Lady Indians cap off non-region play with 11-0 win

The Lumpkin County Lady Indians softball team finished off their non-region play on a positive note. They won their third game of the week against the Chestatee Lady War Eagles at home on Thursday.
The Lady War Eagles showed up ready to fight for a come back from their 17-0 loss against the Lady Indians on Tuesday. Shortstop K.T. Palmieri hit a leadoff single for the Lady War Eagles in the top of the first. Unfortunately the next couple of batters were unable to put the ball into play like they needed, and the Lady War Eagles left one stranded going into the bottom of the inning.
The Lady Indians spent the next couple of innings battling to put runs on the board. Starting pitcher Natalie Robinson drilled a double to center field, and catcher Natalie Schubert brought in the first run of the game right after with a single to left field.

During their next turn to bat the Lady Indians scored a total of six runs to bump the score up 7-0. Hayley Voyles hit a single to center field, and an error on the Lady War Eagles allowed the runners to advance. A string of back-to-back walks and singles gained the Lady Indians three more runs. This drive was capped off by a double from Schubert that brought in three runners. After some impressive offense the Lady Indians left the inning with a comfortable lead.
The Lady War Eagles fought over the next couple of innings to put runs on the board. A couple of singles put the ball into play, but great defense from the Lady Indians held them back.
In the bottom of the fourth the Lady War Eagles walked Robinson and Lauren English. With her teammates in great scoring position, substitute catcher Grace Jones launched a double to left field to score a run. Two batters later, Voyles sent the ball to left field again to bring home two Lady Indians. Another error on the Lady War Eagles gave Voyles time to come home, and the Lady Indians went from an 8-0 lead to an 11-0 lead. After the Lady War Eagles were unable to put anything else on the board in the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Indians won on another run rule 11-0.
Starting pitcher for the Lady Indians Natalie Robinson pitched a total of four and a half innings allowing no runs with five strikeouts. The Lady Indians have a record of 4-4 going into their first region game against Dawson County on Monday.
“Tomorrow we’re gonna work,” said head coach Joe Jones about preparing for region play. “We’re gonna have a good workout tomorrow, give them a little time to recuperate this weekend and hopefully go and play with a lot of confidence on Monday.”
Lumpkin County earns first win of season in defeat of Chestatee

The Lumpkin County Boys played a complete game in their 67-43 win over Chestatee on Tuesday night in Dahlonega. They won every quarter and only allowed six points in the second quarter. Their defense stifled the War Eagles with plenty of blocked shots and an excellent effort on the boards.

Patrick Jackson was all over the court for Lumpkin Tuesday night with 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Jacob Cumbie put up 16 points and five rebounds, and Peyton Polk had 11 points, six boards, and a plethora of blocks.
The Indians opened the game on an 8-2 run to get the quick lead. After Chestatee ended the run with a 3-pointer, Chandler Pulley responded with a 3-pointer of his own. Lumpkin had a 20-12 lead after one quarter of play.
The defense of the Indians clamped up the Chestatee offense in the second. They outscored them 15-6 in the quarter to take a commanding 35-18 lead into the half.
Lumpkin County opened the second half with a dunk by Polk, and they never looked back. The scoring in the quarter was fairly even, but the Indians had all the momentum. They led 52-29 at the end of the third.

The Indians won the fourth quarter 15-14 in an almost equal quarter of play. The game started to get physical, but Lumpkin County played strong and won the game 67-43.
Their next game is Friday against Banks County at 8:30 PM.
White County releases approved 2018 football schedule

