Men’s Soccer Shoots Past Saints, 5-3

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia men’s soccer team scored three goals in less than 10 minutes to open the second half on its way to a 5-3 win over Flagler Saturday afternoon at the UNG Soccer Complex. The Nighthawks improve to 2-1 in Peach Belt Conference action with the win.

“The first half, we fell asleep due to Flagler slowing the tempo on us,” said head men’s soccer coach Pat Parris. “After we made adjustments at halftime, we were able to speed it up to where we like to play and it showed on the scoreboard.”

Gabriel Garcia opened up the scoring for the Nighthawks in the 11th minute of play, taking an Alex Grant pass and firing home the goal. Flagler answered late in the first half on a Rostand Ndong goal inside the penalty box.

North Georgia came out fast in the second half, starting with a Grant goal in the 50th minute and an Evan Davis goal in the 51st minute. Matheus Abreu joined the scoring column in the 58th minute of action from just outside the box.

After a Ndong goal in the 62nd minute, Carl Ludwig Eriksson put the game away with a penalty kick in the 68th minute. The Saints added a third goal four minutes later, but UNG’s defense stood tall late in the match.

NOTES
– The five goals scored was the most since October 22, 2016, when UNG scored five in a 5-4 win over UNC Pembroke.

– North Georgia earned its first win over Flagler since October 20, 2012, where UNG won on the road, 3-1.

– There were 34 total fouls called in the match, including two bookings.

NEXT UP
The Nighthawks will look to make it four of the last five wins as they host Lander on Wednesday night. The game will serve as Nighthawks United Night as well as the Tom C. Montgomery Scholarship presentation. Kick off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

INDIANAPOLIS – Three University of North Georgia student-athletes have been granted a Degree Completion by the NCAA as announced on Friday. Baseball player Josh Bryan, women’s soccer player Megan Gil and women’s basketball player Kelsey Hutchins were each awarded the $6,000 grant.

The trio joins former men’s basketball player Tanner Plemmons to become the fourth North Georgia student-athlete to earn the honor in the last two years.

The NCAA established the Division II Degree Completion Award Program in 2001 to provide deserving student-athletes financial assistance for them to complete their first baccalaureate degree. Candidates will be students who have exhausted their athletics eligibility and have received athletics financial aid.

The selection process for the national award emphasizes the academic performance of the student-athlete. Other factors considered are financial circumstances, athletic achievement and involvement in campus and community activities.

To date, nearly $4 million has been given to approximately 1,000 deserving student-athletes. Of those student-athletes who have received the award since its inception, 94 percent have earned their undergraduate degree using this program.

UNG Student Reports Being Raped While Jogging Wednesday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Lumpkin County authorities are investigating the alleged rape of a female student at the University of North Georgia who was jogging near the Dahlonega reservoir Wednesday evening when the attack took place.

Lt. Chris Pfrogner of the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office said the attack happened sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The victim described her assailant as a white male, with brown hair and a beard. He was wearing a dark blue or black shirt and is believed to be in his late 20s to early 40s.

“I can tell you that we have been working on this investigation non-stop since it was reported,” Pfrogner said. “Currently we have not had anything suspicious reported to us which would be related to this incident. We are not telling anyone to stay off the reservoir trails. Right now this is an isolated incident. We recommend people (especially women) walk in groups, and if they see anything suspicious to contact us immediately.”

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office at 706-864-3633 and ask to speak with an investigator.

McSwain Blast Sends No. 3 Nighthawks To Super Regional; UNG Survives Four Elimination Games

DAHLONEGA – Hannah McSwain‘s two-run blast over the left field fence in the eighth inning was the difference as the No. 3 University of North Georgia softball team battled out of the losers’ bracket to win the 2017 NCAA Division II Softball Southeast Regional 1 on Saturday afternoon at UNG’s Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium.
North Georgia won the first game of the day 8-1 over fourth-seeded Limestone and, following a lengthy rain delay between games, held off a late charge to edge the Saints, 5-3, in eight innings.

UNG advances to the Super Regional on May 18-19 to be held at “The Hill” in Dahlonega against the winner of tomorrow’s (Sunday) match up between third-seeded Armstrong State and seventh-seeded Pfeiffer. The Southeast Regional 2 was postponed today due to rain in the Savannah area.

Game #1: North Georgia 8, Limestone 1

UNG jumped out early with a run in the top of the first courtesy of a RBI-single by Jessica Finch and Shelby Hammontree‘s tenth homerun of the season in the top of the fourth upped the Nighthawk lead to 2-0.

