Nine UNG cross-country runners chosen for All-Academic team by Peach Belt Conference

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the Peach Belt Conference named nine UNG cross-country runners to the All-Academic team on Friday, October 26. The nine Nighthawks are a part of the 36-runner team. UNG had the most runners honored, followed by Georgia College with eight.
The Nighthawk honorees are: Emma Brown, Sarah Buckler, Maria Coughlin, Makayla Ellis, Bree Hammond, Aleah Johnson, Jordan Mund, Kenedi Rodney and Olivia Terwilliger.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.

UNG women’s soccer team endures loss to No. 3 Columbus State

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the women’s soccer team lost 4-1, to No. 3 Columbus State Saturday night at the UNG Soccer Complex. The game was broadcast as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase.
Columbus State junior, Riley Clark, netted her first two goals within two minutes of one another starting at the 24th minute, when she took a cross from Kimmy May to put CSU up, 1-0. Clark struck with her second in the 26th minute with a back heel kick after Annie Mayo sent a low cross into the box.
In the 52nd minute, Clark capped off her hat trick with another goal off a May assist. Three minutes later, Columbus State scored their final goal of the contest when Brooke Nail beat her defender one-on-one and pushed the ball to the back of the net to put the Cougars up, 4-0.
North Georgia got on the scoreboard when Bailey Swindell, just seconds after checking into the game for the first time, headed in a corner kick from Rosie Embley.

UNG cross country runner earns top six

DAHLONEGA, GA
According to a press release from the University of Georgia Athletic Department, Nighthawk Cross-Country freshman, Kaylee Haake, earned 20th place out of 292 runners at the Sand Shark Invitational on Saturday, October 20.
The UNG cross-country team finished in sixth place, beating out every southeast region team. They also finished in third place in the Division II category. Savannah College of Art and Design won overall, followed by Embry-Riddle and Florida Southern.
Haake is a Union Grove High School graduate, and she ran a 19:04, pacing the Nighthawks in the 5k race. UNG sophomore, Aleah Johnson, finished in 26th, with a 19:15. Sophomore Bree Hammond, was only three seconds behind Johnson, finishing in 29th. Nighthawks, Maria Coughlin and Makayla Ellis, also scored for UNG; Coughlin finished in 33rd, and Ellis finished in 45th, respectively.
UNG will travel to Redcliffe Plantation on Beech Island in South Carolina on November 3, to race in the PBC Championship.

Ralph Lingerfelt: Obituary

Mr. Ralph Lingerfelt, age 82, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018.
Mr. Lingerfelt was a native and life long resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on April 13, 1936 to the late Cicero and Madge Mincey Lingerfelt. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son-in-law Terry Chafin; sisters Edna Tate, Bonnie Gardiner, and Doris Dillon; brothers Ben Lingerfelt, Hubert Lingerfelt, Gene Lingerfelt, M.C. Lingerfelt, Ronald Lingerfelt, and J.B. Lingerfelt.
Ralph was a loving husband and father. He loved his community and always extended a hand to help anybody he could. When it came time for his garden to come in he loved to give vegetables to his neighbors and friends. Ralph loved to hunt and fish. He was affectionately called ‘Papa’ by his grandchildren. Ralph was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Juhline Lingerfelt; daughter Sonja Chafin; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Jacky Moss, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Megan Chafin and Ryan Boschert, Jessica and Tyler Carpenter, Ashlee and Billy Craig, and Jordan Moss; great-grandchildren Terry Lee Chafin Carpenter, Jackson Craig, and Grayson Craig; sister Lois Arthur, Dahlonega; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and David Mize, Dacula; sister-in-law Bonnie Lingerfelt; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Tuesday, October 16, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson – Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in Bethlehem Jones Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Frances Smith Johnson: Obituary
Obituaries October 5, 2018
Frances Smith Johnson age 94 of Gainesville, GA passed away on September 24, 2018. She was a native of Long Island New York. Fran Johnson served as a secretary to General Eisenhower in Frankfurt, Germany 1945-1946 assisting in the wrapping up after the war’s end. While in Frankfurt, Fran met a dashing Major in the Air Force (Burr N Johnson, Jr) who she subsequently married, raised 6 children with (Burr III, Nancy, Peter, Wendy, Tracy, & Kelly) in Washington, DC. Burr III died while in the military in 1977 and Burr Jr died in 1980. Once children were raised, at age 40, Fran immersed herself in Development work at Landon School for Boys in Bethesda, MD, St. Albans School for Boys on the close of the Washington National Cathedral, then after retiring and moving to Boca Raton, FL, she did development work for Gulf Stream School – breaking and exceeding all prior fund raising goals at all three schools. Upon Frans’s second retirement, she moved to Dahlonega, GA to be near her life-long best friend (who, also served in the Army – WAC’s – with Fran) Mary Miller of Dahlonega. The best friends then moved in to the assisted living community of Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, GA. Fran then met & married a widower, John C. Hunt in 2005 (she had been single for 26 years).
Fran Johnson is preceded by her husband, Burr N Johnson Jr. and So, Burr N Johnson III. She is survived by husband, John C Hunt, sons: Peter & Kelly Johnson, daughters: Wendy Evans, Nancy Rucinski, Tracy Frate, Step-daughter: Kathy Martin and Step-son John C Hunt, she is also survived by 16 grandchildren.
A military honors burial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington VA at a later date to be determined.

