UNG releases 2022 women’s soccer schedule
Business August 15, 2022DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team has released its schedule for the 2022 season. The season slate features five programs that received NCAA Tournament bids last season and a road matchup against a newly added member of the Peach Belt Conference.
Faced with a challenging schedule this season, head coach Kayley Ralton believes that the competition will strengthen her team and prepare them for future challenges.
“I truly believe for our players to reach their full potential they need to be challenged as often as possible. By playing the top teams we will learn to face different challenges in every game, ultimately that will make us stronger and much more prepared.”
The Nighthawks open the season with six consecutive home games. The home opener will be against former Peach Belt Conference member UNC Pembroke. UNC Pembroke went 15-5 in their first season as a member of the Conference of Carolinas and received a bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the conference championship. UNG has won the last two meetings between the schools and owns a record of 5-2-1 at home versus the Braves.
UNG’s next two fixtures feature two South Carolina squads when they host Anderson on August 27th for Alumni Day, then North Greenville on the following Wednesday, August 31st, for the second matchup between the two programs all time.
North Georgia has won all eight games versus Anderson, most recently in the 2019 season.
UNG began their series last season against North Greenville when the Nighthawks came away with the road victory 1-0 over the Crusaders.
The Nighthawks will then have one more contest before beginning conference play when they face their second 2021 NCAA Tournament participant of the season in Lee on September 4th for Cancer Awareness Day.
Lee earned the top seed in the South region last season after going 16-0 in the regular season and winning the Gulf South Conference Championship. The programs have played four times, twice in the 2004 season and most recently in 2018.
North Georgia will then move on to Peach Belt Conference play by hosting Georgia Southwestern on September 10th for Military Appreciation Night before renewing their Battle of Blood Mountain Rivalry on September 14th against Young Harris.
The Nighthawks are a combined 29-1 against the two programs, suffering the lone loss on the road at Young Harris in the 2017 season.
A PBC road fixture at 2021 NCAA Tournament selection, Flagler College, followed by the first road non-conference game of the season against Emmanuel College, precede a two-game homestand versus Clayton State on September 24th and Lander University on September 28th for Youth Soccer Night.
UNG owns a 10-4-2 record versus Clayton State since 2010 and has hosted just three matchups since 2012.
North Georgia has dominated the series versus Lander since 2015 winning six of the last seven games. Lander posted a record of 11-5-1 last season and finished second in the Peach Belt Conference regular season standings.
UNG will head on the road for their debut in Bluffton, S.C. for a battle against the newest addition to the Peach Belt Conference, USC Beaufort. This will be the first ever matchup between the two programs.
The Nighthawks will face Albany State on the road before returning to Lynn Cottrell Park for Senior Night and UNG’s regular-season finale versus USC Aiken on October 12th.
North Georgia wraps up the rest of the season on the road with a weekend matchup against Georgia College before ending the season with two straight 2021 NCAA Tournament teams in Lenoir-Rhyne and Columbus State.
Lenoir-Rhyne comes off a run to the Final Four last season falling to eventual National Champion, Grand Valley State, in the semifinals. The two programs met last season as North Georgia defeated the Bears 1-0 on the road.
Columbus State, the reigning Peach Belt Conference Champion, earned the top seed in the Southeast region before falling in the NCAA Tournament to fellow Peach Belt member Flagler.

UNG women close out season with 2-0 win over Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team used stifling defense and a pair of goals to earn a 2-0 win in the regular season finale Saturday at Georgia Southwestern.
North Georgia got on the board in the 40th minute when Skylar Abbott scored her first goal of her collegiate career. After leading by a goal at the break, UNG doubled its lead as Taylor Malasek found Katey Derkay for the final goal of the match in the 52nd minute.
NOTES
– UNG shut down GSW defensively, giving up just four shots, all of which were taken in the first half.
– With the win, North Georgia moves into a tie for fourth with Clayton State in the league standings. However, since the Lakers beat UNG in the regular season, Clayton State earns the fourth seed and will play host to the Nighthawks in the quarterfinal round.

North Georgia travels to Clayton State in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Tournament Saturday. Game time will be announced early next week.
Nighthawks defeat Georgia College 1-0 in women’s soccer

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — After nearly 103 minutes, the University of North Georgia women’s soccer team stretched the winning streak to six with a 1-0 win over Georgia College Saturday evening.
North Georgia played most of the first half out of the Bobcat half but had nothing to show for it as all four shots taken by UNG failed to find the back of the net. Both teams had numerous opportunities in the second half but with no score after 90 minutes, the game went to extra time.
The Nighthawks continued to press forward in the final portion of the match as Cat Watry’s cross was blocked. Nikki Gomez took the ball and fired a shot that was saved, but Abbie Crane picked the rebound and put it home through contact to give UNG the win.
NOTES
– This was the 10th time a match between UNG and GC was decided by a single goal. North Georgia is 2-0-3 in games that have advanced into the second overtime period.
– Morgan Ramby finished the night with four saves.
– Prior to the game, Ramby, Jazmin Adlam, Taylor Malasek and Bailey Swindell were honored as part of Senior Day.

