UNG blasts four homers in win over Anderson

DAHLONEGA – The University of North Georgia baseball team used a quartet of homers to blow past Anderson Tuesday night, 13-5.

The Nighthawks got the scoring started in the second when Crews Taylor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to walk in the first run of the game. Four pitches later, Tim Conway hit a grand slam that just cleared the wall in left center to push the lead out to 5-0. After a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch in the bottom of the third pushed the lead to 7-0, Taylor got in on the homer party with a two run moonshot to right that landed on the softball field and gave UNG a 9-0 lead.

Anderson got their first run in the top of the sixth on a RBI single, but the Nighthawks got it right back in the bottom of the inning with a Jake Arnold solo bomb that made the score 10-1. The Trojans scored a run in the seventh on a RBI double and three in the eighth off two sacrifice flies and a RBI single to cut the lead down to 10-5 before Jorge Arispuro finished off the day with a three run shot to left.

NOTES

– Eddie Galatas (3-0) earned the win, scattering three hits and a pair of walks.

– UNG is now 9-0 this season in games where they score in double figures. The Nighthawks are 14-3 in games where they hold their opponents to five runs or less.

– Riley Frost went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead all hitters.

North Georgia will start a four-game road trip tomorrow afternoon at West Georgia. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Indians defeat Dawson Co. 13-8

The Lumpkin Co. Indians defeated the Dawson Co. Tigers 13-8 on Monday night in Dawsonville. The Indians used a big first inning to take a commanding lead. Harper Davenport’s 2-run double capped off a six run first inning for Lumpkin Co.

Riley Lee was the starting pitcher for Lumpkin Co.

Kinkade Weaver hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to open up the scoring for Dawson Co.

The Indians struck out the final two batters in the bottom of the 7th inning to end the game at 13-8.

The series will continue this Wednesday, April 21st. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.

Peppers’ Complete Game Lifts Nighthawks to Win On Opening Day of NCAA Regional

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The No. 6 University of North Georgia used a strong pitching outing from Dylan Peppers and a pair of home runs by Conner Corbitt and Bill Leroy to down seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial, 4-1, in opening round action of the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Thursday at Mount Olive’s Scarborough Field.

Peppers kept the Railsplitters at bay all afternoon on his way to the complete game win. The right-hander struck out eight Railsplitters over his nine innings and did not allow a hit after a fifth-inning single. The only base runner he allowed in his final 4.2 innings was a walk in the eighth.

Trevor Sams joined Corbitt and Leroy with multiple hit games to lead the Nighthawk offense.

Lincoln Memorial took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a RBI-ground out.

North Georgia tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on Sams’ two-out single to left. Corbitt homered to lead off the fourth to put the Nighthawks up for good.

Leroy homered to lead off the sixth inning to put the Nighthawks up 3-1.

Corbitt singled in another insurance run in the eighth following Sams’ leadoff double.

NOTES

– Peppers only needed four pitches to record the final three outs to move to 8-3 on the season.

– North Georgia doubled up the Railsplitters in hits, 10-5.

– Despite being a conference foe, tomorrow’s meeting with No. 17 USC Aiken will be the first of the season as the two teams did not meet in the regular season or conference tournament.

No. 2 Nighthawks Knocked Out of PBC Tournament After Splitting Two Games

FLORENCE, S.C. – The second-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team battled to the end, but was eliminated from the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Friday evening with a 7-6 loss to Georgia College at Francis Marion’s Sparrow Stadium. The Nighthawks advanced to the semifinal round earlier in the day with a 4-1 win over Georgia Southwestern.

Daniel McCrary pitched a complete-game two-hitter as the Nighthawks beat Georgia Southwestern for the second time in as many days.

McCrary finished the game in 130 pitches, collecting five strikeouts and walking two. The junior lefty improved to 10-1 with the win.

He becomes the first North Georgia NCAA-era pitcher to collect double figure wins.

North Georgia got on the board early with two runs in the first. With the bases loaded, Bill Leroy drew a walk to bring in the first run. Conner Corbitt then lifted a pop up that was ruled an infield fly, bringing home Michael Gouge on the sacrifice fly.

North Georgia added two runs in the eighth as Corbitt led off with a double and later scored on Andres Perez‘s sacrifice fly. Steven Tomlinson later scored on a safety squeeze bunt from Devin Gearhart.

