against FMU in school history, the Nighthawks have only allowed one shot.

– North Georgia stretches its unbeaten streak to seven games this season. The Nighthawks are also unbeaten in its last 13 PBC matches.

The Nighthawks travel to the other side of Blood Mountain to take on Young Harris on Wednesday, September 27. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Nighthawks Cage Second-Ranked Cougars, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Behind a three-goal team performance and a four-save effort by Hannah Goudy, the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team upset the No. 2 Columbus State Cougars, 3-2, Wednesday night at CSU’s Walden Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks improve to 4-1-2 and 2-0-0 in Peach Belt Conference play.

The scoring started early for both teams. Renee VanHorn headed home a goal just over 90 seconds into the match, but the Cougars answered with a goal in the fifth minute to tie the match, 1-1.

North Georgia retook the lead in the 29th minute when VanHorn found Taylor Malasek for a left-footed shot that went inside the post. The Nighthawks doubled their lead in the 62nd minute as Rosie Embley put home a shot from 25 yards out to put UNG up, 3-1.

The Cougars pushed forward and found a goal in the 89th minute, but Goudy and the back line for UNG stood strong late to preserve the win.

NOTES
– North Georgia snaps a eight-match losing streak to the Cougars with the win. The win also breaks CSU’s streak of consecutive unbeaten matches at the Walden Soccer Complex that dated back to the last time UNG beat the Cougars in 2013.

– The win serves as the UNG’s first over a ranked opponent since 2014 when the Nighthawks defeated No. 17 Clayton State on October 15, 2014, by a score of 5-0 in Dahlonega.

– UNG took just 10 shots, but eight of those shots were on goal.

STAT OF THE NIGHT
11 – Of Columbus State’s 19 shots, 11 of them were either blocked by a Nighthawk defender or saved by Goudy.

DAHLONEGA – Taylor Malasek netted two goals, including one just 2:08 into the contest, as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team shot past No. 23 Limestone, 3-0, Saturday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex. North Georgia improves to 7-3-2 in 2017 and 2-1 against top-25 teams.

Malasek scored the first goal off a long pass from Jessi Vaverka to put UNG up, 1-0, early. Both teams settled in for the remainder of the first half, but Renee VanHorn put home her eighth goal of the season in the 52nd minute on a header sent to the far post.

The freshman from Peachtree City, Georgia, got her second goal of the match when Rosie Embley sent a rolling pass across the front of the frame that sent the match to its final score.

NOTES
– North Georgia held the Saints to just two shots in the second half of play. Limestone averaged 20 shots per match coming in to the contest, but the Nighthawks held them to eight.

– Malasek is now tied for first in the Peach Belt in goals scored with three other players having scored nine goals this year.

– UNG has not allowed a goal against Limestone in the last three meetings, outscoring the Saints 9-0 in those matches.

The Nighthawks get a week off before jumping back into Peach Belt play on Saturday, October 14, at USC Aiken. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

UNG women’s soccer defeats Mount Olive, 1-0

HICKORY, N.C. – Taylor Malasek scored in the ninth minute, and the back line made it hold up as the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team advanced on in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with a 1-0 win over Mount Olive Friday afternoon.

Payton Bisso sent a cross in to Rosie Embley, who found just enough of a touch to get to a wide open Malasek alone in the 18. The junior calmly put the shot away above the Trojan keeper to give UNG all it needed for the win.

NOTES
– The Nighthawks have never lost an opening round game in the NCAA tournament in its six appearances.
– Previously unbeaten, the Trojans were only able to get off 10 shots total with Morgan Ramby saving the only four on target.
– Seventh-seeded Wingate upset second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the second game of the day, 4-0.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will battle Wingate on Sunday at 2 p.m. to determine who moves on to the regional final in two weeks.

Malasek Nets Two Goals in Women’s Soccer 5-1 Win Over Lander

DAHLONEGA – Freshman Taylor Malasek had her first career two-goal match as the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team defeated Lander, 5-1, Wednesday evening at the UNG Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks improved to 4-2-0 in Peach Belt Conference play with the win.

“After they scored to go 1-1, we were able to put our foot back on the glass,” said head women’s soccer coach Chris Adams. “I thought we played a fantastic game in the second half.”

Malasek scored the match’s opening goal in the 11th minute off a deflection from Michelle Allen‘s cross into the box that fell right to her feet. Lander’s Sara Flores scored three minutes later to even the match at 1-1.

Both teams traded shots throughout the next 30 minutes until Rosie Embley bent a shot just under the crossbar in the 43rd minute from 25 yards out to put UNG up, 2-1, going to halftime.

After a foul was drawn in the box, Malasek put home a penalty kick in the 63rd minute to extend the Nighthawk lead. The final two goals were scored by Allen in the 78th and Jordyn Missel in the 87th, both being their first goal of the season.

NOTES
– With the win, UNG tied the all-time series with Lander at 7-7. The Nighthawks have now won three in a row against the Bearcats.

– Missel’s goal came just nine seconds after stepping on the field. The goal was also the first of her career.

– North Georgia took five shots in the second half, three of which found the back of the net.

The Nighthawks will host No. 23 Limestone in non-conference play on Saturday, October 7. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