A four-run sixth inning was fueled by four doubles from Lexi Duncah, Hannah McSwain, Stephanie Hartness and Alishia Frierson and capped with Finch’s second RBI-single of the game.

A solo shot by Limestone in the bottom of the frame allowed the Saints to avoid the shutout, before a two-run pinch hit homerun by North Georgia’s Kali Turner in the seventh rounded out the scoring.

Kylee Smith (30-5) earned her 30th win of the season in the circle with six strikeouts in six innings of work as the freshman scattered five hits.

Finch, Duncan and McSwain each posted two hits to pace the UNG offense.

Game #2: North Georgia 5, Limestone 3 (8)

UNG jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second game when back-to-back RBI-doubles by Sydney Sprague and Hartness plated three Nighthawks in the top of the second.

Limestone showed some fight in the bottom of the fourth as the Saints tied up the score at 3-3 with three consecutive RBI-singles.

McSwain’s game-winner in the eighth plated Duncan who singled through the left side.

In the bottom half, Smith would need just six pitches to sit down the side and send the Nighthawks to the next round. She fanned five Saints while giving up just four hits and a single earned run. Her five strikeouts came in consecutive at-bats in the second and third innings.

Hartness led the offense with a 3-for-4 game from the plate, while Duncan pitched in with her ninth multiple-hit game of the season.

Notes

– Stephanie Hartness was 12-of-16 from the plate during the five games of the Regional for an impressive .750 batting average.

– McSwain extended her hitting streak to a season-best eight games.

– North Georgia has won all eight regionals hosted in Dahlonega, with this year’s marking the first time that the Nighthawks had to fight back out of the losers’ bracket. Prior to Thursday’s 2-1 loss to North Greenville, UNG had won 21 consecutive Regional games at home.

– UNG is now 25-1 in regional play in Dahlonega.

– The Super Regional appearance will be the eighth in program history.

No. 2 UNG Baseball Rallies For 10-6 Win Over GSW In PBC Tournament Opener

FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman catcher Andres Perez dropped a two-out, two-run double into shallow center field to snap a 5-5 deadlock and spark second-ranked and top-seeded University of North Georgia to a 10-6 come-from-behind win over eighth-seeded Georgia Southwestern State University, Wednesday evening in the third game of the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament.

North Georgia (41-8) advances to play in a winners’ bracket game on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. against either UNC Pembroke or Columbus State.

Perez finished with two hits as did UNG designated hitter Bill Leroy, while first baseman Trevor Sams went 3-for-3 with a double and a three-run homer.

Southpaw Dallas Deavers (2-0), the second of fourth UNG hurlers, earned the win with two and a third scoreless frames.

Georgia Southwestern junior starter Kyle Spinks (2-4) was tagged with the loss as he allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings. He fanned seven and walked six.

North Georgia took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second when Sams led off with a single and later scored from third when Spinks was called for a two-out balk.

The Hurricanes took a 5-1 advantage in the top fourth with a handful of runs. The outburst featured a sacrifice fly, a two-run homer, and two runs scoring on an infield fielding error.

A two-out, two-run single to right by UNG’s Devin Gearhart quickly trimmed the margin to 5-3 in the last of the fourth. A run-scoring single by Michael Bell and a sacrifice fly to the left field wall by Steven Tomlinson knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth, before Perez delivered his go-ahead hit to put the Nighthawks up 7-5.

A sacrifice fly in the seventh brought the Hurricanes to within 7-6, but Sam’s three-run homer to left center with two outs in the eighth plated three insurance runs for North Georgia. The Hurricanes put a pair of runners on base in the top of the ninth, but were unable to mount a rally.

No. 5 Baseball Cruises Past West Florida, 7-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The fifth-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team got off to a quick start and finished strong Tuesday evening at Jim Spooner Field, handing West Florida a 7-1 loss in the first game of the annual two-game set. The Nighthawks move to 26-7 on the year with the victory.

Michael Bell drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to right in the top of the first that plated Connor Hoover from third to give UNG an early 1-0 lead. Hoover would drive in a run of his own in the next inning with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Steven Tomlinson double the Nighthawk lead.

Conner Corbitt picked up a two-out RBI single up the middle in the third to extend the lead to 3-0. The Argonauts finally kept North Georgia off the board in the top of the fourth and got on the board themselves in the home half of the inning two-out RBI single through the left side, to pull within two.

UNG would answer immediately in the next frame though, scoring two runs, including a sac fly to right by Tomlinson that put North Georgia up 5-1.

The Nighthawks added some insurance in the seventh with an Andres Perez RBI double down the right field line and an RBI single to right by Devin Gearhart extending the lead to 7-1, which proved final.

