When Mary Willene (Poss) Gipson recorded “After You”, she had no way of knowing that she would be the first to leave the loving union of marriage she shared with her husband of nearly 39 years. Their’s was truly a romance that lasted her lifetime. The song was recorded along with the single release “Plug My Heart Into the Jukebox” that climbed the Independent Charts to #1 and reached #4 on the Top 20 Independent Country Artist Radio Airplane Chart.
Mrs. Gipson, age 57, lost her battle with melanoma cancer on Wednesday, December 05, 2018 with her loving husband holding her hand and her family by her side.
She was born in Atlanta, GA on July 20, 1961 to the late James Poss and survived by her mother, Janice Farmer Poss Hulsey, who gave her great inspiration reminding her that she came from a long line of strong and courageous women. She is a member of Hope Road Church of God. She was a graduate of Lumpkin County High School Class of 1979. She attended Truett McConnell College, later transferring to North Georgia College. She completed two courses with the Children’s Institute of Children’s Literature, subsequently publishing her children’s book titled “The Tattered Feather”. Mrs. Gipson owned and operated Beacon Careers Limited for 20 years.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother Nathaniel Poss and sister Judy Poss.
She is survived by her loving husband Voughn Gipson of Dahlonega; sons Hasley Gipson of Dahlonega, and Master Sergeant Wesley (Kristen) Gipson of Ewa Beach, HI; her grandchildren Caroline and Mary Gipson of Dahlonega, and Parker Gipson of Ewa Beach, HI; her brothers Marcus Hulsey of Dahlonega, and Jim Poss of Cleveland, TN; sister Paula Modisette of Murrayville; sister-in-law Venita Thomas of Norcross; and very special friend Carol Housley of Dahlonega.
Mrs. Gipson’s life will be celebrated at 3:00 PM, Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. Mr. Bryan Shirley will officiate. Member of the Blue Mountain Chapter #333, OES will deliver final rites. Interment will follow in Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery with a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” performed on the bagpipe by Sam the Piper.

John Benjamin Abercrombie: Obituary

Mr. John Benjamin Abercrombie, age 88, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, November 19, 2018.
Mr. Abercrombie was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on July 12, 1930 to the late Charles G. and Florence Bragg Abercrombie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Martha Free Abercrombie; son Johnny Abercrombie; daughter Pamela Abercrombie; brothers Bill Abercrombie, Walter Abercrombie, C.G. Abercrombie, Jr., and Elmer Abercrombie; sisters Lou Nell McDonald, Gurlie Mae Paul, and Margaret Rogers; and son in law Anthony Waters. Mr. Abercrombie served his country honorably in the United States Army. He owned and operated Abercrombie Grocery Store and he drove a school bus for Lumpkin County schools for 14 years and 2 months. Mr. Abercrombie loved to fish and was affectionately called “Papa Ben” by his grandchildren. He was proud to have been the longest living member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church that spanned for more than 74 years.
Survivors include his daughters Reba Duff (Clayton), and Susie Waters (Daniel Thomas) both of Dahlonega; grandchildren Benji Smith, Kevin Waters, Colby Duff, Steven Duff, and Sam Duff; 16 great grandchildren including Harley Smith; four great great grandchildren; brothers Tommy Abercrombie (Darlene), Dahlonega, and Garry Abercrombie (Regina), Texas; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 21, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Les Fuller will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Goldia Loretta Reece: Obituary

Ms. Goldia Loretta Reece, age 86, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018.
Goldia was a native and life long resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on January 21, 1932 to the late Clarence Albert and Gertrude Essie Anderson Reece. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother in law J.T. Staton. Goldia retired from the Lumpkin County school system as a worker in the lunch room. She cared for each child she served and made sure they had plenty to eat. Although Goldia had no children, she loved her nephews and nieces as her own. She loved to spend time in the garden and grow food for her family and friends. Goldia was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sister Sylvia Staton, Dahlonega; nephews and nieces Randy and Nancy Staton, Murrayville; Trent and Marty Staton, Dahlonega; Keith and Tanya Staton, Orlando, FL; great nephew K.C. Staton and great niece Kate Staton.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, November 11, 2018 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The Rev. Les Fuller and the Rev. Stephen Gerrells will officiate. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Baptist Church #2 Cemetery with the Rev. Franklin Grant officiating.

