Dahlonega man faces multiple drug charges

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — Jacob Waltzer,27, of Dahlonega faces multiple drug charges as well as well as theft by taking, fleeing, attempting to elude officers, and escape after he led Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office deputies on a chase through city streets and the University of North Georgia campus on Nov. 23.

According to the incident report, Deputy Corey Bailey spotted a black pickup truck with no license plate on North Grove Street and attempted a traffic stop. The driver refused to stop and eventually turned into the UNG campus at a high rate of speed.

The deputy said he observed pedestrians on both sidewalks running to get out of the way. The chase led back onto Morrison Moore Parkway then onto Auraria Road where the driver struck an embankment and came to a stop.

Waltzer was taken into custody but while deputies were searching the vehicle, he disappeared. A UNG reported seeing him on Morrison Moore and he was taken into custody a second time and transported to the Lumpkin County Detention Center.

Sheriff issues warning to party-goers

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard issued a firm warning Thursday (Aug. 20) via the sheriff’s facebook page that future party-goers could face state charges.

That warning comes in the wake of a party near the University of North Georgia campus last week that went viral on social media and appeared to violate Governor Brian Kemp’s executive order that prohibits gatherings of more than 50 people without proper social distancing amid the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis.

“We have health concerns, Jarrard said. “The University of North Georgia wants to stay open and I want them to be able to stay open.”

Jarrard said there was some initial concern about what local law enforcement could enforce the governor’s order.

“We were trying to go under the public health order, but it doesn’t look like that will work so we will have to go under state laws. We have strategized all week about what we’re going to do if this happens again. I would encourage the students to be mindful of that and just know that they could face some charges if this happens again, which would be on the state level.”

Dahlonega City Marshal Chief Jeff Branyon, who appeared with Jarrard on the facebook video, encouraged party goers to “get on the Internet and look at the CDC guidelines, look at the governor’s order and try to comply with those guidelines…we want to keep everyone safe and healthy til this pandemic is over.”

Dahlonega City Council meeting Monday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Utility billing late fees and disconnection of services will be an important topic for discussion when the Dahlonega City Council meets in and combined work session and called meeting Monday (April 20) at 4 p.m. at City Hall.

Financial Director Melody Marlow reports that calls and emails have increased from customers requesting extension of due dates for paying utility bills because of inability to pay related to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Council will review requirements of the Water and Sewer Rates Ordinance and determine if action is warranted to temporarily suspend late fees and disconnection of service. In the past, a penalty of 10% or a minimum amount of $2 was added each month to any delinquent utility bill that has not been paid by the tenth of each month. Any utility bill delinquent on the 20th of the month has, in the past, resulted in service being discontinued, and a service charge of $75. added to the bill.

Since Council’s adoption of the emergency declaration in March, there have been no service disconnections or penalty charges for non-payment of utility bills.

On average, the city collects $7,800 a month in utility penalties and fees each month. The 10 percent penalty charged on the 10th of the month averages $3,800. The $75 fee charged on the 20th of the month averages $4,000.

Council may temporarily suspend the requirements to charge penalties and disconnect services for non-payment. Any grace period would apply to all residential and commercial customers.

Staff recommends a temporary two-month suspension suspend charging late fees or disconnecting service because of inability to pay utility bills for two months starting in April.

Council also will review a request for approval by the University of North Georgia to install an exterior sign on property owned by the City of Dahlonega at Barlow Road. If approved, UNG will bear all capital and maintenance costs for the new sign and the sign will be up lighted from an external source.

Smith Named NFCA National Pitcher of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — University of North Georgia senior softball player Kylee Smith was named the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week Wednesday afternoon, the association announced.

Smith, who is capturing her fourth NFCA weekly honor, was dominant in No. 9 North Georgia’s trip to Florida. The senior righty posted a 3-0 mark with three one-hit shutouts and 45 strikeouts in 23 innings of work against Sunshine State Conference opponents. Against Nova Southeastern, she fanned a season-high 16 with one walk. Prior to that, Smith sat down 15 Barry Buccaneers without issuing a free pass. Her third shutout came in the trip’s finale at Palm Beach Atlantic in which Smith struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. For the week, the 17-time Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week posted a 0.00 ERA and held her opposition to a .054 batting average.