Kal Dempsey was the only Nighthawk to collect more than one hit as he went 2-for-3. Gouge and Corbitt had the only extra-base hits in the game.

Game #2: Georgia College 7, North Georgia 6

North Georgia jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI-singles by Trevor Sams and Bill Leroy.

After GC evened up the score in the third, the Nighthawk offense struck again in the bottom half with a RBI-double from Michael Gouge and a RBI-single from Corbitt.

North Georgia would extend its lead to 5-2 after plating a single run in the fifth, but the Bobcats used five runs on five hits in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

Both teams would register 10 hits on the night with Devin Gearhart, Sams, Hoover and Leroy each recording two hits apiece.

Josh Bryan (4-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season after surrendering two earned runs in the sixth inning.

Notes

– McCrary retired 15 batters in a row at one point as he allowed only four Hurricanes to reach base.

Tonight’s second game was North Georgia’s third in the past 24 hours after ending play on Friday morning at 1:45 a.m., the Nighthawks returned on short rest for today’s 1:30 and 8:30 first pitches.

Michael Gouge extended his reached base streak to a team-best 34 games.

– North Georgia is ranked No. 2 behind Mount Olive in the final published Southeast Region poll. A likely NCAA regional berth would be the program’s second in the last three years and third in the NCAA era.

No. 5 Baseball Cruises Past West Florida, 7-1

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The fifth-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team got off to a quick start and finished strong Tuesday evening at Jim Spooner Field, handing West Florida a 7-1 loss in the first game of the annual two-game set. The Nighthawks move to 26-7 on the year with the victory.

Michael Bell drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single to right in the top of the first that plated Connor Hoover from third to give UNG an early 1-0 lead. Hoover would drive in a run of his own in the next inning with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Steven Tomlinson double the Nighthawk lead.

Conner Corbitt picked up a two-out RBI single up the middle in the third to extend the lead to 3-0. The Argonauts finally kept North Georgia off the board in the top of the fourth and got on the board themselves in the home half of the inning two-out RBI single through the left side, to pull within two.

UNG would answer immediately in the next frame though, scoring two runs, including a sac fly to right by Tomlinson that put North Georgia up 5-1.

The Nighthawks added some insurance in the seventh with an Andres Perez RBI double down the right field line and an RBI single to right by Devin Gearhart extending the lead to 7-1, which proved final.

NOTES
Josh Bryan (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Nighthawks pitching 5.1 innings of shutout ball, allowing just one baserunner on a single hit with four strikeouts.

Blake Gaubert got his first start of the season and though his pitch count ran high early, he allowed just one run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts in his 3.2 innings pitched.

Bill Leroy continued his hot hand at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored.

– Six different Nighthawks drove in runs on the night.

– This marks the first win for North Georgia in Pensacola since 2010. UNG takes the slightest of leads in the all-time series with the win at 12-11.

TEXAS BOUND!! Eighth Inning Homer by Perez Sends Nighthawks To First-Ever NCAA Baseball Championship

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Freshman Andres Perez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning of a tie game to lift the No. 6 University of North Georgia baseball team to the NCAA Southeast Region Championship over Catawba, 5-4, on Monday at Mount Olive’s Scarborough Field. With the win, the Nighthawks (46-10) advance to the school’s first NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Grand Prairie, Texas, starting on May 27.

North Georgia led by 3-1 and 4-2 only to see the Indians come back and tie the game 4-4 in the top of the eighth. With two outs in the bottom of the innings, Perez took the 2-2 pitch over the left field wall, his seventh homer of the season.

Catawba got a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, but UNG pitcher Jack Fleming (1-0) induced a double play and a fly out to end the game.

North Georgia scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to take a 3-0 lead.

In the third, Perez got the scoring started with an RBI single up the middle that brought in Steven Tomlinson. Michael Gouge then delivered another RBI single to left in the fifth to bring home Devin Gearhart, who led off the inning with a walk.

Conner Corbitt then scored in the sixth on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

UNG starter Dylan Peppers kept Catawba off the board in his six innings of work. He scattered four hits and allowed only one walk with seven strikeouts.

UNG had to go to the bullpen to start the seventh where Catawba scored two runs, aided by a UNG fielding error.

The Indians (40-17) tied the game in the top of the eighth with three hits, including a double, and a North Georgia throwing error.