UNG defeats Young Harris, 1-0 in Women’s Soccer

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team took down Young Harris Saturday night, 1-0, earning the upper hand toward a Battle of Blood Mountain point for the Nighthawks.
It took just 81 seconds for North Georgia to find the only goal of the night as Taylor Malasek had her shot saved, but the rebound came back to Abbie Crane who put the ball in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
From there, both defenses prevailed, allowing just four shots each on goal throughout the 90 minutes.
NOTES
– Morgan Ramby earned her second straight clean sheet, making four saves on the night.
– Dating back to last season, Crane has scored in four of her last six matches.

Nighthawks women’s soccer team earns draw with Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team scored three straight goals in the first half and then held on to earn a 3-3 draw at Carson-Newman Thursday afternoon.
After an opening goal by the Eagles in the 11th minute, Abbie Crane answered with her first goal in the 23rd minute on a breakaway to knot the game up at 1-1. Seven minutes later, Taylor Malasek fired a rocket past the C-N keeper from 35 yards out to give UNG its first lead of the night. North Georgia extended the lead to 3-1 on Crane’s second goal in the 40th minute.
Carson-Newman responded in a big way in the second half, coming out and scoring just three minutes into the second half and again in the 65th minute to tie the match. From there, the Nighthawks saw the game out to finish with a draw.
NOTES
– Crane earned her second career brace. Her first two-goal outing came back in February against Francis Marion.
– Carson-Newman took 13 shots in the second half to UNG’s four. Both teams had seven shots on goal.
– The draw is the first in a season opener since 2009 when UNG tied Tampa, 2-2. It is also the first time in program history that UNG has scored three goals in a draw.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer program had three players selected to the Preseason All-Conference team, the Peach Belt office announced Wednesday morning. Additionally, the Nighthawks were picked to finish third in the league standings by the coaches.
A junior forward from Peachtree City, Georgia, Abbie Crane was a first-team All-Conference selection last spring and was also named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, Team of Academic Distinction, D2ADA Academic Achievement Award and a United Soccer Coaches Player of Distinction. In addition to her soccer accolades, Crane was also named All-Conference in women’s track for the 4×100 relay. In the spring season, she scored four goals with three assists in 10 starts, tying for sixth in the PBC in goals and fourth in assists and points.
A sophomore midfielder from Alpharetta, Georgia, Maysoon El-Shami was a second team All-Conference honoree in the spring after first team honors came in 2019. In addition to her Team of Academic Distinction accolade, she was a PBC Honor Roll Gold Scholar and D2ADA Academic Achievement Award winner. In seven games in the spring, she netted a goal with four assists.
A senior forward from Peachtree City, Taylor Malasek was named the PBC conference nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year and was a first-team All-Conference selection last spring. She was also named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll, Team of Academic Distinction and the D2ADA Academic Achievement Award as well as a United Soccer Coaches Player of Distinction. Malasek started all 10 games with three goals and three assists, including two game-winners, tying for fourth in the PBC in assists and 10th in points.
North Georgia was picked third behind top ranked Flagler and No. 20 Columbus State in the poll. Georgia College was fourth, followed by Lander and Young Harris in a tie for fifth.
The season kicks off in eight days at UNG travels to Carson-Newman.

DAHLONEGA – The 2021-22 athletic season is set to kick off as the University of North Georgia will have its first athletic events of the year this week, including the first home event of the season and the first full capacity home soccer match in nearly 22 months. This season’s weekly preview is presented by Northeast Georgia Health System, the official healthcare partner of UNG Nighthawk Athletics.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
The women’s soccer team will open up the season on the road at Carson-Newman Thursday afternoon with kickoff set for 3 p.m. The Nighthawks, under head coach Kayley Ralton, finished as the No. 2 seed in the Peach Belt during the spring season, falling to Columbus State in the semifinals of the league tournament.
North Georgia will be led by Preseason All-Conference honorees Abbie Crane, Maysoon El-Shami and Taylor Malasek. UNG was picked to finish third in the league by the head coaches.
Carson-Newman was picked fifth in the South Atlantic Conference preseason poll and had five Preseason All-SAC nods, including two on the first team in Emilee Futrell and Addie Henry.
MEN’S SOCCER
North Georgia will open up the season at home Thursday at 5 p.m. against Erskine. UNG, led by head coach Pat Parris, will be looking to get back to the league tournament after finishing outside the top four in the spring.
The Nighthawks were tabbed fifth in the preseason poll released last week.
Erskine was selected third in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll, garnering three first place votes. The Flying Fleet were 6-0 in the spring season, winning the conference regular season championship.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
The UNG cross country team will open up the season Friday morning at 9 a.m. at Kennesaw State. The 4K race will take place at Noonday Park in Kennesaw.
The Nighthawks were chosen as the favorites to win the PBC championship after falling in a tiebreak a year ago to Flagler. Taking three first place votes in the poll, UNG will be led by returning All-Conference honorees Claire Mills, Sydney Bolyard and Karmen LeRoy, all of which finished in the top eight of the conference meet in 2020.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Five University of North Georgia women’s soccer players were named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region Team as announced by the association’s office Monday afternoon.
Taylor Malasek and Olivia Dumphy were each named to the First Team, while Payton Bisso, Rosie Embley and Dani Shartouny were named Third Team Scholar All-Region.
To be eligible for Scholar All-Region recognition, student-athletes must meet the following criteria: has a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or better throughout his/her career, has started more than 50 percent of all games and significantly contribute to his/her team, be nominated by his/her head coach of the current College Services member institution and be a junior or above in academic standing or, if a transfer student, in the second year at the school.
Malasek and Dumphy are each eligible for Scholar All-American status. That team will be announced Wednesday afternoon.