The Nighthawks will be back in action Saturday against No. 7 Lincoln Memorial at 1 p.m.

Arnold first-inning grand slam ignites UNG offense

FLORENCE, S.C. – Jumping out to a 7-0 lead, the University of North Georgia baseball team hit four long balls, including two by Crews Taylor, to beat Francis Marion, 12-5, Saturday afternoon.

The Nighthawks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with a grand slam from Jake Arnold in the top half of the first. Taylor came around again in the second inning to hit a solo homer on the first pitch he saw to give UNG a 5-0 lead.

Two batters later, it was Bill LeRoy hitting a bomb to left field on a full count pitch, plating Tim Conway in the process to push the lead up to 7-0.

FMU scratched a run across in the fifth, but North Georgia answered with Taylor’s second homer of the day in the eighth inning. After the Patriots found two in the eighth, the Nighthawks book ended the game with another four-run inning, walking in two and using a Jake Howard RBI single to plate the other two.

Francis Marion got two in the final frame of the game to get to the final score.

NOTES

– The 1-5 hitters for UNG went 10-for-20 with 10 runs scored, nine RBI and six walks.

– Steven Bower (3-1) got the win with 7.1 innings of work, fanning eight along the way.

– North Georgia has now won five straight series against FMU.

NEXT UP
The series finale will be Sunday at 1 p.m. as UNG goes for the sweep.

FLORENCE, S.C. – Crews Taylor homered in the sixth, opening up the offense as the University of North Georgia baseball team shut out Francis Marion Friday evening, 6-0, in the Peach Belt Conference series opener.

After Taylor hit his solo shot, UNG was able to double the lead off a Patriot error in the seventh before putting up a four-spot in the ninth.

The Nighthawks loaded up the bases with one out, setting the stage for Jake Arnold to clear the bases on a double to left center, pushing the lead to 5-0. Two batters later, Jake Howard singled through the left side of the Patriot defense to bring the game to its final score.

NOTES

– Cade Heil (3-0) earned the win, giving up just two hits and two walks across 7.2 innings of work. He fanned eight batters along the way.

– Bill LeRoy had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
– Taylor has reached base in 14 straight games, dating back to last season.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Kylee Smith threw another one-hitter, fanning 16 batters along the way, as the No. 12 University of North Georgia softball team split a Friday night doubleheader with Nova Southeastern. Along the way, Smith struck out her 1,000th career batter.

GAME ONE – UNG 2, NSU 0

Smith struck out the first five batters she faced as both pitchers fooled batters through the first three innings. North Georgia finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth, taking advantage of a Shark error to take the 1-0 lead.

UNG doubled its lead in the next inning, using another Nova Southeastern error to push the lead to 2-0. That proved to be enough for the Nighthawks as Smith fanned six of the last nine outs to improve to 7-1.

GAME TWO – NSU 2, UNG 1

North Georgia got on the board early in the nightcap off a Kaylee Womack single that scored Mariah Wicker. The Sharks answered in the third inning, scoring on a squeeze bunt to tie the game up, 1-1.

Nova Southeastern scored the game winner in the sixth inning on an infield single. The Nighthawks were shut down in the batter’s box in the final innings, failing to find a base runner in the final three innings.

NOTES
– Smith gave up just one hit and one walk along the way.
– Womack was 2-for-6 in the twinbill.

Sutton named to Academic All-District team

DAHLONEGA – University of North Georgia women’s basketball player Julianne Sutton was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Team Thursday, as announced by the association.

Sutton becomes the third women’s basketball player all-time to be named to the All-District team, joining Stephanie Huffman and Deana Blankinship. The junior from Flowery Branch, Georgia, currently leads the Peach Belt in scoring at 18.6 points per game and is third in field goal percentage. She sports a 3.38 GPA while majoring in Kinesiology, Health & Fitness.

Sutton is the only Peach Belt member on the All-District team, joining Carson-Newman’s Kayla Marosites, Anderson’s Alexy Mollenhauer and Belmont Abbey’s Allie Downing and Maria Kuhlman on the team.

First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable) Academic All-America honorees will be announced between March 10.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the links above, and are divided into geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

UNG wins Sunday double header in softball classic

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The No. 16 University of North Georgia softball team finished off the Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic with a sweep of Gannon and No. 8 West Chester Sunday afternoon at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Cottrell Park.