Perez and Bill Leroy were the only two Nighthawks with more than one hit in the game. Leroy went 2-for-4 with a double in the bottom of the seventh that scored UNG’s fourth run.

North Georgia makes their first Division II Championship appearance and the Nighthawks will face No. 14 West Chester (40-11), winners of the Atlantic Region with a 12-7 win over Winston-Salem State.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 CST on Saturday, May 27 at The Ballpark at Grand Prairie.

NOTES

– Nine of Catawba’s 10 hits were singles.

– Peppers was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after posting a pair of strong pitching performances. Perez and Connor Hoover were also named to the All-Tournament team.

No. 3 Nighthawks Race Past No. 1 Mount Olive, 13-6, In NCAA Southeast Regional

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The No. 6 University of North Georgia baseball team scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 13-6 win over host and top-seeded Mount Olive, in third round action of the 2017 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Saturday evening at Mount Olive’s Scarborough Field.

North Georgia (45-10) advances to Monday’s championship game at 12:00.

The Nighthawks belted 18 hits on the night as first inning homeruns by Connor Hoover and Andres Perez kickstarted the hit parade.

All nine players in the lineup recorded a hit with Devin Gearhart leading the way with a 4-for-5 game. Perez, Conner Corbitt and Steven Tomlinson each added three-hit performances from the plate.

Logan Burt earned his third victory of the season with a solid five and one third innings of relief work in which the left hander allowed just a single run while striking out four Trojans.

Mount Olive’s Austin Hutchison (12-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after allowing the first seven runs of the game on six hits in just two thirds of an inning of work.

NOTES

– Mount Olive (48-9) had won 18 of their last 19 contests and was 26-1 at Scarborough Field prior to tonight’s game.

– The win marks the third time this season that the Nighthawks have knocked off the top-ranked team in the country.

– The game was delayed due to lightning in the bottom of the sixth with Trojans on first and second with no outs. Following a 30 minute delay, Burt returned to the hill to sit down the next three batters to avoid any damage.

– Corbitt’s three knocks marked the tenth time this season that the sophomore has recorded three hits in a game.

– Hoover’s first inning homerun was his team-best 18th of the season.

– The second-seeded Nighthawks advance to the championship game on Monday at 12:00 p.m. The opponent will either be Mount Olive, fourth-seeded Catawba or seventh-seeded Lincoln Memorial and that team will have to defeat UNG twice.

Nighthawks staff assistant coach

DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia head softball coach Mike Davenport has announced that Sage Woodham has joined the Nighthawk staff as an assistant coach following a one-year stint as the pitching coach at Georgia Tech.

Prior to 2017, Woodham spent seasons at Southern Arkansas, where she coached two All-Great American Conference pitchers, one all-region pitcher, and the GAC Newcomer of the Year and Hero Sports Division II Newcomer of the Year in LHP Kimmy Beasley. In 2016, SAU was named the NFCA’s Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

In 2016, the Lady Muleriders reached their first ever national ranking and reached the NCAA Division II World Series semi-finals, finishing No. 4 in the country.

Prior to joining the Lady Muleriders, Woodham spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the North Alabama. In her time at UNA, Woodham coached three All-Gulf South Conference pitchers including the 2014 GSC Pitcher of the Year and Daktronics All-Region second-teamer, Hillary Carpenter. She helped the Lions’ pitching staff post team ERAs of 2.49 in 2014 (1st in GSC) and 3.06 in 2013 (4th in GSC).

Before joining the staff at North Alabama, Woodham served as graduate assistant coach for two seasons at Augusta State. While at ASU, Woodham worked with the pitchers and helped the team notch a 2.44 earned run average during the 2012 season. In 2012, Woodham received a master’s degree in Kinesiology from ASU.

Woodham was a standout pitcher for the University of Alabama-Huntsville softball team from 2006-09. While playing at UAH, Woodham was a two-time All-American, and during her career, she won 91 games and posted a 1.22 ERA with 607 strikeouts. Woodham also helped lead the Chargers to a national runner-up finish in the 2009 NCAA Division II World Series.

She was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Decade in the 2000’s.

West Chester Holds Off Nighthawks, 9-4, On Opening Day Of NCAA Championship

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – The No. 3 University of North Georgia baseball team came up on the short end of a 9-4 decision with No. 21 on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the 2017 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship at The Ball Park at Grand Prairie.