Stringer and Moran discuss goals for upcoming term

LUMPKIN, GA
Rhett Stringer is re-elected for a second term in the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners District 3 seat, beating his opponent, Peri Lynn Gordon, and Jeff Moran wins the Lumpkin County BOC District 4 seat over Teresa Gay in Tuesday’s election.
Stringer told Fetch Your News that his main goal for the upcoming term is, “To see the board effectively and efficiently manage the growth coming our way while also being able to answer increased demand for county services, without raising property taxes.” He also explained that he plans to do what he can to “better the employees of the county, while not hitting the landowners anymore on property tax.”

Moran told FYN, that the most important goal he hopes to achieve during his term is, “To increase the economic development within the county.” He further explained that, “When we [LC citizens] are successful in increasing commercial and industrial growth in focused areas, we can create a sustainable, long term, revenue source, which will help in offsetting the demand for property taxes.”
Stringer is currently serving as the BOC representative on the Water Authority Committee, which he plans to continue. Moran stated he is, “Willing to serve in whatever capacity the Chairman feels I would be best suited for, based on my background, education, and interests…I would be very interested in serving one of the committees that have to do with planning, development, or building, because it directly relates to my desire to effectively manage this County’s inevitable growth and increase economic development.”

UNG rolls out inaugural HawkEm 101 Student-Athlete Mentor Program

According to a press release by University of North Georgia Athletics, UNG announced that the university has rolled out the HawkEm 101 Student-Athlete Mentor Program, which will give incoming freshman and transfer student-athletes the opportunity to engage and learn from experienced UNG student-athletes.
The athletic administration graduate assistant, Ashley Beaton, stated that, “Not only is HawkEm 101 in place to help promote education on responsible alcohol usage and overall student-athlete wellbeing, but to also encourage cross team collaboration and foster authentic relationships between the student-athletes.” She also points out that, “Shayna (Lawrence), Derrick (Pickvet) and Steven (Bower) have had such a positive impact on this program and they are a big reason why HawkEm 101 has been such a success in its first year. Also, the support from our administration has propelled us to take this initiative and run with it. I really do believe that this program will help enhance the student-athlete experience here at UNG and add to the championship culture we have, not only in athletics but in life.”
HawkEm 101 was inspiredly a group of UNG student-athletes and administrators after they attended the Division II APPLE Training Institute in September 2017 in Reston, Va. UNG baseball player, Steven Bower, explained that, “After having the opportunity to go to the Apple Conference with Sydney (Sprague), Derrick, and Shayna, I realized how much more information there was about drugs and alcohol than we knew about,”
The intent is that the program will not only help educate our new student-athletes about life as a UNG student-athlete, but also foster relationships across all teams and student-athletes.

Jan Burt, age 58, of Dahlonega, Georgia passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018. Jan was a native of Dahlonega, member of Friendship Baptist Church, loved traveling, gardening, a devoted friend, great love and passion for directing the educational growth of new students at UNG. She was the Drill Sergeant, Navigator, and Boss of her sisters. Ms. Burt is preceded in death by her mother Lillie C. (Jarrard) Burt. Jan is survived by her father JB Burt, sisters Lynn (Larry) Armstrong; Brenda Knapp; Jeannine Burt; and aunt Virginia Jarrard. Nieces and nephews; Trent Armstrong, Troy Armstrong, Shelly Riddle, Stefanie Yoon, Sebastian Knapp, Jesse Rockmore, and Jordan Rockmore; numerous other relatives also. Also surviving are lifelong devoted friends Deb McLeod, Laura Allen, Dr. Carmen Mas and many other lifelong friends. The funeral service will be 11AM, Sunday, November 4 in the Chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home with interment following at Dahlonega Memorial Park. UNG athlete selected for Preseason All-Conference team

According to the University of North Georgia Athletics Department, the Peach Belt office announced UNG senior guard, Amber Skidgel of the No. 16 women’s basketball team, to the Preseason All-Conference team Tuesday afternoon.

Skidgel is from Bethlehem, GA and was named a first team All-Conference selection last year after leading the Nighthawks to a PBC Regular Season and Tournament Championship. She led UNG with 12.6 points per outing and was seventh in the league in points and eighth in blocks. She also led the league in made-threes with 68 and was fifth in the PBC in three-point percentage, shooting just over 36 percent.
Skidgel was joined on the team by Francis Marion’s Shaunice Fulmore, Lander’s Mylea McKenith, Flagler’s Tabitha Odabe and Columbus State’s Tatiana Wayne.