DAHLONEGA – The NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Committee announced the field of 56 teams for the 2019 NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Championship, and the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team earned the No. 3 seed in the Southeast Region.
The Nighthawks will battle sixth-seeded Mount Olive on Friday at 3 p.m. in Hickory, North Carolina. The winner of that game will play the winner of second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne and seventh-seeded Wingate. The Bears, as the No. 2 seed, were awarding hosting rights for the opening rounds of the regional.
On the other side, top-seeded Flagler will welcome No. 4 Lincoln Memorial, No. 5 UNC Pembroke and No. 8 Catawba.
Mount Olive comes into the tournament with a 14-0-3 record, winning both the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament championships. UNG has won the only two matchups against the Trojans with the last matchup coming back in 2012, a 7-0 win for North Georgia.

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – On a rainy night on the other side of Blood Mountain, Olivia Dumphy scored two goals off free kicks to lead the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team past Young Harris, 2-0, Wednesday.
Dumphy’s first free kick came in the 20th minute when she pushed one past the keeper low and in the left corner to put UNG up, 1-0. Nearly 20 minutes later, another free kick was awarded to UNG at the top corner of the penalty box, and Dumphy curled one home inside the far post.
As the rain fell harder in the second half, North Georgia kept Young Harris at bay, allowing very few opportunities for the Mountain Lions to find a goal.
NOTES
- This was Dumphy’s second career brace, scoring twice against Converse in her second career appearance back in 2016 against Converse.
- North Georgia now has 10 clean sheets on the year, tying the program record set in 2015.
- The Nighthawks outshot YHC in the contest, 19-6.

HICKORY, N.C. – Taylor Malasek scored in the ninth minute, and the back line made it hold up as the No. 18 University of North Georgia women’s soccer team advanced on in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with a 1-0 win over Mount Olive Friday afternoon.
Payton Bisso sent a cross in to Rosie Embley, who found just enough of a touch to get to a wide open Malasek alone in the 18. The junior calmly put the shot away above the Trojan keeper to give UNG all it needed for the win.
NOTES
– The Nighthawks have never lost an opening round game in the NCAA tournament in its six appearances.
– Previously unbeaten, the Trojans were only able to get off 10 shots total with Morgan Ramby saving the only four on target.
– Seventh-seeded Wingate upset second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the second game of the day, 4-0.

UNG women’s soccer team defeats Limestone 3-1

The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team remains undefeated against Limestone after walking away with a 3-1 victory over the Saints Wednesday.
Three minutes after Limestone tied the game in the first half, freshman Abbie Crane blasted a shot into the net to take the lead. The Nighthawks struck first in the 13th minute when Dani Shartouny intercepted a low goal kick and took it herself to goal, taking the early lead. Limestone brought it back to even in the 25th minute on Megan O’Conner’s fifth goal of the young season.
Right after the Saint goal, Crane checked in and, three minutes later, found the net off a rebounded shot, giving the Nighthawks a 2-1 lead headed to halftime.
The Nighthawks found insurance in the 84th minute when Taylor Malasek finished off a counter started by Shartouny to push UNG to their third win of the season.

The Flames wasted little time getting on the board as Devin Healy scored from distance in the seventh minute to take an early lead. North Georgia answered in the 22nd minute as Malasek sent a rocket toward the frame and off of Lee’s keeper into the net to tie the game, 1-1.
Healy scored again just 10 minutes later, again from outside of the box, to give the Flames a 2-1 lead headed to halftime.
North Georgia played with more intensity in the second half and finally broke through after Abbie Crane drew a penalty that Embley put home to tie the game at two. As the game looked to be going to overtime, Lee took advantage of a called foul on UNG just outside of the box as Kelsey Yoder bent a shot inside the near post off the free kick for the game winner.