NOTES
– Josh Bryan (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Nighthawks pitching 5.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing just one baserunner on a single hit with four strikeouts.

– Blake Gaubert got his first start of the season and though his pitch count ran high early, he allowed just one run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in his 3.2 innings pitched.

– Bill Leroy continued his hot hand at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored.

– Six different Nighthawks drove in runs on the night.

– This marks the first win for North Georgia in Pensacola since 2010. UNG takes the slightest of leads in the all-time series with the win at 12-11.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CDT.

UNG women’s soccer earns Academic Award

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia women’s soccer team has earned the United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 season.

The Nighthawks sported a 3.54 grade point average last season, putting them amongst the 644 women’s teams to be honored by the association. UNG was one of eight Peach Belt teams to earn the award, including Columbus State, Francis Marion, Georgia College, Lander, UNC Pembroke, USC Aiken and Young Harris.

College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster for the 2018-19 academic year.

UNG men’s soccer team tabbed third in PBC poll

AUGUSTA, Ga. – – The University of North Georgia men’s soccer team was picked to finish in third place for the third consecutive year as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

North Georgia finished in the top three in the PBC standings for the third year in a row in 2018, finishing with a 7-6-2 record and 4-3 mark in conference play. The Nighthawks return six seniors for 2019, including All-Conference forward Eren Ozer. Also returning are seniors Evan Davis and Jordan Day, both of whom were named to the Preseason All-Conference team.

Young Harris was picked as the unanimous favorite to win the league, taking all seven first place votes available to them. Lander was picked second, picking up the other first place vote. Francis Marion comes in one spot behind UNG in the poll, while Clayton State rounds out the top five.

The Nighthawks open up the 2019 season at home on September 6 when they take on Lincoln Memorial. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. from the UNG Soccer Complex.

Bower strikes out career high 12 in Nighthawks win

DAHLONEGA – Steven Bower struck out 12 Bearcats as the No. 17 University of North Georgia baseball team shut out Lander Friday night, 7-0, at Bob Stein Stadium.

UNG struck first on a Brady Eeles RBI single in the bottom half of the first to take a 1-0 lead. The Nighthawks scored twice in the third, the first coming off a Nik Levensteins RBI single before a squeeze bunt by Conner Corbitt brought home the third run of the game.

North Georgia scored the final four runs in the sixth inning, starting on a Crews Taylor RBI double down the line in right field. After a Bearcat wild pitch scored Jake Arnold, Taylor came home on a Bearcat error to make the score 6-0. Bill LeRoy brought home the game’s final run on a sacrifice fly.

NOTES
This is the third time Bower (8-2) has had double digit strikeouts in a single game. He struck out 10 in a game twice in his career, including once this year.

Taylor led the Nighthawks at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and a RBI.

UNG baseball falls to No. 12 USC Aiken in series inale, 6-1

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — A four-run first inning was all No. 12 USC Aiken needed as they won the series finale against the University of North Georgia baseball team, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.
Conner Durden got things started for the Pacers with a two-run blast in the top of the first, followed closely by a Chandler Rogers RBI double that plated two more runs, putting USCA up, 4-0.
North Georgia got one run back in the eighth inning on a Chase Sudduth RBI single with the bases loaded, but that was all the Nighthawks could get. The Pacers added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
NOTES
– Chase Sudduth finished his week with a 1-for-4 day. He finished the week at 11-for-16 with 10 runs scored.
– The Nighthawks won the series over USC Aiken. It’s the first series win over the Pacers since 2015.

UNG men’s basketball team falls short to Lander in overtime

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, Shawn Hopkins, guard for the UNG men’s basketball team, scored 29 points for the Nighthawks during their game against Lander Wednesday night, held at Finis Horne Arena.

The Nighthawks fell in overtime, 107-104, after holding a seven-point advantage at halftime.  UNG battled back, scoring the next eight points to retake the lead before LU held on to a two-point lead with just 15 seconds left in regulation. UNG took an early lead in the extra frame, but Lander stretched a lead out to six points, too far away for a late comeback attempt from UNG.

Morrison, Perez Earn D2CCA Second Team All-Region Honors

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – After being named to the NCBWA All-Region Second Team earlier this week, University of North Georgia baseball players Parker Morrison and Andres Perez earned D2CCA All-Region honors as announced by the association Friday evening.

A redshirt freshman from Cumming, Georgia, Morrison is the second team All-Region reliever after recording 10 saves and a 4-2 record and posting a 2.01 ERA in 53.2 innings of work on the mound for UNG. He had 62 strikeouts against just 27 walks, with opponents hitting just .164 against him this season.