Clyde Self: Obituary

Clyde Self age 86 of Dahlonega passed away on December 17, 2019. Mr. Self was an old fashioned country man who loved the simple life of the years past. He adored his wife and family. He was a wonderful husband, dad, papa, and brother in Christ. He was a member of Etowah Baptist Church. He loved fishing, his grandkids and adored his wife’s biscuits. Mr. Self cherished spending time with his family. The happiest moments of his life were singing and playing as the “Self Family” in churches.
Mr. Self is survived by his loving wife Bobbie, his son Clyde and daughter in law Jayne Self of Flowery Branch, daughter Mary Clarke of Dahlonega, Papa’s girls; JayeAnna Self, Elyza Self, Hannah Faith Clarke, Papa’s boys; Clyde Emory Self, and Sean Conner Clarke.
Family will receive friends on Friday December 20, 2019 from 12pm until 2pm. Funeral service will take place at 2pm in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Etowah Baptist Church Cemetery in Dahlonega. Rev. and son Clyde Self will officiate.

A celebration of life service to honor Mrs. Jimmie Chandler will be held Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell, the Rev. Marty Murphy, and the Rev. Danny Spur will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Chandler, age 86, of Dahlonega entered into her eternal rest with her Lord and Savior with her family by her side on Tuesday, November 19, 2019. She was born on April 27, 1933 to the late Reverend Joseph Edward “Ed” and Bertha Grizzle. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Julian Ray Chandler, her stepson Julian Ray Chandler, Jr., her brother Rufe Ed Grizzle, and her brother and sister-in-law JW and Eva Mae Grizzle.
Affectionately known as “Memaw”, Mrs. Chandler’s favorite activity was spending time with her family and she was loved beyond description by all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for many years and was one of the founding members of the current church. Mrs. Chandler had a heart for the church and a heart to serve the rangers at Camp Frank D. Merrill in Dahlonega, GA. She was joined in that effort by her husband, Julian Ray Chandler, who was a former WWII POW.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Lee and Sherry Benefield; daughters and sons in-law Cathy and Gerald Gilstrap, and Cindy and Toby Sherrill; grandchildren David and Shannon Benefield, Jamie and Melanie Gilstrap, Johnny and Ericka Gilstrap, Justin Gilstrap, Julianne and Will Purnell, Ashley Worley, and Abbie Sherrill; great-grandchildren Alexandria Benefield, Kerrie Gilstrap, John David Gilstrap, Hunter Gilstrap, Justin Gilstrap, Katherine Gilstrap, Sienna Purnell, Brooklyn Purnell, and Brayden Sherrill; sister-in-law Jean Grizzle; numerous nieces and nephews and her fur baby “Miss Lily”.

