UNG softball sweeps Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – The No. 13 University of North Georgia softball team finished off their fourth straight Peach Belt Conference sweep, taking down Georgia Southwestern, 6-0, Sunday afternoon.
Madison Simmons got things started in the first, blasting a two run homer to take the early lead. North Georgia kept it going in the third inning as the Nighthawks plated two more off a Haley Cummings RBI double and a Hannah Forehand RBI single to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Jolie Lester pushed a fifth run across in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly before Cummings singled in the sixth to round out the scoring.
NOTES
– Kristen Davis (8-2) finished out the series with a five hit shutout, striking out five.
– The 13-game winning streak in conference play is the longest since UNG won its final 13 games in league play in 2017.
Georgia Southwestern rolls past UNG, 6-2

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia baseball team fell Sunday to Georgia Southwestern, 6-2, in Peach Belt Conference action.
GSW got on the scoreboard first, hitting a two run homer and scoring on a wild pitch in the second before getting a RBI double in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. North Georgia loaded up the bases after the seventh inning stretch and pushed across a run on a RBI groundout to cut into the lead, 4-1.
After the Hurricanes got a sacrifice fly in the eighth, North Georgia again found the scoreboard as Jorge Arispuro hit his first homer of the season to make the score 5-2. GSW scored again in the ninth on a wild pitch to get to the final score.
NOTES
– North Georgia left 14 runners on base, nine of which were in scoring position.
– Crews Taylor, Garrett Hollenbeck, Arispuro and Will Hardigree each had multi-hit games. Hollenbeck is now on an eight-game hitting streak.
NEXT UP
North Georgia will host Montevallo on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the first of a two-game midweek series.
Nighthawks split Saturday twin bill

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia split a Saturday doubleheader with Georgia Southwestern, winning the nightcap in extra innings.
GAME 1 – GSW 8, UNG 1
The Hurricanes struck first in the third after a leadoff triple led to the game’s first run, but North Georgia answered with a Riley Frost RBI single that tied the game up through three complete, 1-1.
GSW scored the game’s final seven runs, scoring a pair in the sixth, a single run in the seventh, and four in the ninth to take the series opening win.
GAME 2 – UNG 1, GSW 0 (10 inn.)
Both North Georgia and Georgia Southwestern had opportunities to score throughout the first nine innings of the contest, but UNG’s Pierce Williams and GSW’s Nick McCollum threw gems, both going nine innings of shutout baseball and working out of jams.
After Jake Arnold sat down the ‘Canes in the top of the 10th, the Nighthawks pushed across the game’s only run in the bottom of the frame on a Tim Conway walkoff single.
NOTES
– Kaleb Freeman went 3-for-6 on the day, while Jorge Arispuro went 3-for-8.
– The extra innings win broke a streak of eight straight extra innings losses for North Georgia.

The two teams will meet in a rubber game tomorrow at 1 p.m.

UNG women close out season with 2-0 win over Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team used stifling defense and a pair of goals to earn a 2-0 win in the regular season finale Saturday at Georgia Southwestern.
North Georgia got on the board in the 40th minute when Skylar Abbott scored her first goal of her collegiate career. After leading by a goal at the break, UNG doubled its lead as Taylor Malasek found Katey Derkay for the final goal of the match in the 52nd minute.
NOTES
– UNG shut down GSW defensively, giving up just four shots, all of which were taken in the first half.
– With the win, North Georgia moves into a tie for fourth with Clayton State in the league standings. However, since the Lakers beat UNG in the regular season, Clayton State earns the fourth seed and will play host to the Nighthawks in the quarterfinal round.
NEXT UP
North Georgia travels to Clayton State in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Tournament Saturday. Game time will be announced early next week.
Hurricanes outlast UNG in double overtime thriller

AMERICUS, Ga. – Despite a last second goal from Michael Walsh to force extra time, the University of North Georgia men’s soccer team fell in double overtime to Georgia Southwestern, 3-2, Saturday night.
North Georgia got on the board first in the seventh minute when Donovan Odier scored his ninth goal of the season on a pass from Gabriel Campora to take an early 1-0 lead. The Hurricanes answered in the 35th minute on the first of two Jack Malleret goals. Malleret scored his second just before halftime to give GSW a 2-1 lead into the break.
Neither team could break through as it looked like GSW would hold on for the win in regulation, but Walsh fired a shot toward goal from nearly 50 yards out with five seconds left that found the back of the net as time expired to force the overtime periods. Chris Salamatou scored the golden goal in the 105th minute on a rebound to give the home team the win.
NOTES
– The Nighthawks scored on both of their shots on target. UNG took seven shots in total.
– North Georgia is winless in its last eight matches that have gone to double overtime, going 0-3-5 in that stretch. The last match that UNG won after 100 minutes elapsed was at UNC Pembroke on October 22, 2016.

North Georgia will jump out of league play to take on Anderson Wednesday night at home. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