UNG women’s soccer will host Division II Showcase Match

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, the women’s soccer team is preparing for the regular season finale, as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase that is scheduled to be aired nationally on Saturday, October 27. The Nighthawks go up against No. 3 Columbus State at 6:05pm in the Peach Belt Conference, held at the UNG Soccer Complex
UNG is the first school in Division II to host nationally-broadcasted matchups in five sports as part of the NCAA media agreement. North Georgia College and State University previously hosted ESPN3 in 2015 on Make-A-Wish Day. NGCSU softball took on Georgia College and the baseball team battled against Anderson.
On January 9, 2019, the men’s and women’s basketball teams will host Columbus State with ESPN3 broadcasting the games live from the UNG Convocation Center. Kickoff time will be moved back to 6:05 p.m. and will be live streamed through the NCAA Division II’s Twitter (@NCAADII) and Facebook Live pages.
The game will also be posted on the Peach Belt Conference, Columbus State and North Georgia Facebook pages. Niles Media Group will produce the broadcast, giving viewers four different angles throughout the UNG Soccer Complex.

UNG women’s soccer team defeats Young Harris 2-0

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletics, the UNG women’s soccer team earned a 2-0 win Wednesday, October 17, at the UNG Soccer Complex, defeating Young Harris. Renee VanHorn and Taylor Malasek each scored as the No. 25
UNG freshman, Abbie Crane, scored the first goal, getting behind the YHC back line and found VanHorn at the near post. VanHorn redirected the ball across the net, passing the Mountain Lion goalie putting UNG up, 1-0.
Malasek scored during the 63rd minute, after taking a pass from VanHorn and launching the ball over the top of the YHC keeper to push the match to its final score.
The Mountain Lions put pressure on the Nighthawk defense, but UNG stood strong and earned their third clean sheet of the season. UNG has now claimed its 10th straight season with double digit wins.

Willie B Cardin age 85 of Dahlonega passed away on October 14, 2018. She was of Baptist faith and loved sewing, having company over, and having a good laugh. She will be greatly missed.
Mrs Cardin is preceded by her parents Walter & Tilly (Bowls) Neely and her husband Hank Cardin.
Mrs Cardin is survived by Elizabeth Cardin, Art and Peggy Cardin, Lark Cardin, Horace Cardin, Melissa Cardin, William Cardin, Freddy Cardin (Thomas), Linda and Jason Dowdy, Amanda Mortan, Joseph Cardin, and Jeff Cardin. Grandchildren Daniel Cardin, Destany Murray, Christopher Dills, Hunter Cardin, and Micheal Cardin. Great grandchildren Adalyn & Briella Murray.

Pamela Bowlby Glaze: Obituary

Mrs. Pamela Bowlby Glaze, age 63, of Dahlonega passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018.
Mrs. Glaze was born in New Jersey on November 27, 1954. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Linda Bowlby; and her brother Mark Bowlby. Mrs. Glaze has lived in Dahlonega for a number of years. She was a loving mother and cared deeply for her animals. Her love for the mountains she lived in escalated at this time of the year because she loved fall and winter. Mrs. Glaze also loved the beach and her favorite beach to visit was Coco Beach. Mrs. Glaze had worked in early childhood care with the Lumpkin County Head Start.
Survivors include her daughters Kelly Lynn Glaze and Kim Robinson; son Chris Robinson; sister Cyndie Lee; and brother David Bowlby.

Logan Archer earns All-Tournament Honors at golf invitational

University of North Georgia senior, Logan Archer, earned the All-Tournament Honors at the Fifth Annual UNG Fall Invitational at Achasta Golf Club Tuesday, October 2. Overall, the University of North Georgia men’s golf team placed fourth at the invitational.
Archer completed all three rounds, and carded a final round 71, which resulted in an individual tie for fifth and a final of 209, seven under par. His counterpart is UNG Alumni, Joseph Jarrard, and they are tied for the second best 54-hole score in the history of the program. The Nighthawk’s overall 54-hole team score is 4-under 860, which sets the record for the best score in program history.
Young Harris won the tournament by eight strokes over Georgia College. Clayton State finished in third, while West Georgia ended fifth.
UNG women’s golf places ninth at Regional Preview