GAME ONE – UNG 10, GU 1
The Nighthawks started the scoring in the third inning, using RBI singles from Kaylyn Anthony and Shelby Hammontree to take a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, UNG kept the hot bats going, plating five in the frame. Madison Simmons had a RBI double that scored two before Anthony hit a bomb to push the lead to 8-0.
Gannon was able to scratch a run across in the fifth to avoid the run-rule, but North Georgia scored again in the seventh on a Madison Henry two-run homer that took the game to its final score.
Riley Patton (2-0) got the win, going four innings and striking out six.

GAME TWO – UNG 9, WCU 1 (6 inn.)
North Georgia wasted no time putting the No. 8 team in the nation away, scoring six in the opening inning. Kaylee Womack pushed the first run across on a RBI single. After loading the bases, Olivia Sinquefield drew a walk to double the lead before Cheyanne Mosteller hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead up to 3-0.
The Nighthawks then doubled the lead again on a Simmons single that was coupled with a Golden Ram error, making the score 6-0. UNG scored two more in the second inning on a Jenna Goodrich RBI double. West Chester got on the board in the next frame on a RBI triple to get to a 8-1 scoreline.
North Georgia was able to walk the game off in the sixth due to the run rule on a Sinquefield RBI single that scored Lexi Duncan.
Kylee Smith (4-1) earned the win, tossing four innings and striking out six.

NOTES
– In the first game of the day, No. 21 Southern Indiana beat West Chester, 5-2, in eight innings.
– Simmons went 4-for-6 on the day with four RBI and a run scored.

UNG comeback falls short versus USC Aiken

AIKEN, S.C. – Trailing by three headed into the final frame, the No. 20 University of North Georgia baseball team pushed two runs across in the ninth and had the tying run 90 feet away before USC Aiken escaped with a 7-6 win Sunday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

The Nighthawks struck first in the third, scoring on a Pacer error, but USCA answered immediately with three runs in the bottom of the frame. North Georgia responded in the top of the fourth with RBI singles from Crews Taylor and Tim Conway to tie the game up, 3-3.

The Pacers retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single and doubled their lead by scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth. Jake Arnold cut the lead to 5-4 in the eighth on a RBI double, but USC Aiken hit a RBI double of their own in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to get to a 7-4 lead going into the ninth.

UNG loaded up the bases with one out on three walks that led to a Brady Eeles sacrifice fly, followed by an Arnold RBI single to cut the lead to one. The Pacers got out of the jam, though, to secure the series win.

NOTES
– Arnold went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. He was the only Nighthawk with a multi-hit game.
– North Georgia left 12 runners on base.

UNG will host two midweek games this week, starting with a 2 p.m. first pitch Tuesday against Southern Wesleyan.

NGHS is new healthcare partner for UNG athletics

LUMPKIN COUNTY, Ga. — Two of the largest organizations in the region are now working more closely together as University of North Georgia (UNG) announced today that Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) is the new Official Healthcare Partner of UNG Athletics. The agreement is one of the few in the nation for an NCAA Division II athletics program.

“This partnership reflects the strength of our athletic program and is indicative of our vision to grow the program in the years to come,” said Lindsay Reeves, athletic director at UNG. “We are excited to have the opportunity to work alongside NGHS whose commitment to community mirrors our own.”

In addition to the athletic partnership agreement, NGHS and UNG will collaborate on UNG health initiatives and Wellness Expos, as well as with Student Counseling and Health Services in Gainesville. Both organizations are also exploring ways that NGHS can support programs within UNG’s College of Health Sciences and Professions.

“We are honored to support UNG,” said Carol Burrell, president and CEO of NGHS. “Both of our organizations have deep roots in North Georgia and have grown tremendously over the past few years. Our shared commitment to the community makes this partnership a natural fit.”