WCU (41-11) used four runs in the third and five in the seventh to snap the Nighthawks’ four-game NCAA tournament winning streak.

UNG (46-11) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the second inning courtesy of a RBI triple by Steven Tomlinson that plated Conner Corbitt who led off the inning with a single. A ground out by Andres Perez two batters later plated Tomlinson to push before Connor Hoover capped the inning with a RBI single of his own.

West Chester’s Jared Melone belted a grand slam in the next at-bat for WCU to give Golden Rams the lead for good. The two-out rally was aided by a UNG throwing error and a hit batter.

The Golden Rams later plated five runs in the seventh to break open the one-run game. West Chester sent all nine batters to the plate in the frame and had a string of four consecutive hits, including three RBI-singles while five straight reached safely.

North Georgia’s final at-bat made things interesting as the Nighthawks loaded the bases with one out after a free pass to Hoover scored Tomlinson to cut the WCU lead to 9-4, but the Golden Rams shut the door with an inning-ending double play.

Daniel McCrary (10-2) was tagged with just his second loss of the season after allowing four runs, all unearned, on five hits while walking two and striking out three.

Offensively, Hoover and Tomlinson combined for five of UNG’s seven hits on the day. Hoover was 3-of-4 with a pair of RBI, while Tomlinson was 2-of-4 with two runs scored.

The Nighthawks will now face the loser of Lindenwood and No. 2 Delta State on Monday, May 29 at 4:00 EST in an elimination game.

Cantrell Named PBC Coach of the Year; Nine Nighthawks Earn All-Conference Honors

FLORENCE, S.C. – The second-ranked University of North Georgia baseball team led the way in the Peach Belt Conference annual awards announced tonight at the PBC Banquet on the eve of the league tournament in Florence. Head coach Tom Cantrell was named Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons while a conference-high nine Nighthawks landed on the All-Conference team.

Georgia College’s Brandon Benson was named the PBC Player of the Year while USC Aiken’s Joseph Benitez was selected as the Pitcher of the Year and Montevallo’s Sebastian Samuels was named the Freshman of the Year. The league’s head coaches selected all awards.

Landing on the first team All-Conference team for UNG was Michael Bell (second base), Michael Gouge (outfield), Steven Bower (pitcher) and Dylan Peppers (pitcher).

Devin Gearhart (third base), Connor Hoover (shortstop), Bill Leroy (designated hitter), Daniel McCrary (pitcher), Josh Bryan (pitcher) represented North Georgia with second team All-Conference honors.

Bell batted .311 with 11 homeruns while fielding a smooth .981 as second base for the Nighthawks.

Gouge was the team’s second leading hitter at .412, which ranks tenth in the conference.

Bower posted a 7-3 record on the hill before a season-ending injury. He also recorded the program’s first-ever no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Montevallo on Mar. 31.

Peppers was 7-2 with a team-best 82 strikeouts (fifth in PBC) that included a program record 17 in a 3-0 shutout at Columbus State on Apr. 16.

Gearhart batted .323 from the leadoff position for the Nighthawks.

Hoover is UNG’s team leader in runs scored (70), triples (5), homeruns (17) and RBI (70).

Leroy is North Georgia top statistical hitter at .452.

McCrary tallied a team-best nine wins, while Bryan sports an impressive 1.57 ERA and 4-0 record in 13 appearances.

The Coach of the Year honor marks the sixth time that the veteran skipper has earned the league’s top coaching honor. His first came in 1998 when he was named GJCAA Coach of the Year after guiding Georgia Perimeter to the JUCO World Series. He also earned the honor in 2001, 2003, 2007 (PBC) and 2015 (PBC).

UNG has been ranked in the Collegiate Baseball’s top 10 every week of the regular season, highlighted by the program’s first-ever No. 1 ranking on March 20.

Currently ranked second in the nation, North Georgia is the top seed in the PBC Tournament after a 19-5 conference season and 40-8 overall mark.

The top-seeded Nighthawks will begin play in the double-elimination Peach Belt Tournament tomorrow with a quarterfinal game against eight-seeded Georgia Southwestern tomorrow (May 10) at 5:00 p.m. at FMU’s Cornell Field at Sparrow Stadium.