The White County Warriors had an impressive 2017 football season. Coming off an abismal 1-9 season in 2016, the Warriors came out swinging and scored some big wins early in 2017; defeating Franklin (33-0), Lumpkin (66-14) and Habersham Central (24-21) before dropping a tough loss to Rabun County (49-26).
The Warriors came back the following week and knocked down North Hall (28-18), who’s only other loss to a AAAA power came in the final seconds against Pickens County (42-35) where the Trojans marched down the field and came up just short as time expired.
In 2018, the Warriors will once again have an exciting schedule to kick off the season, and there’s no doubt they’ll be looking to duplicate and even improve upon their 7-4, 2-2 season from last year.
With games at Lumpkin County and then home against Habersham Central, the Warriors kick the season off much like they did in 2017. However, put a big red circle around the Sept 7 game at Pickens County, where PHS head coach Chris Parker is likely reloading rather than rebuilding this season. The game pits two quality AAAA programs against each other in non-region play, with White representing Region 7-AAAA and Pickens representing Region 6-AAAA. Both teams were eliminated early in post-season play last year, but both teams proved to be fearsome opponents on the gridiron regardless of home/away.
After the Pickens game, the Warriors schedule doesn’t let up.
The Warriors enjoyed a 10-pt victory over North Hall last season, but the Trojans played much better football as the season continued, and was the #TeamFYNSports Most Improved Team in Region 7-AAA last season. The Warriors will look to defeat the Trojans (9/14), before taking the drive over to Marist for their first game in region play. Marist, as the whole world is aware, is the defending region champion in Region 6. What’s interesting about Marist is although they won their region, defeating rival Blessed Trinity 25-24 early in the season. Two months later, the two teams met again in the State Championship and Blessed Trinity defeated the War Eagles 16-7. Undoubtedly, Marist will look to return to the final in 2018, but they will have to go through White County first.
Perhaps the best part of the Warriors’ schedule this year is the break between facing Marist (9/21) and Blessed Trinity (11/2), although the Warriors will need to defeat Flowery Branch, West Hall, Denmark and Chestatee during the interim.
How will the 2018 season fare for the Warriors of White County? It’s too early to tell. Rest assured the team will be preparing accordingly and TeamFYNSports looks forward to reporting on the 2018 season from the sidelines this fall.

The Mountain Football League playoffs have finally reached their final destination for 2017: Super Bowl Saturday. This weekend, several of North Georgia’s finest young athletes will meet on the gridiron at Fannin County High School, battling to take home the league’s top honor of Super Bowl Champions.
Here are the results from last weekend’s final round of the playoffs:
6U: Fannin defeated Gilmer 22-0. Will play East Hall in the Super Bowl. East Hall defeated Chestatee 34-0.
7U: Fannin defeated Dawson 32-0. Will play Gilmer in Super Bowl. Gilmer defeated Pickens 46-0.
8U: Union defeated Fannin 20-0. Will play Chestatee in Super Bowl. Chestatee defeated Gilmer 25-19.
9U: Chestatee defeated West Hall 34-8. Will play Pickens in Super Bowl. Pickens defeated Dawson 26-0.
10U: Fannin defeated Gilmer 29-0. Will play Dawson in Super Bowl. Dawson defeated Union 12-0.
11U: Chestatee defeated Fannin 20-7. Will play Gilmer in Super Bowl. Gilmer defeated Dawson 7-6.

The MFL consists of Chestatee, Dawson, East Hall, Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Union and West Hall; and age divisions begin with 6u (under 6-years-old) and go up to 7th-grade. Lumpkin County girls take down Chestatee, move to 3-0

The first half was close, but the Lumpkin County girls outscored the Lady War Eagles 13-3 in the third quarter to pull away and win the game 48-27 Tuesday night in Dahlonega. Kate Jackson lead the way for the Lady Indians with 17 points in the game. Lexi Pierce also chipped in 12 points as the two girls outscored the entire Chestatee team.

The first quarter was a defensive battle, with Chestatee coming out with a 5-4 lead. Makenzie Caldwell and Madisyn Echols each scored to keep the Lady Indians in the game.
The offenses shook off the rust in the second quarter. Lumpkin took an 11-8 lead before the Lady War Eagles went on a quick 6-0 run to take a 14-11 lead. The Lumpkin County girls responded well with two buckets to take the lead into the half. Pierce stole the ball and got a layup to end the half, giving her team the 15-14 halftime lead.
The second half was all Indians, as they scored the first five and last eight points of the third quarter to take a 28-17 lead into the final quarter.

Chestatee tried throwing a press defense at the Lumpkin girls, but they broke it with ease. The Indians put up 20 points in the final quarter to extend their lead to a comfortable margin. They scored the last six points of the game and won their home-opener 48-27 over Chestatee.
The Indians’ next game is Friday as they play host to Banks County at 7:00 PM.