Terrifying towns people all around the square. In fear of their very lives, mere mortal humans willingly surrendered candy and other goodies on the demand: “Trick or Treat.”

Mr. John Sanford, age 68, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, October 24, 2019.
Mr. Sanford was born in Lumpkin County on October 31, 1950 to the late Earl and Edna Wood Sanford. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jo Sanford, brother Earl Sanford, sister Earline Hicks, brother-in-law Woodrow Hicks, and sister Thelma Edwards. Mr. Sanford was a retired truck driver. He loved to hunt and fish.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Renee and Joe Dodd, Dahlonega; step-daughters and step-sons-in-law Sherry and James Lackey, Eatonton, Teresa and Rick White, Dahlonega, and Michelle and Robbie Badgley, Dahlonega; step-daughters Janice Pate, Jenkinsburg, and Cindy Woody, Panama City Beach, FL; step-son and step-daughter-in-law Ricky and Cindy Smith, Lula; sister Alma Morgan, Dahlonega; brother Horace Sanford, Dahlonega; and numerous step-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Friday, October 25, 2019 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Freddy Bryan will officiate. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the service hour Friday at the funeral home. Mr. Sanford’s wishes were to be cremated after the service.

Mr. Harold Dorsey Martin, age 85, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, October 6, 2019.
Mr. Martin was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on June 16, 1934 to the late Lonnie and Hattie Lee Martin. In addition to his parents Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette Tolbert Martin, son William Martin, infant daughter Vickie Martin, sisters Edith Collins, Edna Higgins, and Eva Kuykendoll. Mr. Martin was a poultry and cattle farmer most of his life and eventually took up the art of a gunsmith. His favorite pastime was a good NASCAR race or a good western on TV and he loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Martin was deeply loved and cherished by his family and his grandchildren affectionately called him “Grandpa Martin”. His best friend was “Brutus” his Miniature Pinscher.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Ricky and Cindy Martin, Winder; son Michael Martin, Dahlonega; sister Estelle Patterson, Dahlonega; grandchildren Amy and Chris Garrett, Ali Martin, Nathan and Angela Martin, and April Martin; great-grandchildren Alexis Martin, Addison Blackstone, and Liam Martin; and special family member Stella Head.

Dahlonega Funeral Home announces that Eva Mae Grizzle, 87, of Dahlonega, Ga passed away September, 30th 2019. She was born on May 16th, 1932 in Dahlonega, Ga to the late Henley Caldwell and Zora Anderson Caldwell.
Mrs Grizzle was a lifelong resident of Dahlonega and was a member of Yahoola Baptist Church. As a Homemaker, she always enjoyed cooking, gardening and visiting with friends and family.
In addition to both parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband of many years, J.W. Grizzle, who passed away in 2005 and one brother Harold Eugene Caldwell.
She is survived by sisters, Betty Thompson of Dahlonega, Joyce Miller of Panama City Beach Florida; Sisters in law Jean Grizzle and Jimmie Ann Chandler; Nieces, Becky (Danny) Clark of Flowery Branch, Nancy (Ray) Carpenter of Dahlonega, Lisa Thompson of Tampa, Fla; Nephews, Dennis (Becky) Thompson of Dahlonega, Todd Thompson of Dahlonega, Gary (Bonnie) Miller of Douglasville, and Terry Miller of Nashville, TN. She is also survived by many other relatives.
The family of Ms. Grizzle will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, October 1st, 2019 from 10am to 8pm. Funeral Services for Ms. Grizzle will be held in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019 at 11am. Interment will follow at Dahlonega Memorial Park. Robert W. Somers: Obituary

Mr. Robert W. Somers, age 75, of Dahlonega passed away at home with his friends by his side on Saturday, August 10, 2019.
Robert had lived in North Carolina most of his life and had lived in Dahlonega for a number of years. He loved to restore antique cars and attend car shows. Robert left behind his faithful friend Sally, his beloved dog.
He is survived by his children Kacey Somers, Lisa Somers, and Neil Somers; his sister Edith Somers Neil; and his brother William “Billy” G. Somers, all of North Carolina.
Robert’s wishes were to be cremated and the family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