A sophomore from Duluth, Georgia, Perez earned second team All-Region honors as a catcher, hitting .330 with a Peach Belt best 23 homers to go along with 68 RBI and a .699 slugging percentage. He also caught 20 of the 28 base runners that tried to steal a base against him this season.

Both Nighthawks are on the D2CCA All-Region list for the first time in their careers.

UNG women’s soccer team to be featured in NCAA showcase

According to a press release from the University of North Georgia Athletic Department, the UNG women’s soccer program is expected to be nationally recognized as part of the NCAA Division II Showcase. UNG will go up against nationally-ranked Columbus State on October 27. Fans and supporters can watch a national broadcast of the game on NCAA Division II’s Twitter (@NCAADII) and Facebook Live. Kick off time is 6:05pm.

This achievement makes UNG the first school in Division II to host nationally-televised matchups in five sports; UNG previously hosted ESPN3 in 2015 on Make-A-Wish Day with the softball team taking on Georgia College and the baseball team playing host to Anderson.

The Peach Belt Conference, UNG, and Columbus State will also share the game on their Facebook pages. Niles Media Group will produce the broadcast, giving viewers four different angles throughout the UNG Soccer Complex.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams will also host Columbus State on January 9, 2019, with ESPN3 broadcasting the games live from the UNG Convocation Center.

 

UPDATED: Truitt, Kirkland Claim PBC Championships on Final Day of Conference Meet

PEMBROKE, N.C. – Brittany Truitt and Abigail Kirkland earned Peach Belt Conference Championships Saturday as the University of North Georgia track & field team finished in fourth place at the conference meet.

Truitt ran a 17:30.92 to win the 5000 meter race in come-from-behind fashion. After running in second for the majority of the race, the senior turned on the speed over the final 400 meters to pass Embry-Riddle’s Sarah Edens and win the race by over 10 seconds. This is Truitt’s second conference championship in track and field in her career, winning the 800 meter race last year.

Kirkland ran away from the field in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing atop the conference with a time of 1:01.65, leading from start-to-finish in the race. The freshman also ran the final leg of the 4×400 meter relay race where the Nighthawks finished runners-up. In addition, Kirkland was named Freshman Track Athlete of the Year and was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

In total, the Nighthawks garnered 98 points, finishing 28 points clear of Augusta for fourth place. Embry-Riddle ran away with the team title with 219 points, followed by Nova Southeastern’s 162 points and UNC Pembroke’s 149.

North Georgia also had conference medalists in the 400 meter (Aleah Johnson, 2nd place), the 800 meter (Tori Rives, 2nd; Imani Arnold, 3rd) and the 1500 meter (Truitt, 2nd).

Baseball Snaps WSSU’s Winning Streak With 4-2 Win

DAHLONEGA – Despite a ninth-inning threat from the Rams of Winston-Salem State, the University of North Georgia baseball team was able to hang on to a two-run lead as Parker Morrison struck out the side with runners on the corners to win game one of the series, 4-2, Friday night at Bob Stein Stadium.

Winston-Salem jumped on the Nighthawks in the third to get a lead. A lead off single from Wellington Guzman followed by a sacrifice bunt from Nick Williams, then a homer over left center from Randy Norris put the Rams up 2-0.

Behind in the score, North Georgia fought back in the bottom of the frame. William Mapes led off with a bunt to the first baseman, diving safely into the bag to board a runner for UNG. Chase Sudduth drew a walk to put runners on first and second for Andres Perez, whose RBI single to left scored Mapes and cut the lead in half, 2-1. A wild pitch would allow Sudduth to score and tie it up.

A RBI double from Nick Clarno to score Jake Arnold, who reached on a double to left, clinched the lead for the Nighthawks in the fourth frame. Then in the sixth, Arnold’s hot bat sent a shot over left to add an insurance run and extend the lead, 4-2.

The Rams were not through as they fought back in the ninth. A leadoff single from Emilio Abreu brought the tying run to plate for WSSU, Cole Parks. Parks blasted a ground single through the right side to board the go-ahead for the Rams, as Abreu advanced to third on the play. But despite the effort, Morrison sat the following three batters down in order to close it out for the Nighthawks.

NOTES
– Arnold went 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, and one run scored. Clarno went 1-for-4 with a double and a RBI as well.

– With this win, Cade Heil improved to 6-5 on the season, WSSU’s Seth Reeves (3-3) drew the loss, and Morrison earned his 10th save of the year. Heil also had three pickoffs in the contest.

– UNG disrupted WSSU’s eight-game winning streak, and improved their streak to five.

North Georgia will be back at The Steiner tomorrow for game two of the three-game series against Winston-Salem State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