UNG sweeps twinbill, Kylee Smith tosses no-hitter

DAHLONEGA – With an 8-0 win in the opener, the University of North Georgia softball team claimed the 1000th program win and followed it up with No. 1001 in a 4-0 win over Southern Wesleyan to complete the doubleheader sweep Thursday at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Cottrell Park.
GAME ONE
Kylee Smith tossed a no-hitter, striking out 12 along the way as North Georgia cruised to the five-inning win. Margaret Simmons got things started with a double down the line in left in the second to plate the go-ahead run. Simmons then scored from second on a Cheyanne Mosteller sacrifice bunt to put UNG up, 2-0.
The Nighthawks scored four more in the third, starting by walking in a run and scoring on a fielder’s choice. After adding a run on a passed ball, Mosteller doubled to score the fourth run of the frame. The top of the lineup got into the scoring column in the fourth on a Kaylyn Anthony RBI double and a Jenna Goodrich RBI single to push the game to the eight-run margin.
Smith won her 100th game of her career, improving to 3-1 on the year. She only threw 65 pitches in the contest.
GAME TWO
The Nighthawks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, pushing across a run in each of the first three innings. In the first, Shelby Hammontree doubled down the left field line to plate Mariah Wicker. In the second, Kaylee Womack earned a RBI single before Wicker homered to left center in the third.
North Georgia scored the final run of the game in the sixth inning on a passed ball. Southern Wesleyan got their first hit of the twinbill in the fifth inning and got two runners on before Laken Chambers got out of the jam.
Chambers earned her first win of the season, giving up just two hits while striking out two.

NOTES
– North Georgia started play in softball in 1997. The Nighthawks claimed 1000 wins in just over 23 seasons.

– Wicker and Simmons both went 2-for-4 with three runs scored on the day.

North Georgia hosts the Cottrell Foundation Loyal Blue Classic this weekend with play starting tomorrow at noon. UNG plays for the first time in the tournament Saturday at noon against Gannon.

UNG rolls past Columbus State, 72-54

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The No. 15 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team jumped out to a quick 16-point lead on their way to a 72-54 win over Columbus State Wednesday evening.

After the Cougars scored the first basket of the game, UNG answered with an 18-0 run. CSU cut the lead down to as few as six in the latter stages of the first half, but North Georgia answered each time to keep the game at a three-possession game going to halftime.

The Nighthawks quickly stretched the lead back to double figures in the second half, pulling away to as many as 20 down the stretch.

NOTES

– Kara Groover notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards, while Julianne Sutton led the way with 19 points. Abbie Franklin contributed 13 points.

– The Nighthawks hit seven three-pointers, while Columbus State did not hit a shot outside of the arc.

– UNG had 22 points off 19 Cougar turnovers.

The Nighthawks will battle Lander in a matchup of the league’s best two teams Saturday inside the Convocation Center. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.

UNG women spoil UNC Pembroke upset bid, 66-62

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — Down 16 points with 7:33 to play, the No. 17 University of North Georgia women’s basketball team finished the game on a 28-8 run to defeat UNC Pembroke, 66-62, Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.

The Braves took advantage of a 25-10 second quarter where the Nighthawks went 1-for-9 from the floor and 0-for-4 from distance. UNCP was able to keep their lead in the third quarter and extended a 10-point lead after the third quarter to 16 with three straight buckets to start the final period.

The Nighthawks stormed back, using full court pressure to force multiple UNCP turnovers as UNG took its first lead of the second half with 59 seconds to play. North Georgia held on to the lead the rest of the way to clinch its 24th straight win inside the friendly confines of the Convocation Center.

NOTES

– Julianne Sutton notched a career-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the floor. She was the only Nighthawk to score in double figures.

– North Georgia had 21 offensive rebounds, turning them into 19 second chance points.

UNC Pembroke races past Nighthawks, 81-65

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — No. 23 UNC Pembroke shot over 60 percent from the floor in the first half as they were able to fend off the University of North Georgia men’s basketball team with an 81-65 win Saturday afternoon.

The Braves jumped out to a 24-10 lead early in the opening half, but the game never got too far away as the Nighthawks hung around the entirety of the 40 minutes, cutting the lead to as few as 11 multiple times in the middle of the second half. The Braves answered each time to keep UNG at bay and clinch the win.

NOTES

– Bailey Minor led North Georgia in the scoring column with 12 points, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc. KJ Jenkins added 10.

– The Nighthawks were 22-for-30 from the free throw line in the game.

– UNG forced 15 turnovers while only having 11 of their own.