The University of North Georgia women’s golf team placed ninth at the NCAA South Super Regional Preview in Cleveland, TN. The Preview was hosted by Lee University and was held at the Cleveland Country Club.
UNG junior, Jordyn Sims, ended the final round in an individual tie for 22nd. Sims’ overall three-round total was 236, earning her the fourth best 54-hole score in program history. UNG senior, Anna Greer, is now tied for fifth all-time in the same category.
The Nighthawks collectively shot a 957, which is the third best 54-hole team score in program history.They also defeated West Florida, UNC Pembroke, and Young Harris in the event, all of which were receiving votes in the first WGCA National Poll of the year.
Number 4 ranking college, Barry University, won the tournament by 13 strokes over the host Flames. Lynn University finished third, followed by Saint Leo University and Florida Technical College. Individually, Lee’s Haverly Harrold won the tournament by two strokes, shooting a two-over 218 in the 54-hole event.

The University of North Georgia women’s golf team clinched another top 10 finish as they finished in third place out of 17 teams at the Battle at Old South. The invitational was hosted by the University of North Carolina in Pembroke, NC. This year’s program was as 36-hole event, which set the record from past invitationals.
The Nighthawks finished the tournament with a two-day total of 601, beating the previous record of +29 by four strokes. Both rounds of the tournament qualified for the top five all-time for a single round as a team.
UNG sophomore, Megan Sabol, shot a two-under-par 70 in the final round of the tournament, tying the her for third place. Her two-under is tied for the second best round in UNG history, tying with UNG sophomore, Karson Stone’s, round of 70 in the Columbus State University Lady Cougar Invitational in the spring of 2017.
Sabol told Fetch Your News that the Nighthawks have come a long way since last season, and that, “hard work and confidence shows. Not just with myself, but with my team…this year we are working hard and building confidence so we can play our best and go to Regionals in the spring.” Sabol also said that she has achieved two of her greatest career victories, so far, “I shot a 68 at the Patsy Rendelman Tournament last fall. I had never shot in the 60’s before and I think at that moment, I realized what I was capable of doing with my golf career. My second greatest personal victory would be winning the Peachbelt Conference Championship last spring. I had never thought that I would become Peachbelt Conference Player of the Year and then turn around and win the championship.”

Flagler College Junior, Pauline Tainton, won the tournament with a three-under 141. In the team standings, Lee won the tournament with a 36-hole total of 596, edging Florida Southern by a single stroke.
Other top 20 finishers for North Georgia were Jordyn Sims (t-14th) and Carson Roberts (t-17th).
In an interview with Fetch Your News, UNG sophomore, Carson Roberts, explained that her greatest accomplishment so far has been, “bouncing back from an injury during my first semester and being in the top five consistently. My greatest golf accomplishment so far is being confident in myself and my game and improving over the two years I have been on this team.” Roberts also expressed how close the women’s golf team has become, “The teammates I have had over two years have become my best friends, and we truly are a family. My coaches have helped me grow mentally and physically over the years and I am grateful for the time they have dedicated to our team.”

University of North Georgia women’s 2018-19 basketball schedule announced

After a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 a year ago, head University of North Georgia women’s basketball coach Buffie Burson has released the 2018-19 slate of games as the Nighthawks look to defend their Peach Belt titles from 2017-18.
North Georgia is coming off a 29-5 record from a year ago that included both Peach Belt regular season and tournament championships. The Nighthawks advanced through the first two rounds of the NCAA Southeast Region tournament before falling to No. 6 Carson-Newman, 75-71.
The 2018-19 season kicks off in Young Harris as the Nighthawks take part in the Peach Belt / Conference Carolinas Challenge on November 9-10. One week later, UNG hosts Georgia College, West Florida and Carson-Newman in the UNG Nighthawk Classic. North Georgia will face West Florida in the home opener on November 16 before challenging the defending Southeast Region champion Eagles to a rematch of the final on November 17.
The Nighthawks open PBC play on the road at Francis Marion on December 1 before a two-week finals break. North Georgia will then have four of their next five PBC games in the UNG Convocation Center, including a January 9 nationally televised contest against Columbus State in Dahlonega.
Spirit Night falls on February 13, 2019, as UNG hosts Young Harris to kick off a three-game homestand. Including those three, the Nighthawks will play five of their final seven at home to finish off the regular season.
